BOONE, N.C. — The App State field hockey team defeated the Ohio Bobcats 5-3 in the first conference game of the season.

The Mountaineers (5-1, 1-0 MAC) found their rhythm in the second half, scoring all five goals in the last 30 minutes to defeat the Bobcats (1-6, 0-1 MAC).

Sophia Baxter, Sarah Callery, Hadley Kuzmicky and Baylie Phillips all scored in the victory, with Lise Boekaar adding three assists. She now has the most single-season assists in program history with 14, passing Carli Ciocco, who had 13 in 2022. Three more assists pushes Boekaar past Friederike Stegen for the most career assists in App State Field Hockey history.

The Bobcats came out fast, scoring two goals in the opening period. Both teams earned three penalty corners, but the Mountaineers were unable to score.

The second period was scoreless for both teams. The Mountaineers earned two corners but were unable to find the back of the cage. Claire Grenis recorded her first save of the game, thwarting a counterattack and keeping the score 2-0 heading into halftime.

The Mountaineers' offense exploded in the third period, tallying four shots and scoring three times. Kuzmicky put the Mountaineers on the board with her fourth goal of the season, assisted by Bridget Donovan. Callery scored her first goal of the day and season by tipping in a shot from Boekaar. Phillips scored off a penalty corner in the final moments of the period, giving the Mountaineers their first lead of the day, 3-2.

With the Mountaineers holding the lead in the fourth, Ohio battled back and scored the equalizer, tying the contest at three apiece. With less than two minutes remaining in regulation, Baxter found the back of the cage, assisted by Boekaar, to give the Mountaineers a late lead. To close out the contest, Frederique Grimbergen took the ball past midfield, where a diving effort from Kuzmicky set up Callery for a diving goal, pushing the lead to two and giving the Mountaineers a 5-3 victory in the conference opener.

The Mountaineers remain in the High Country to take on Vermont on Sunday. First touch is slated for 11 a.m. at the Dr. Jan C. Watson Field at the Brandon & Erica M. Adcock Field Hockey Complex.

FARMVILLE, Va. - In the Ball State field hockey's teams Mid-American Conference opener, senior Grace Clokie scored the game-winning goal in overtime to push the Cardinals past Longwood University by a score of 4-3 Friday afternoon at Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field. 

With the win, Ball State improved to 3-5 overall and has now started conference action 1-0 while Longwood drops to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in MAC play. 

Clokie netted the game-winning goal just three minutes into OT after teammate Emma van Hal dished out the assist. The goal marked Clokie's fifth of her career. 

Both teams came ready to play with a high intensity for their first MAC game. Longwood would get on the board first after a score from Channy Johnson which occurred late in the first quarter. 

The Cardinals were able to adjust their defense in the second stanza, which caused the Lancers some offensive trouble. Ball State took advantage of the opportunity with a Jessica Rochat goal at the 22:36 mark to knot the contest 1-1.  The goal was the first for Rochat as a Cardinal. 

BSU continued to control the tempo of the game and would add another score at the 29:34 mark. This time the goal was scored by Ellie Francois with Rochat earning the assist to give the Cardinals the 2-1 edge at intermission.  The goal was Francois second of her career.

After the break, emotions were high, and the Cardinals carried their first half momentum into the third quarter as Lauren Lewis found the back of the cage for her first career score with just a little over three minutes shaved off the clock. Emily Kate Covert was awarded the assist for the goal which gave Ball State the 3-1 advantage versus the Lancers. 

Longwood didn't give up though and would add two goals in the final 15 minutes of action to tie the game 3-3 with just nine minutes remaining in regulation. Both squads remained scoreless the rest of the contest which would then send the game into an extra period. 

Defensively, Carleigh Hofelich was in goal again for BSU earning her second victory along with collecting seven saves. 

The Ball State field hockey team returns to non-conference play when it travels to Virginia Commonwealth Sunday. The game is slated for 1 pm ET.

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Five Dukes scored to push James Madison past Central Michigan, 5-2, in Mid-American Conference field hockey action on Friday afternoon at Cristy Freese Field.

The victory was No. 250 for Head Coach Christy Morgan while leading the Dukes (1991-99, 2014-Pres.). Morgan boasts a 250-153-2 (.620) record across her 21 seasons in Harrisonburg, and 255-167-2 (.604) in her 22-year coaching career.

The Dukes (5-3, 1-0 MAC) scored five unanswered goals in the first three periods to top CMU (4-3, 0-1 MAC). JMU held an advantage in shots (17-11), while the Chippewas earned more penalty corners (8-4).

Alice Roeper registered three points, posting a goal and an assist. Julie Narleski, Madelief Molier, Avery Ruckman and Skyler Brown all found the back of the net as well. Molly Schreiner started in net, making a pair of saves and allowing zero goals in 38:31 of action. Hannah Popolis finished the game, tallying four saves in the win.

