BOONE, N.C. — The App State Field Hockey team closed out an undefeated weekend by defeating the Vermont Catamounts 7-1.

The Mountaineers (6-1, 1-0 MAC) never trailed in the contest, scoring in less than two minutes in the first period.

Sophia Baxter, Lise Boekaar, Frederique Grimbergen, Hadley Kuzmicky and Kate Richardson all scored against the Catamounts (5-3), with Grimbergen netting a hat trick.

Both teams scored in the opening period, with Grimbergen putting the Mountaineers on the board with 13:31 remaining. Vermont answered with its only goal of the game late in the period, tying it 1-1.

The Mountaineers' offense exploded in the second, scoring three times. Baxter put App State back in the lead after a penalty stroke, followed by goals from Grimbergen and Boekaar to give the Mountaineers a 4-1 lead at the break.

It was more of the same in the third, with Grimbergen scoring her third goal of the game from a Bridget Donovan assist. Richardson later followed, scoring her third goal of the season, giving the Mountaineers a 6-1 lead heading into the final period.

The Mountaineers added one more goal in the fourth, with Kuzmicky getting her fifth goal of the season from a Richardson pass. Claire Grenis made three saves in the period, bringing her total to five in the 7-1 win.

James Madison 3, No. 8 Michigan 1

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – James Madison field hockey notched its first top-10 victory since 2008 with a hard-fought 3-1 win over No. 8 Michigan behind a hat trick from Madelief Molier and a career-high 12 saves from goalkeeper Molly Schreiner on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Phyllis Ocker Field.

JMU (6-3, 1-0 MAC) captured the win despite trailing in shots (10-29), shots on goal (6-13) and penalty corners (15-3), handing the eighth-ranked Wolverines their first home loss of the 2025 campaign.

Roeper and freshman Sydney Raguini added assists in today's win – the first point of Raguini's career. The Dukes' defense was stout, posting a first-half shutout for the seventh time this season.

Eva Bernardy was the Wolverines' lone scorer, cashing in on a penalty corner with assists from Juliette Manzur and Abby Burnett. Hala Silverstein started in goal for Michigan and registered one save before being replaced by Caylie McMahon in the second half. After making a pair of stops, McMahon was pulled with 3:01 remaining to put an extra attacker on.

Michigan held an advantage in shots in the first period, 6-1, but the Dukes turned away three Wolverine penalty corners to keep it a 0-0 game after one.

Less than five minutes into the second, Brown threaded a pass to Molier, who drove into the circle and hit a shot off the post, collected her rebound, then spun around and pushed through to give JMU a 1-0 lead.

At the half, Michigan led in shots (12-5) and penalty corners (6-1).

Halfway through the third, Michigan's Abby Tamer found herself alone on a breakaway, however, her strike was rejected by Schreiner.

Later in the frame, Covarrubias sent a long ball from the defense end to Roeper, who tracked down the pass and found Molier in front for the score to make it 2-0 in the 40th minute.

The Wolverines responded early in the fourth on a penalty corner off a direct shot from Bernardy with the insertion from Manzur and a stop by Burnett to cut the Dukes' lead in half, 2-1, with 10:24 to play.

Maddie Tierney sent a pass down the line that was collected by Raguini. On the rush, a Michigan defender fell down, leaving Molier open in the circle for a pass from the freshman. Molier dribbled to the near side and sent a reverse shot in for the final goal of the contest.

The win was JMU's first over a ranked opponent since taking down No. 18 Liberty last season at home, 3-2, on Oct. 29.

Additionally, it was the program's first road win against a ranked team since 2022 when it topped No. 20 Duke, 4-2, on Sept. 25.

Molier extended her scoring streak to three consecutive games, tied for the longest stretch in her career. Moreover, her three-goal outing was the first multi-goal game of her career and marked the first hat trick by a Duke since Roeper did so at Queens (N.C.) last season on Sept. 29.

Schreiner's 12-save performance marked her third career game with double-digit saves, and second this season. Previously, the State College, Pa. native recorded 11 stops in a 1-0 loss to Stanford earlier this season on Aug. 31.

JMU will continue Mid-American Conference play when it hosts Longwood on Friday, Sept. 26. Game time in Harrisonburg is scheduled for 5 p.m. and will stream on ESPN+.
