YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University soccer team defeated Central Michigan University, 3-0, at Scicluna Field Sunday, Sept. 20, erupting for three second-half goals to claim its first MAC win of the season.
Eastern entered the match having drawn each of its previous two conference contests, but the Eagles left no doubt Sunday, breaking a scoreless deadlock in the 60th minute and adding two more goals before the final whistle to post a dominant shutout victory over the Chippewas.
How It Happened
The first half was a tightly contested, scoreless 45 minutes, with neither side able to break through. Eastern held a clear edge in possession and pressure but could not convert, sending both teams to the locker room level at 0-0.
The second half was a different story entirely. Meredith Werner (Broadview Heights, Ohio/North Royalton) broke the deadlock in the 60th minute, finishing off a pass from Olivia Sipsock (Medina, Ohio/Medina) to put Eastern ahead 1-0. The goal was Werner's first at Eastern Michigan.
Seven minutes later, Christie Fransen (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster/Bowling Green) stepped to the spot and converted a penalty kick in the 67th minute to double the advantage, making it 2-0. The goal was Fransen's second penalty kick goal at EMU and her third goal of the 2026 season.
Eastern put the match away in the 79th minute when Ella Miller (Mount Morris, Pa./Morgantown) found the back of the net off assists from Kate Cerveny (Elizabeth City, N.C./Northeast Academy for Aerospace and Advanced Technologies) and Fransen, completing the 3-0 final. The goal was Miller's first at Eastern Michigan.
In goal, Ella Holland (Dunwoody, Ga./Dunwoody/Samford) was steady throughout, making one save to preserve the clean sheet and record her 20th career shutout at Eastern Michigan.

Kent, Ohio – The Kent State Soccer team got off on the right foot in home Mid-American Conference play as freshman Lila Simon scored a pair of goals to lift her team to a 2-0 victory over the Miami RedHawks at home on Sunday.
The scoring started in the 23rd minute for the Flashes as Samantha Miller got a shot off from a free kick that was saved and deflected right to Simon who put the ball in the back of the net for her first goal of the day. That was enough to propel the Flashes into a 1-0 halftime lead 22 minutes later, at the break.
In the 65th minute, the Flashes stretched the field as Ava Todd sent a long pass from a free kick to Allison Collins who gave the ball to Simon, who struck the ball into the back of the net from distance for her second goal of the game. That was enough to be the difference as the Flashes defense held tough for the remainder of the game to pull out the two-goal victory.
The RedHawks were able to outshoot the Flashes in total shots by a count of 9-7, but KSU finished with four shots on goal compared to three from Miami. Miami also finished with seven corner kicks while the blue and gold recorded two.Senior goalkeeper Leah Shaffer finished with another trio of saves after 90 minutes in net on nine shots faced for the Golden Flashes.

ATHENS, Ohio. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer earned its third straight shutout with a 2-0 victory over Ohio at Chieftain Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Additionally, UMass picks up its second consecutive clean sheet over a Mid-American Conference opponent.
The Minutewomen improve to 8-1-0 overall, including 2-0-0 in MAC play, while the Bobcats moved to 3-5-0 on the season and 0-2-0 in the league.
Massachusetts scores first for the sixth time this season, as Nia Hislop put on the board first at the 28:03 mark. Taking a pass from Emma Burke, Hislop chipped in a shot to the top left of the goal to make it a 1-0 contest. Burke's assist marked the first in her career.
In the first half alone, UMass and Ohio were even in shots at seven apiece. The Minutewomen placed four of those shots on frame, while the Bobcats tallied two on goal.
Amelia Deren extended UMass' lead to 2-0 at 56:51 of the match. The Minutewomen were awarded a penalty kick, as Deren took the opportunity and converted for her third penalty kick goal of the season.
Ohio edged out Massachusetts in shots, 16-15, but the Minutewomen had the advantage in shots on goal, 9-7. Ohio tallied seven corners, while UMass had three on the day.
Monica Curry and Caroline Dickson led the team with three shots each, with Deren and Aline Traber recording two apiece. Five other Minutewomen registered one shot on the afternoon. Curry's three shots were all on goal, while Dickson place two on net.
Leah Nisenfeld totaled seven saves and allowed no goals in 90 minutes of action for her fourth shutout of the season, and the 11th of her career.
For Ohio, Ayla Rammel allowed two goals and saved seven shots through 90 minutes of play.
