Akron Leads After First Day of the Zips Classic

Toledo Wins Four Events on Opening Day of Eastern Classic | Friday Results
YPSILANTI, Mich. –
Toledo women's swimming and diving opened up the 2025-26 season with four first-place finishes at the Eastern Classic in Ypsilanti, Mich. on Friday evening.

The 400 medley relay team, consisting of Leah EvansGrace HenelyMaggie Spybrook and Janne Slegers began the meet by taking first with a final time of 3:46.27.  

Sophomore Rosie Richards earned a first-place finish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:55.74. In the 200 IM, Evans touched the wall at 2:05.99 to place first while Slegers followed in third with a time of 2:06.62. Sophomore Helena Pinto Coelho Lopes made her first appearance as a Rocket and took first in the 50 freestyle, recording a final mark of 23.46.

The Rockets wrapped up competition with the 800 freestyle relay. The team of Lindsay BrightMaggie SpybrookClarke Doyle and Claire Kemmere recorded a final time of 7:52.73 to take third overall.

After the first day of competition, Toledo leads Illinois State, 74-36, and trails Eastern Michigan by eight points in the head-to-head scores, 59-51.

Akron Zips Leading After First Day of the Zips Classic | Friday Swim Results | Friday Dive Results 
AKRON, Ohio - The Akron swimming and diving team finished the first day of the Zips Classic in first place and set a meet record in the 400-yard Medley Relay.

The Zips finished day one with 432 points while Cleveland State finished second with 219 and Youngstown State finished third with 202.

Akron started the day off with a third-place finish in the 1-meter dive, as Elizabeth Noble took third with a score of 238.50.

The Zips took two of the top three times in the 400-yard Medley Relay, with the "Z" team of Martyna Piesko (54.18), Claire Cox (1:00.37), Felicia Klintemar (52.38) and Ada Szwabinska (49.29) finishing with a meet record time of 3:36.22. The previous meet record was set in 2021 by Akron's relay team of Gatrall, Fischer, Watson and Nogaj (3:36.51). The Zip's "S" team of Avery Knight (55.36), Efthymia Mazaraki (1:03.43), Addy Soehnlen (55.27) and Helena Lalkovic (49.84) finished third with a time of 3:43.90.

In the 500-yard Free, Lalkovic took the top time of 4:53.98 while Elle Couture finished third (4:58.01) and Maggie Patterson took fourth (4:58.63).

Klintemar took the top time in the 200-Yard IM (2:00.59) while Knight finished third (2:05.81) and Piesko finished fourth (2:07.28). Akron saw Szwabinska take second in the 50-Yard Free with a time of 22.72 while Callie Parks finished fourth with a time of 23.54. Olivia Oyster of Xavier set a meet record with a time of 22.29, breaking her previous meet record time of 22.69 in 2024.

Akron concluded the first day of the Zips Classic with two of the top three times in the 800-Yard Free Relay. The Zips "Z" team of Klintemar (1:50.19), Lalkovic (1:51.60), Couture (1:53.91) and Szwabinska (1:51.27) took first with a time of 7:26.97 while the "I" team of Cora Spetz (1:55.63), Brienne Trumpower (1:53.06), Patterson (1:53.06) and Hannah Trainer (1:52.77) took third with a time of 7:35.38.

On the men's side, Joe Parkhurst of Cleveland State set a meet record in the 50-yard Free with a time of 20.34. He broke the previous record of 20.47, set by Cole Grosshans of Miami (OH) in 2019. Cleveland State also set a meet record in the 800-Yard Free Relay, as the team of Jaden Daviller, Daniel Lyngaas, Gabe Hudgens and Jacopo Lanzo finished with a time of 6:41:16. The Vikings beat the previous meet record of 6:43.08 set by UC Santa Barbara in 2018.

The Zips return to action tomorrow, October 11 to conclude the Zips Classic.
 

UMass Finishes Day One at Justin Jennings Invite
HAMILTON, N.Y.
 – The University of Massachusetts swimming and diving team completed day one of competition at the Justin Jennings Invitational, hosted by Colgate, at the Lineberry Natatorium on Friday evening.

The Minutewomen sit in second with a score of 464, following behind Colgate (553.5). The women's team sits ahead of Le Moyne (249) and Saint Francis (189.5) in third and fourth, respectively.

The Minutemen lead with 558 points, so far, over Colgate (393) and Le Moyne (351) in second and third, respectively.

Women's Swimming & Diving
Freshman Flora Klimesch began the individual events with a first-place finish in the 1,650 freestyle (17:17.86), while junior Olga Stoura took fifth in the event with a time of 18:46.24.

Sophomore Maria Grishaeva grabbed the gold medal in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:35.38, with junior Diya Ackerman-Vallala collecting the bronze with a time of 4:40.32. Junior Ece Yildirim placed sixth after swimming a time of 4:51.74 in the event.

The 200 freestyle saw junior Beren Cakiroglu claim the top spot with a time of 1:54.03. Sophomore Hannah Schoenauer placed fifth (1:59.42) and senior Lexi Alexen earned 10th (2:02.73).

Sophomore Courtney Tedesco placed fifth in the 100 backstroke (1:00.00), while junior Lindsay Burbage sat atop the podium in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.67. Cakiroglu (1:07.61) and Grishaeva (1:08.15) took fifth and ninth, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke.

Klimesch (2:10.17) and Schoenauer (2:12.02) placed second and third, respectively, in the 200 butterfly. Tedesco grabbed the silver in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.62, followed by sophomore Karinne Everly (25.00) in fifth and Burbage (25.24) in sixth.

The 400 medley relay team of Grishaeva, Burbage, Everly and Tedesco combined for a time of 3:53.64 to take second in the event.

On The Boards
In the one-meter dive, sophomores Danielle Guerin and Khrystyna Yaremyn took first and second, respectively. Guerin totaled 247.80, while Yaremyn had a six-dive total of 245.03.
