Blyden, Smitek Named Scholar Athletes of the Week

The Scholar Athlete of the Week Award is presented to a MAC male and/or female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. An institution can nominate up to one male and one female student-athlete per week in any of that current season's sports. The winners are selected by a representative of the MAC's Faculty Athletics Representatives (FARs).

Week’s Achievements (detailed description of week’s events): Freshman Leroy Blyden Jr. averaged 20.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 4.5 apg, and 1.0 spg to go along with a 4.5 assist/turnover ratio in two games last week. Blyden opened the week with an efficient 22-point, five-rebound, and four-assist outing at UMass as he hit 7-of-10 field-goal attempts, 2-of-3 three-point shots, and all six of his free-throw attempts. He then tallied 19 points, five assists, and four rebounds and hit a game-winning three-pointer with 7.7 seconds left in the Rockets’ 73-72 win over arch-rival Bowling Green.

Week’s Achievements (detailed description of week’s events): Audrey Smitek helped the Broncos pick up two more wins in a double-header on Friday against Illinois State and Grand Valley State. Smitek had the match-winning point in the win over ISU. At No. 3 singles she defeated Nicole Iosio 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-4. Later in the afternoon she was again responsible for the match-winning point, putting the Broncos up 4-1 over GVSU. She defeated Vale Mozas at No. 3 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. She is now 3-1 in dual matches so far this season. She also went 2-0 in doubles with partner Frida Weijerman, helping the Broncos secure the doubles point in both wins.
