AMHERST, Mass. – The No. 11 University of Massachusetts field hockey team scored early and often, leading 4-0 just 10:10 into the game, on the way to a convincing 5-1 win over defending Patriot League Champion Boston University in the home opener at the Gladchuck Field Hockey Complex on Friday. Emily Barrett scored two goals against the Terriers for a second straight season while Kristy Leonard, Isla Campbell and Neva Eisenga added goals as well. All six of the game's goals were scored in the first half.
With the win, UMass improved to 3-0, two of the victories coming against reigning NCAA Tournament teams.
Along with the goal scoring, five different Minutewomen dished an assist as well. Defensively, UMass allowed just nine shots all game, only four of them coming over the first three quarters.
The scoring began in the third minute as an Amber Fairon shot was saved, but Leonard put home the rebound for a 1-0 lead.
Less than two minutes later, Isla Campbell scored for a second straight game, finishing a tip in front of the cage for a 2-0 advantage.
Less than two minutes after that, Barrett put home a direct shot off a penalty corner, then just 4:06 later, she took a feed from Jenna Herbster, carried to the top of the circle and fired a reverse into the back of the cage. In the end, the Minutewomen scored four goals in the span of 7:45 for a 4-0 lead.
Boston University's Maddie Hudson put home her own rebound at the 28:17 mark to pull within 4-1. But UMass answered right back, as Eisenga fired home her first of the season off a corner at the 30-minute mark.
The Minutewomen went on to hold a 5-0 edge in third-quarter shots, but couldn't put one on goal. Fourth-quarter shots were tied at five, with each goalkeeper making two saves to keep the final score at 5-1.
Final shots for the game was 25-9 in favor of UMass. The Minutewomen held a 10-4 edge in penalty corners. Rozárie Mrázová stopped one of two shots sent her way in the first half, while Colleen Campbell stopped both chances sent her way in the second. Boston University's Sophie Ortyl finished with seven saves.
The Minutewomen return home on Sunday to host UMass Lowell at 1 p.m. Sunday is for the Kennedy Cup and features Youth Day and Bark in the Park.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Led by two goals from sophomore Tori Cisney, the Ohio field hockey team (2-1) began its two-game road trip with a thrilling, 3-2, last-second victory over Queens (1-2) Friday night (Sept. 4).
The Bobcats scored three unanswered goals after Queens went up 2-0 early in the second quarter to secure the win.
Overall, Ohio scored three goals on 12 shots with nine on goal, while Queens scored two goals on six shots with three on goal.
Individually, Ohio was led by Cisney (Cleona, Pa.) with two goals, while junior Deborah James (Hertfordshire, England) added her second goal of the season. Sophomore Rowan Casey (Columbus, Ohio) and junior Marie De Grande (Groot-Bijgaarden, Belgium) both added assists for the Bobcats.
In goal, junior Molly Schreiner (State College, Pa.) got the start in goal, allowing two goals and making one save in 60 minutes of action.
The Bobcats started the game aggressively on offense, earning the first six penalty corners of the game to set the tone early. Despite the pressure from Ohio, it was Queens that got on the board first after its first penalty corner of the game.
Ohio had two more penalty corners before the end of the first period, but it could not capitalize, sending the game to the second period with Queens up 1-0.
The Royals started that second period hot as well, scoring just after the first minute of the quarter to take a 2-0 lead.
The Bobcats responded quickly as the aggression on offense paid off less than a minute later, with their first goal of the game coming from Cisney.
After the game reached a bit of a standstill in the second quarter, Ohio again found the back of the net, scoring following a penalty corner to tie the game. That crucial goal came off the stick of James, who scored her second goal of the season, with assists coming from De Grande and Casey.
Following the goal from James, the game headed into halftime tied at 2-2, and third period was a defensive struggle with just one penalty corner going to Queens in the entirety of the quarter.
The Royals opened the fourth quarter with two penalty corners, but they failed to find the back of the net and capitalize.
Queens was not able to get a shot off for the rest of the game, however Ohio wasn't able to get much going down the stretch. That was until Cisney delivered in the clutch with her second goal of the game with under two minutes to go, securing the 3-2 victory.
Ohio is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 6 when the Bobcats head to Winston-Salem, N.C. to take on No. 7 Wake Forest. First touch is set for Noon ET and can be seen on ACCNX.
