MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – A full team effort that meant a lot.
The Central Michigan softball team grabbed a 5-3 win over Minnesota on Sunday afternoon to close the Gopher Indoor Classic with a sweet victory. The Chippewas have defeated three Big Ten teams in the last two seasons, Northwestern, Michigan State and now Minnesota.
Brooklyn Compau has taken the victory in all three games.
Next on the docket for Central Michigan is a trip to Tennessee to take on Belmont and participate in the Austin Peay tournament.
Minnesota struck first in the second inning. The Gophers scored after a baserunner reached via double, and crossed home plate on an error by the Chippewa outfield.
The Chippewas took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning when
Rachel Cairo doubled to right center and
Grace Koenig and
London Williams both touched the dish. The run from Williams was her first 1
st to 3
rd run scored of the game.
Central Michigan added another run on an RBI single from Koenig, which scored
Ashley Bila. Bila served as the DP for CMU against the Gophers and drew two walks in the outing. Two more runs scored for Central Michigan on a two-out RBI double from Kuzara to right center, that scored both Koenig and Williams again, from second and first respectively.
Minnesota cut the Chippewa lead to two in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run home run.
Cierra Laska entered the circle to relive
Brooklyn Compau in the bottom of the fifth inning. Laska took over with runners on first and second and a 2-0 count. Laska would walk the first batter she faced to load the bases but got herself out of the jam with a ground ball back to herself.
A glove flip to
Alexa Carter standing on home plate ended the inning and the big threat from the Gophers.
Laska threw the rest of the game, the final two innings and issued just one hit, gave up no runs and struck out two. The save for Laska is the second of the season for her in the circle.
Compau, who took the victory threw 4.2 innings with three hits, two earned runs and four strikeouts.
Central Michigan advances to 5-5 on the season while Minnesota falls to 6-9.
The Chippewas will next be in Tennessee to take on Belmont for a double header on Friday, February 27
th. The first game is slated to start at 2:00 pm (CT)/3:00 PM (ET).

BUIES CREEK, NC. – The Miami RedHawks softball team secured a 4-1 victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes softball on Sunday afternoon, wrapping up a perfect 5-0 weekend.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The RedHawks kicked off scoring in the bottom of the second as Danitza Hernandez hit a double, allowing Evey Dieudonne to run in to score, 1-0.
- Iowa tied it up in the top of the sixth, scoring an unearned run off a single.
- The Red and White took the lead in the bottom of the sixth after Leila Mathis hit a single, allowing Dieudonne to score. Hernandez and Mathis would also score on the play after a pair of throwing errors.

UP NEXT: The RedHawks play again Friday, Feb. 27, in Columbia, Mo., against Drake University at 1:30 p.m. and the University of Missouri at 6:30 p.m.

MEMPHIS, Tenn.—Mia Morera (Simi Valley, Calif./Westlake) launched the first and third home runs of the day as the Northern Illinois University softball team (4–4) powered past Bradley University (4–9), 10–5, in the final game of the Blues City Invitational for NIU.
Katy Ramage (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora Township) added the second NIU homer, with Ramage and Morera combining to drive in seven of the Huskies' 10 runs.
Danielle Stewart (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East), Ramage, Morera, and
Izzi Hanna (Granger, Ind./Penn) all recorded multi-hit games for the Huskie offense.
Stewart hit a double to right-center field for the first hit of the game for NIU before being brought home on a
Kayla Estrada (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) RBI single. After Ramage reached base on a defensive error, Morera hit a 3-run shot to deep left field as NIU took an early 4-0 lead.
Stewart stepped into the circle for the Huskies recording a pair of strikeouts to end the first inning. Stewart added her third strikeout of the game in the second inning after Bradley pushed one run across.
Stewart singled to lead off the third inning before being called out in the next play as Estrada reached via fielder's choice. Ramage marked her first home run of the season, a 2-run shot to deep center field to bring home
Mallory Wollenmann (Evansville, Ind./Reitz Memorial) and give the Huskies a 6-1 lead.
With two outs on the board, Bradley's Ashley Breeding hit a 2-run home run to deep center field, trimming NIU's lead to just three in the third.
The Braves defense got a pair of quick outs to start the fourth inning before
Jenna Turner (Marengo, Ill./Marengo) doubled to left center field.
Rylie Hartman (Kankakee, Ill./Herscher) hit an RBI double down the left field line to send Turner across home plate for the seventh run of the game.
Breeding hit her second 2-run homer of the afternoon in the fifth inning as NIU's lead dropped to just two at 7-5.
Ramage had the first hit of the seventh inning, a single through the right side of the infield before Morera stepped up to the plate. Morera sent the ball deep to left field for her second home run of the game, scoring Ramage on the play.
Ava Falcone (Elk Grove Village, Ill./James B. Contant) hit an RBI single through the left side of the infield as
Natalie Miller (Fredonia, Wis./Ozaukee) scored the tenth run of the game for the Huskies.
Madison Carlson (South Beloit, Ill./South Beloit) recorded two strikeouts in the final inning as the Huskies won their third straight game. Carlson, Stewart, and
Lily Cassell (LaGrange, Ohio/Keystone) accounted for six strikeouts in the victory.
The Huskies return to the field on March 6-8 as they compete at the Boilermaker Spring Classic, hosted by Purdue. NIU will take on the hosts at 4 p.m. on March 6 in West Lafayette, Indiana.
