OXFORD, Ohio – The RedHawks clobbered Michigan State Friday, handing the Spartans a 6-0 shutout loss after scoring four goals in the first 15 minutes of play in the season's home opener. Sloane Wearren was critical to Miami's barrage of goals, scoring twice to add insurance for Miami. The RedHawks move to 2-1 with the win, while Michigan State falls to 2-1.
Miami was awarded the game's first penalty corner five minutes into the first quarter, but a shot by Julia Fernandez went just wide. The next corner for Miami came five minutes later, and Fernandez this time capitalized and scored on an assist by Finley Payne, 1-0.
Reigning MAC Offensive Player of the Year Malena Sabez scored her first goal of the season unassisted with four minutes to go in the first to make it a 2-0 game.
Less than a minute later, Kylie Coughlin inserted on a penalty corner and Toto Scarlatti set up Maxi Aguirregomezcorta for Miami's third score of the game.
In the final second of play in the first quarter, Sloane Wearren shot and scored, assisted by Sabez, to give the RedHawks a 4-0 lead after 15 minutes of play.
Two minutes into the second quarter, Bet Gifra scored unassisted, her first goal of the season, to extend Miami's lead to five goals.
The Spartans took their first two shots of the game on a penalty corner midway through the second period, but both were blocked by the Miami defense. The RedHawks defended another corner to keep MSU scoreless at halftime.
After a quiet 13 minutes, Wearren broke the third-quarter stalemate, scoring on an assist by Justina Intzes to make it 6-0.
Miami defended one penalty corner in the fourth, finalizing a 6-0 shutout win over Michigan State.
Wearren took three shots and two shots on goal, both of which were goals. This marks the second multi-goal game of her career (10/24/25 vs. Ohio).
Sabez finished the game with four shots, three shots on goal, one goal, and one assist. Fernandez finished the game with three shots, two shots on goal, and a goal.
Gifra finished the game with two shots, two shots on goal, and a goal. Aguirregomezcorta finished the game with three shots, one shot on goal, and a goal.
The RedHawks outshot Michigan State 18-5.and held Michigan State to just two shots on goal. Nicky Sjouken saved one and Macarena Gonzalez saved the other.
The RedHawks generated nine penalty corners compared to just three for Michigan State.
Miami will travel to Evanston, Ill. to face the fourth-ranked University of Iowa on Friday, Sept. 11 at 3 p.m. and the reigning national champion and top-ranked Northwestern Wildcats on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 11 a.m.
