ATHENS, Ohio – It was a gritty, grind-it-out kind of game Friday afternoon at Pruitt Field, but the Bellarmine field hockey team walked out the victors after a shootout with host Ohio.
Knights senior keeper Kailey Workman, after claiming seven saves in a scoreless regulation and two overtimes, stopped the Bobcats' Tiana Nhamoinesu in the ninth round of shots to earn Bellarmine (2-8, 2-2 MAC) their second road conference win in as many games.
The effort gave Workman her second career shutout, matching her performance against Lindenwood on October 15, 2023. Still, Friday's game likely marked Workman's best work, as she faced an onslaught of shots by Ohio and faced only one shot on goal in that contest against the Lancers.
Ohio (2-9, 2-2 MAC), in fact, outshot the Knights 21-1, 7-1 on goal, and held a 10-2 advantage in penalty corners. Still, Workman and Bellarmine gave the Bobcats' defense fits all day long to force a shootout before claiming a win that, when looking at the box score, looks like they had no business claiming.
In the first round of shootouts, Bellarmine and Ohio knotted at two scores apiece. The visitors got conversions from freshmen Cami Paris and Madison Patton, while the hosts received the same from Ava Hershberger and Adi Geer.
In the second round of shootouts, Alicia Hudson, Luna Tuncay and Paris converted their first three chances while Geer converted one for Ohio. That set the stage for Workman to put an end to the Bobcats' day by kicking away Nhamoinesu's shot to seal the win before she was swarmed by her teammates in front of the cage.
It will be a quick turnaround for Bellarmine as they match up tomorrow afternoon, again at 1 p.m. ET at Pruitt Field in Athens, against Queens (1-7) in a neutral site match.
