BOONE, N.C. — The App State field hockey team took down the Bellarmine Knights 2-0 on Friday in the second shutout of the season.
The Mountaineers (7-1, 2-0 MAC) held a majority of ball possession in the game, finding the back of the cage in the second half of the contest. App State did not allow a single shot in the game, with the Mountaineers outshooting the Knights (0-8, 0-2 MAC) 16-0.
Sophia Baxter and Lise Boekaar both scored against Bellarmine, keeping the Mountaineers undefeated in conference play.
It was scoreless in the first period, with the Mountaineers dominating much of the ball. Although generating two corners and getting four shots up, the Mountaineers failed to convert to begin the game.
It was more of the same for the Mountaineers in the second, dominating the ball with five shots on goal and two corners. Despite multiple times in front of the cage, the Mountaineers remained scoreless heading into the break.
The Mountaineers ended the scoreless draw in the third, with Boekaar scoring her ninth goal of the season off a penalty corner. The Mountaineers also tallied two shots on goal and two corners.
To close out the game, Baxter found the back of the cage for her seventh goal of the season, doubling the Mountaineer lead to two. The Mountaineers closed out the game earning two more corners in the 2-0 win over Bellarmine.
The Mountaineers will return to the High Country to take on No. 18 James Madison on Sunday. First touch at the Dr. Jan C. Watson Field at the Brandon & Erica M. Adcock Field Hockey Complex is scheduled for 1 p.m.

MUNCIE, Ind. – Central Michigan Field Hockey earned their first Mid-American Conference win of the season at Ball State, Friday.
Ball State struck first, squeezing a shot past Jenna Billig quickly in the second quarter.
Ashley Cogger replaced Billig in the third quarter and kept the Cardinals off the board in the second half. Billig logged three saves on the outing, Cogger with five.
The Chippewas offense got rolling with Mallory Camryn logging her 10th goal of the season by deflecting a shot by Mora Rulli over the Cardinals keeper, tying the game. The assist came as Rulli's seventh of the season.
Ball State nearly took the lead just a minute after the Chippewas first goal. After review, the call on the field was overturned due to obstruction, maintaining the 1-1 tie.
Carolena Ryon delivered with just under five minutes remaining, her MAC-leading third game winner, squeezing a shot past the Cardinals keeper after being fed down low by Cameron Pluciennik. The goal was Ryon's seventh of the 2025 campaign, good for second on the team behind Camryn; Pluciennik's assist came as her second of the season.
The Chippewas tied the Cardinals in shots on goal with nine a piece, while the Cardinals held the advantage in corners 8-5.
The victory marks CMU's first conference win since a 1-0 showing over Kent State, Sept. 24, 2021.
Central Michigan returns home, taking on MAC foe Ohio Sunday, where the team will celebrate Senior Day.

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Five Dukes scored as No. 18 James Madison posted a 5-0 shutout against Longwood in Mid-American Conference field hockey action on Friday evening at the JMU Field Hockey Complex.
The Dukes (7-3, 2-0 MAC) held a lopsided advantage in shots (23-2) and scored four of their five goals in the opening 16 minutes to down the Lancers (2-7, 0-2 MAC).
Skyler Brown paced the JMU offense with a goal and a career-high two assists, while Alice Roeper scored on a penalty stroke and added a helper. Julie Narleski, Madelief Molier and Maddie Tierney also found the back of the net – with Tierney's goal being the first of her career.
The Dukes played all three goalkeepers, with Molly Schreiner earning the win and making one save in 30:00. Hannah Popolis came in to start the second half, and Lilly Sweeney finished in cage for the fourth quarter.
Longwood netminder Sophie Mooldijk recorded nine saves in the loss. The Lancers held firm in the second half, allowing no goals after the 32nd minute.
Brown collected a rebound off a shot from Roeper and sent in a pass from the right side to Narleski for the tap-in to open the scoring just under two minutes into the contest.
Roeper converted on a penalty stroke at the 9:24 mark of the first – the first of the season for the Dukes – to put JMU ahead 2-0.
On a reset, Jola Ollrogge connected with Brown, who weaved through Longwood's defense and sent a shot to the bottom right corner to make it 3-0 with 13 seconds remaining in the first period.
Fading away from the goal, Roeper took a shot that was deflected in front by Molier under a minute into the second frame to build JMU's lead to 4-0.
On a penalty corner situation, Brown drifted to the right, sending a shot left to the stick of Tierney for the tip-in goal, just 1:46 into the third.
The Dukes will continue Mid-American Conference play as they head south to take on App State this Friday. Action in Boone, N.C. is set for 1 p.m. and will stream on YouTube.

