FORT MYERS, Fla. - - Led by a solid pitching performance by Grace Gray, the Ball State softball team opened the second day of the FGCU Kickoff Classic with a 10-0 (5) victory over Long Island Saturday afternoon at the FGCU Softball Complex.
In her first collegiate start, Gray scattered two hits and two walks over her 5.0 innings of work to give the Cardinals (1-2) their first victory of the season. She also struck out a season-high four Sharks (0-3), raising her season total to seven after she fanned three in 1.2 innings of relief in Friday's season opener versus Charlotte.
On the offensive front, senior first baseman Ella Whitney provided the biggest blast in the win by smashing the team's first home run of the season; a two-run shot to left field making the score 4-0.
The eventual game-winning run crossed early, as senior second baseman Mandy Lauth was hit by a pitch with bases loaded in the top of the first to bring home redshirt junior third baseman Skylinn Pogue. Lauth also drew two walks to reach base in three of her four at bats.
Overall, Ball State tallied nine hits versus LIU with two each from Pogue, senior right fielder Ashlee Lovett and senior designated player Lindsey DeRoeck. DeRoeck would also collect Ball State's first triple of the season in the second inning.
The Ball State softball team closes play in the FGCU Kickoff Classic Sunday with games versus Southern Illinois (9 a.m.) and Long Island (11:30 a.m.).
Buffalo 20, Boston 16

ORLANDO, Fla. – The University at Buffalo softball team (2-2, 0-0 MAC) split their Saturday doubleheader at the Black & Gold Classic hosted by UCF. To open the day, they had a slugfest against the Boston U Terriers. The Bulls took home the 20-16 win. Afterwards, they fell to #19 Duke, 3-1.
Both teams combined for 41 hits, 23 of which went to the Bulls as they set a new program record for hits in a single game. Buffalo's 20 runs scored were the most allowed by Boston U in their program's history. Reagan Terwilliger went 4-for-4 in the contest, with Abbey Nagel going 4-for-6. They tied the program record for most hits in a game.
The Terriers entered the game as the Patriot League preseason favorite as they had won the last three Patriot League Tournament titles. Buffalo got on top early courtesy of a sac fly from Bri Delaney to score Emily Gorman. Nagel added to the lead with an RBI single that scored Terwilliger.
The Terriers responded in the bottom of the first with an RBI double and a 2-RBI single to put them in front, 3-2.
In the second, a bases loaded walk by Delaney tied the game at 3. Nagel bat stayed hot as she ripped in Nicole Allen and Miranda Zipp to take a 5-3 lead. In the bottom of the second, the Terriers threatened with runners on first and second and no outs, but three straight fly outs by Olivia Russ quieted the Terriers.
After the Bulls went down in order, Boston U took the lead with a 4-run third inning. Their lead didn't last as Buffalo punched back. Following a pair of singles, Lily Lauck drove in Terwilliger to cut Boston U's lead down to 7-6. Nagel delivered yet again with an RBI single through the right side to score Allen and tie the game at 7. After forcing a pitching change, Bella Smithson nearly hit a three-run home run to center field. Her RBI double off the wall gave the Bulls an 8-7 lead. Tabitha von Kolen singled to right field to score Nagel and extend the lead. von Kolen and Sophia Avin padded Buffalo's lead to 11-7.
An RBI single in the bottom of the fourth by the Terriers made it an 11-8 Buffalo lead after four innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Boston U tied the game at 11 as they scored three runs on four hits and a pair of errors.
Buffalo bounced right back in the sixth. Gorman's 2-RBI double to left field gave the Bulls the lead back at 13-11. A Terwilliger single scored Gorman to push the lead to 14-11. Lauck recorded her second hit of the day which resulted in Terwilliger to score. Delaney hit an RBI single that scored Lauck from first base. The Bulls led 16-11 headed to the bottom half of the inning. A sac fly by the Terriers cut Buffalo's lead to 16-12.
The fireworks carried over into the seventh inning. The Bulls scored four runs on four hits and a couple of errors to take a 20-12 lead. In the inning, Ardyn Hopf, Terwilliger, Gorman and Thelen came around to score for the Bulls. Boston U made it interesting as they did not back down. With two outs, the Terriers rallied to score four runs, to make it 20-16. The Bulls shut down the Terriers' hops of a rally to escape with the win.
Buffalo's offense did a number on reigning Patriot League Pitcher of the Year Kasey Ricard as they scored 9 runs on 12 hits and two walks in her 3.0 innings of work.
Nagel finished with a team-high 5 RBIs as Gorman (3), Lauck (2) and Delaney (4) had multiple RBIs on the day.
Central Michigan 7, Siena 2

