TOLEDO, Ohio - Tucker Gleason threw for four touchdowns and the Toledo defense shut down the Ball State offense in a 38-9 victory at the Glass Bowl on Saturday.
With the victory, Toledo moves to 7-4, 5-2 in MAC play, and is now tied for second place with Miami, Ohio and Central Michigan, and one game behind conference leader Western Michigan (6-1) with one game left for all five teams. The top two teams in the standings with play for the MAC Championship at Ford Field in Detroit on Dec. 6.
Gleason put the Rockets up early with a pair of touchdown passes in the first quarter and Toledo never looked back. Junior Vandeross III caught seven passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns, and became the seventh Rocket to eclipse the career 200-reception mark. Senior Chip Trayanum led the rushing attack with 128 yards and a touchdown on 15 attempts. It was his fourth 100-yard game of the season and pushed him over 2,000 yards for his career.
Toledo's defense held Ball State just 308 yards of total offense and forced three turnovers on its way to a record-setting day. The Rocket D racked up a school-record 17 tackles for loss and tied the program record with seven sacks, holding its opponent to single digits for the third consecutive game. Junior linebacker K'Von Sherman paced the Rockets with eight tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss. Senior safety Emmanuel McNeil-Warren added eight tackles and 2.0 stops behind the line of scrimmage.
