MAC Men’s Swimmer of the Week
Owen Chaye, Ball State, Senior
Senior freestyle specialist Owen Chaye turned in the best meet of his career last week at the Miami Invitational (Dec. 1-3), breaking three program records over the three-day event. Chaye wasted little time accomplishing his first record, doing so in Thursday’s 50 freestyle prelims at 20.04. He was even better in Thursday’s finals, however, opening the 200 freestyle relay with the first sub-20-second 50 free in program history at 19.91 to better his earlier mark. The effort also helped the relay finish with a program record mark of 1:20.21. Chaye would go on to place first in the 50 free finals race, clocking in at 20.05. In Friday’s action, Chaye led the squad and placed sixth overall in the 200m at 1:40.43. On the final day of competition Saturday, Chaye added his third program record of the meet by clocking in at 44.36 in the prelims of the 100 freestyle. He would go on to finish second overall with a finals time of 44.51. In addition to the record-setting 200 freestyle relay, Chaye swam leadoff for the sixth-place 800 free relay (6:48.77 – 10th in program history), as well as anchor for the third-place 400 free (3:01.24 – 4th in program history), second-place 200 medley (1:28.60), and third-place 400 medley (3:16.55) relays. |
MAC Men’s Diver of the Week
Cole Tremewan, UIC, Sophomore
Tremewan posted two NCAA Zone-qualifying scores at the prestigious House of Champions invitational. Finishing in the top three in both events among a field of 16 divers from eight schools, Tremewan increased his total to three overall Zone scores. He had the highest score in 3-meter in the qualifying round, a career high 324.98.
MAC Women’s Co-Swimmers of the Week
Nicole Maier, Miami, Junior
Nicole Maier won all eight of her finals events at the Miami Invitational, taking first individually in the 500 freestyle (4:43.44), 400 IM (4:10.54) and 200 butterfly (1:57.19). Maier also posted individual times of 22.80 in the 200 freestyle relay, 48.14 in the 400 medley relay, 21.88 in the 200 medley relay, 1:45.27 in the 800 freestyle relay and 48.46 in the 400 freestyle relay. Alongside her wins, Maier also earned 5 individual NCAA "B" Cuts ( 100 free, 200 free, 500 free, 400 IM, 200 fly), set 2 new individual Miami University School Records (100 free, 200 fly), set 3 new individual Corwin M. Nixon Pool Records (200 fly, 400 IM, 200 free) and posted 2 NCAA 2022 Championship "invited" individual times (400 IM, 200 free).
Madelyn Gatrall, Akron, Junior
Junior Madelyn Gatrall had a phenomenal 2022 Zippy Invitational performance, winning every event including three individual events and five relays while achieving two NCAA B-Cut times and setting a new Mid-American Conference record. She registered her record-breaking performance as the leadoff of the 400-yard medley relay team, snapping the MAC and Akron 100-yard backstroke standard (51.84). Gatrall replaced the 52.10 record set by Sadie Fazekas in 2019 at the MAC Championships hosted at Akron. The 400-yard medley relay team won gold with a 3:35.48 time. Gatrall backed-up her record-breaking performance by clocking a 51.85 time in the 100-yard backstroke for gold and posted another NCAA B-Cut time as she won the 50-yard freestyle (22.52).She also won the 200-yard backstroke (1:53.50). Gatrall won all five relay events and posted the fastest split times in all but one, clocking a 22.34 in the 200 Free Relay (Team), a 49.33 in the 400 Free Relay (3:18.16) and a 1:47.35 in the 800 Free Relay (7:15.67). The 200-yard medley relay team flew to a 1:37.82 time, just two-tenths of second from the meet record as Gatrall posted a 24.42 split. |

MAC Women’s Diver of the Week
Sydney Rice, Miami, Freshman
Sydney Rice took first in two of three diving events for Miami University at the Miami Invitational, topping the podium in the 3 meter dive (299.50 points) and 1 meter dive (240.50 points). The freshman diver also placed second in the platform dive with 240.50 points. |