Cameron Pluciennik recorded both goals for CMU, while Carolena Ryon and Hailey Bainer each added an assist. Ashley Clogger rejected five JMU shots, logging 41:56 in cage before Jenna Billig took over the remainder of the game, finishing with a pair of saves.

JMU held the Chippewas without a shot in the opening frame but could not find the back of the net either, resulting in a 0-0 score after one.

Narleski opened the scoring forty seconds into the second quarter, picking up a loose ball along the end line and pushing it in to make it 1-0. Less than two minutes later, Roeper dribbled past a defender and dished to Molier for the easy tap-in for the 2-0 lead.

Halfway through the second, Brown produced a direct shot at the top of the circle that was saved and collected by Ruckman, who chipped it in to give JMU a 3-0 advantage.

Early in the third, scored on a fadeaway solo shot for a 4-0 Dukes' lead. Brown recorded the Dukes' final goal of the contest, driving down the right side of the circle and delivering a rocket to the bottom left corner.

With under five minutes remaining in regulation, Pluciennik broke through with a deflection off a shot from Bainer during a penalty corner situation. On an uneven rush, Ryon passed in front of the goal to Pluciennik for the easy score with 13 seconds left.

James Madison will complete its trek to the Great Lakes State on Sunday, Sept. 21, when the Dukes square off against No. 8 Michigan. Action in Ann Arbor is slated for 1 p.m. and will stream on Big Ten Plus.

AMHERST, Mass. -- No. 12 Massachusetts (7-0) earned its first victory in the Mid-American conference with a 4-0 shutout win over Kent State (1-5) on Friday at Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. The Minutewomen recorded their fourth shutout of the season, conceding just three corners and seven shots on goal in the contest. 

Massachusetts earned its third victory over the Golden Flashes all-time, and first in the regular season. The Minutewomen have faced the Golden Flashes in two NCAA Tournament matchups all-time, claiming the win in both games. 

Senior Alexa Collins recorded her first career brace, scoring Massachusetts' first two goals of the afternoon on a pair of well-placed deflections. The Limerick, Pennsylvania native set a new single-season career high with three goals on the year. 

Freshman Lina Kroeger and sophomore Cara Falconer each tallied their first goals of the season in the matchup. Senior Gabrielle Benkenstein now sits third on the team in points after dishing out a pair of assists on the afternoon. 

Senior Myrte van Herwijnen recorded her fourth clean sheet of the season, totaling seven saves including three in the fourth quarter. The Huizen, The Netherlands native currently sits second nationally in total shutouts behind Northwestern's Juliana Boon with five.  

The Golden Flashes were led by Floortje van Eijden who recorded seven saves. 

Massachusetts opened the scoring as Alexa Collins tipped home a pass from Sophia Ponzini with 2:25 remaining in the first quarter. 

The second quarter was a stalemate with neither team recording a shot and score remaining 1-0 in favor of the Minutewomen.

Collins put home her second goal of the game, deflecting in an assist from Gabrielle Benkenstein with 8:33 to play in the third quarter. Lina Kroeger converted a penalty corner for her first career goal, giving the Minutewomen a 3-0 advantage with 4:26 left in the third. 

Cara Falconer capped the third quarter with her first goal of the season, generating a 4-0 UMass lead with 2:38 remaining in the period. 

Myrte van Herwijnen withstood late pressure from the Golden Flashes, making three saves in the final 15 minutes of play. 

The final whistle sounded with the score 4-0 in favor of the Minutewomen.

OXFORD, Ohio – The RedHawks clobbered Bellarmine Friday in an 11-0 match, tying the program record for most goals scored in a single game set in 1975 against Cedarville. Berta Mata recorded a hat trick, scoring in periods two, three, and four. Miami improves to 4-2 with the win while Bellarmine falls to 0-7 with the loss.

Sloane Wearren put up the first goal of the game five minutes into the first period, recording her second score of the season to make it 1-0.

Justina Intzes made it 2-0 five minutes later, scoring unassisted.Bet Gifra netted the third goal of the period to round out an early 3-0 start for the RedHawks. Intzes scored her second goal of the game two minutes into the second period. Gifra recorded the assist on the score.

Miami capitalized on a penalty corner two minutes later. Jülia Fernandez found the back of the net with assists from Mata and Becca Lawn on the insert. Mata scored her first goal of the game and Miami's third in a four-minute span to inflate the lead to 6-0.

Malena Sabez scored her fifth goal of the season unassisted to make it 7-0. A goal from Paula Navarro off an assist from Wearren capped off an 8-0 first half for the RedHawks.

The lone goal of the third period came from Mata after just one minute of play and made it a 9-0 contest.

Navarro struck again just 28 seconds into the fourth period, pushing the lead into double digits off an assist from Wearren. Mata completed her hat trick late in the fourth period off another assist by Wearren to finalize an 11-0 shutout.

Miami will welcome Michigan State to Oxford this Sunday at 1 p.m., where they will look to stay undefeated at home.