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The bats continued to be hot for Team 48 on the second day of the 2026 season. Central Michigan defeated Siena 7-3 in the first game, and then fell to St. John's 6-7 in a 10-inning outing.
The Chippewas have tallied 10+ hits in three of the first four games of the season, with the game against George Mason being the outlier, with nine hits as a team.
Central Michigan will close out the tournament against the College of Charleston at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Game 1
The game with the Saints was scoreless until the fourth inning when a Saint hit a home run in the fourth inning to take the 1-0 lead.
Central Michigan responded in the sixth inning when the Chippewas scored five runs, taking a 5-1 lead. The Chippewas added their final run in the top of the seventh, and Siena scored one more in the bottom of the final inning.
London Williams was responsible for the first two runs on the board when she hit the first home run of the 2026 season. Grace Koenig scored on the four bagger, giving CMU the 2-1 tilt.
Rachel Cairo also doubled in the sixth inning that scored Jenna Kuzara, 3-1 Chippewas. A sacrifice fly from Cierra Laska in the same inning scored Cairo and the Chippewas were up 4-1.
The fifth run came when Emma Lotus reached on a fielder's choice to score Ashley Bila who entered as a pinch runner. Cairo was responsible for the final Chippewa run of the game with another double to score Kuzara once again.
Siena's final run was scored came on behalf of a fielding error by Cairo at shortstop.
Mackenzie Langan collected her second win in as many appearances in the game with the Saints, and Laska charted the first save of the season in the outing.
Kent State 9, Monmouth 0

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Kent State (2-2) split a pair of games on the second day of the Terrier Invite on Saturday, falling to IU Indy in a high-scoring affair before bouncing back with a dominant victory over Monmouth. The Golden Flashes dropped an 9-8 decision to the Jaguars in game one before rolling to a 9-0 win over the Hawks in five innings.
Brynn Libler led the offensive charge with six hits and five runs scored across both games. Aaralyn Nogay had four hits and three runs scored, while Ashlyn Porter added five hits and two runs scored. Megan Claerhout drove in five runs on the day.
Kent State wasted no time getting on the board in the bottom of the first. Aaralyn Nogay tripled to left field and scored on a Brynn Libler single up the middle. Porter doubled to left field and scored on an error at second base to give the Golden Flashes a 2-0 lead.
The Golden Flashes extended their lead to 6-0 in the second inning with four runs. Alex Trevena led off with a single through the left side and scored on a Nogay triple to right center. Libler drove in Nogay with an RBI single to center field. After Porter singled to left field, Shaulis reached on an error that allowed Porter and Shaulis to score.
The Blue and Gold then put the game away with three runs in the fourth frame. Porter reached on a fielder's choice and scored when Quinn doubled to right field. Claerhout followed with a two-RBI double to center field to invoke the run rule after five innings.
Riley Miller earned the win in the circle, pitching all five innings and allowing just four hits while striking out two. The Golden Flashes defense played error-free softball behind her. Kent State finished with 11 hits in the victory. Libler went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, Nogay was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two triples, and Claerhout drove in four runs.
Kent State will wrap up play against Wofford College on Sunday, Feb. 8. First pitch has been updated to 1:00 p.m. between the Flashes and Terriers.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Miami University softball team completed a Saturday afternoon doubleheader sweep, defeating the University of Minnesota and San Diego State to close out a perfect day in San Diego. Miami downed Minnesota to begin the day, 6-1 and followed that up with a 7-1 victory over SDSU.
GAME 1 vs. Minnesota
The RedHawks kicked off the game in the bottom of the first with Mia Fleming scoring off of a fielding error made by the Gophers.
The Gophers responded in the top of the fourth, scoring off of a wild pitch, to tie up the game 1-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, off of a sacrifice fly from Evey Dieudonne, Katy Olive scored. Bailey Manos scored right after, off of a sacrifice bunt from Fleming, making the score 3-1 at the end of the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, Olive tripled, allowing Ella Carter and Erin Pinter to score. Manos singled and brought Olive home, ending the sixth with a 6-1 lead.
The RedHawks ultimately pulled out a 6-1 win against the Gophers.
Katy Olive went 2-for-2 at the plate, had two of the six runs, had the only triple of the game and was credited with two RBI for the RedHawks. Bailey Manos went 2-for-3 at the plate, had one run, and was credited with one RBI.
Presley Hosick pitched the complete game for the RedHawks, only allowing four hits. Five RedHawks were credited with RBI.
GAME 2 vs. SDSU
The RedHawks started the game off strong at the top of the first with Fleming scoring from second base off a throwing error.
The Aztecs responded in the bottom of the first, making the score 1-1.
In the top of the second, Danitza Hernandez scored off of a fielder's choice hit by Manos. The RedHawks took a 2-1 lead at the end of the second inning.
The Red and White extended their advantage at the top of the third with Olive and Carter scoring off two throwing errors made by the Aztecs. Pinter then took advantage of a single hit by Hernandez to score, pushing Miami's lead to 5-1.
Miami added two more runs in the seventh inning. Fleming drove in Mia Estrello with a sacrifice fly, and Olive followed with a single to bring Manos home.
The RedHawks closed out the game with a 7–1 win to complete the 2-0 day.
Danitza Hernandez went one-for-one at the plate, brought in one run, and was credited with one RBI. Seven RedHawks scored runs. The RedHawks reached on three errors and once on a fielder's choice.
Ohio 12, Towson 4 (6 inn.)

