Southern Illinois Breaks Pair of MAC Records; Miami Holds Slight Lead After Day Two of Swimming and Diving Championships

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Miami remained in first place with 263 points following the second day of the 2024 Mid-American Conference Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships. Missouri State jumped into second place (262) after tallying 200 points on Thursday night, while Southern Illinois sits in third with 229.5 points. 

Missouri State’s Brunno Suzuski opened the night with a gold medal in the 500 free, touching first with a time of 4:26.02. In total, four Bears finished in the top five of the race to help Missouri State climb the team standings early. 

Additionally, Missouri State has now won the 500 free in eight-consecutive championships. 

The RedHawks received a huge swim from Henju Duvenhage in the 200 IM as the senior won the event with a swim of 1:43.96. This marked Duvenhage’s fourth-straight year winning the event at the MAC Championships. 

Not to be outdone, Southern Illinois’ Alex Santiago set a new MAC record for the second time of the day in the 50 free finals, claiming the top spot with a time of 19.12. In the morning prelims, Santiago touched first with a mark of 19.29, which broke the previous conference record by .28 seconds. 

In the first event on the diving board of the championships, UIC’s Harrison Nolan claimed first place with a score of 379.75. Overall, the top three divers were from UIC as the Flames picked up major points on the boards on Thursday night. 

Southern Illinois ended the night with a victory in the 400 medley relay for the second-straight year as Jered Moore, Benedek Andor, Jack Khrypunov, Alex Santiago shattered the previous conference and pool record with a 3:07.51 mark to cap off day two.