KENT, Ohio – The RedHawks shut out Kent State Friday, prevailing by a score of 7-0. Freshman midfielder Malena Sabez score three goals during the contest, improving to ten on the season. Miami improves to 6-2 with the win while Kent State falls to 1-7 with the loss.
Miami's first shot and first goal of the game came with 30 seconds left in the first period as Bet Gifra scored off an assist by Paula Navarro.
After two unsuccessful penalty corners early in the second, Gifra set up Sabez for her eighth goal of the season to make it a 2-0 game.
Justina Intzes scored her first goal of the game with 35 seconds remaining in the half to make it 3-0. Judit Garcia Gregori assisted.
The lone score of the third period came from Intzes off an assist from Berta Mata with less than 20 seconds left.
Virginia Olin notched her first goal of the season in the fourth period on an assist by Meg Canfield to make it 5-0.
Miami's sixth goal was scored by Sabez on a penalty corner with three minutes left to play. Kylie Coughlin inserted the ball and Mata set up Sabez for the score.
Sabez completed her hat trick with 10 seconds left in the match, scoring on another penalty corner. Once again, Coughlin and Mata both assisted on the goal.
The RedHawks return home Sunday for a home match against UMass. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m.

Athens, Ohio – The Ohio field hockey team returned to action for their home opener at Pruitt Field Friday afternoon, defeating #11 UMass in dramatic fashion by a score of 1-0.
The defensive battle featured five shots from the Bobcats with two on net, while the Minutewomen recorded 12 shots with three on net.
Individually, senior Anouk Plaehn (Hanover, Germany) scored the game-winning goal for the Bobcats, her second of the season. The game featured a strong defensive effort to keep the Minutewomen off the board for 60 minutes, highlighted by sophomore goalkeeper Ash Stephenson (Kingston Upon Hull, England) stopping all three shots faced for her first clean sheet as a Bobcat.
Both teams traded chances in an action packed first quarter, with the Bobcats and Minutewomen notching two shots and one penalty corner each. Stephenson made the first of her three saves at the 14:34 mark to keep the game tied at 0-0 after 15 minutes of play.
Ohio opened the second quarter with sustained offensive pressure, as Juniors Emily Beitzel (Hershey, Pa.) and Natalie LaFleur (Fredericksburg, Va.) both forced saves from the UMass netminder in the opening minutes of the quarter. The Bobcats quickly shifted focus to the defensive end, stopping three consecutive UMass penalty corners and five total in a tense two minute period, keeping the score at 0-0 headed into the half.
The third quarter again featured back and forth play from both teams, and the Bobcats once again were forced to buckle down on defense. Stevenson made her second save of the game at the 39:15 mark, keeping zeroes on the scoreboard heading into the fourth quarter.
The Bobcats capitalized on an early fourth quarter chance, when Senior Plaehn scored the first goal of the game for either team off a penalty corner at the 48:31 mark. The tense final minutes of the game again featured strong play from the Bobcat defense, highlighted by a diving save from Stevenson at the 52:07 mark. Ohio went on to secure the win and a 1-0 record at Pruitt Field this season.
The Bobcats will return to action on Sunday, September 28th, when they travel to Central Michigan to face the Chippewas. First touch is set for 12 p.m., and streaming information can be found on ohiobobcats.com.