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Ohio softball team (3-1) returned to action on Saturday (Feb. 7) for the second day of the Founders Classic in Spartanburg, S.C. Ohio took the first game of the day against Towson (2-2), 12-4 in six innings, before falling to host USC Upstate (2-1), 10-9, in eight innings in the second game of the day.
GAME ONE: Ohio 12, Towson 4 (6 Innings)
Overall, Ohio scored 12 run s on seven hits and committed two errors, while Towson scored four runs on three hits and committed five errors.
Senior Colleen Bare (Pickerington, Ohio) went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored, while junior Kylie Gorsuch (North Canton, Ohio) had a home run, RBI and one run scored. Senior Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) added one hit and scored two runs, while junior Mikie Lieving (New Haven, W.V.) and sophomore Sydney Young (Charleston, W. Va.) both recorded two RBI. Freshman Allie Cervola (Hunker, Pa.) registered a double and an RBI, while junior Izzie Wilson (Delaware, Ohio) registered two RBI and scored two runs.
In the circle, senior Keegan Moore (South Point, Ohio) got the start, throwing four innings, allowing four runs, two earned, while walking four and striking out two. Sophomore Ally Meyers (Waterville, Ohio) entered the game in the fifth inning, pitching two innings, allowing no runs on no hits, walked one and struck out four for the first save of her career.
Towson struck first in the top of the second inning, scoring two runs on a fielding error, taking a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the frame. The Bobcats responded in the bottom of the frame, taking the lead on an RBI single from Lieving, sending the game to the second inning with Ohio leading, 3-2.
After a scoreless top of the second, the Bobcats added on in the bottom of the inning, with Hummel scoring on a wild pitch and Bare scoring on the throw when junior Brenna Farmer (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio) was thrown out at second, giving Ohio a 5-2 lead entering the third inning.
After a scoreless third inning from both teams, the Ohio defense sent the Tigers down in order in the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the inning, Ohio added on to their lead after an RBI double from Cervola, putting Ohio up, 6-2 headed into the top of the fifth.
Towson cut into the Bobcats lead in the top of the fifth. After a two-run home run, Meyers entered the circle. With no outs and runners on first and second, Meyers was able to get two batters to strikeout, with the final batter to ground out to end the threat and send the game to the bottom of the fifth with Ohio leading, 6-4.
The Bobcats got the runs back in the bottom of the fifth, capitalizing on Towson fielding errors, scoring three runs on no hits and two errors to take a 9-4 lead into the top of the sixth inning.
After the Bobcats held Towson off the board in the top of the sixth, the Bobcats offense took control in the bottom of the sixth inning. After Gorsuch led the inning off with a home run, Farmer drew a walk and Westler singled to put runners on second and third with no outs. Moments later, Young hit a two-run single to right center, ending the game and securing the Bobcats' 12-4 win.
Western Michigan 16, Morehead State 3 | Box Score

CLINTON, S.C. – The Broncos had their first of two run rule games to begin the second day of the Blue Hose Invitational. WMU had an offensive explosion against the Morehead State Eagles, scoring 16 runs on 11 hits in a five-inning 16-3 victory. Junior outfielder Emily Lampela tied a program record in the big win, bringing in eight runs on two home runs, including the Brown and Gold's first grand slam of the season. Also earning multiple hits in the victory was shortstop Caitlin Tighe, and second baseman Duncan. In the circle, freshman Hannah Potts picked up her first win for Western Michigan, pitching 3.2 innings with six strikeouts while allowing four hits and no earned runs.
The Broncos second game on Saturday was a more back and forth affair with the hosts, Presbyterian. WMU got on the board first in the top of the third as Duncan doubled to left field with the bases loaded, scoring everyone but herself. The Blue Hose had their first runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth, cutting the Brown and Gold lead to only a run with a two-run double.
Presbyterian took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs on five hits. Down by three runs with only an inning left, Western Michigan's offense wasn't deterred with a lead-off walk for junior Analeez Niles. A strikeout followed by another walk set up the Broncos first scoring play of the seventh. Malartsik put a single in right field to score pinch runner Haleigh Smith. WMU tied the game up on the next play as a fielding error on Lampela's at-bat scored two more runs. The Brown and Gold retook the lead two at-bats later as Duncan hit her first collegiate home run, bringing herself and Herman home for an 8-6 lead. Western Michigan's defense had a big final half inning on Saturday, taking down the Blue Hose to earn its third win of the weekend. Junior Casey Fazzini picked up the win in the circle, pitching the final 1.1 innings with a strikeout and allowing no hits.
