TOLEDO, Ohio – Toledo junior Bence Bertenyi carded a final round 2-under-par 69 on Tuesday to win the Inverness Intercollegiate title. Bertenyi's strong play helped the Rockets tie for second place in a loaded field that included five teams ranked in the Top 10 of the Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Preseason Coaches Poll. UT's second-place showing marked its best finish ever in the tournament's history, which began in 2000.

Bertenyi registered a nearly-flawless final round with just one bogey. He followed up his lone miscue on No. 10 with birdies on Nos. 11, 13 and 16 to capture the win. Texas Tech's Ben Gregg had a chance to capture a share of the individual title but registered pars on his final four holes.

"It's really exciting to see Bence win the title," said Head Coach Jeff Roope. "It's just a continuation of what he really worked hard on over the summer. He played probably one of the more ambitious schedules of any amateur player in the world, and it's proven to be very beneficial. He is playing high-level golf and it's amazing to see what he did on a championship golf course like Inverness that has so many humps and bumps and so many places where you can hit the wall. He just kept cruising with a good game plan that he constructed."

Toledo shot a tournament-best 7-under 277 in the final round, with four Rockets finishing in the red. That was nearly enough to defeat defending national champion Auburn, who captured the team title at 11-over par. The Rockets shared second place with East Tennessee State at 12-over par.

"I was really hopeful we could put something together on the front nine and get somewhere around par when we made the turn," said Roope. "I thought we would have a chance on the back nine because the wind was going to dissipate. There were some birdie opportunities, and our guys have played so much high-level golf that they're good enough players to make some birdies. I didn't dream they were going to make that many down the stretch, but they're veterans and I was extremely proud of the momentum they had and the effort they put forth."

Sophomore Harry McArdle led the way for UT in Tuesday's final round with a 3-under 68 and tied for 14th place at 4-over par. He bogeyed his first two holes of the day before catching fire on the back nine with four birdies in a five-hole stretch.

Senior Brooks Pawlak and junior Zane Aiken each carded 1-under 70s. Pawlak birdied his final three holes, while Aiken opened his round with two birdies.

Toledo is back in action next week when it travels to the Windy City for the Chicago Highlands Invitational on Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 21-22.
