SYRACUSE, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts tennis claimed a 4-3 victory over ACC opponent Syracuse at the Drumlins Country Club on Saturday morning.
In the win, five of six singles matches went to third sets, while four sets went to a tie break. Sophomore
Martina Pavissich clinched the match for UMass with a three-set victory that saw two of the four tiebreakers.
Syracuse earned the doubles point with wins at courts No. 1 and No. 2. The two teams played out its remaining match on court No. 3, as Pavissich and
Madara Markevica defeated Leena Bennetto and Emma Scaldalai of Syracuse, 6-4.
In singles competition, Syracuse's Monika Wojcik grabbed the first point with a 6-2, 6-1 win over
Amelia Tye at No. 2, to make it a 2-0 match. Markevica cut Syracuse's lead down to one with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 triumph over the Orange's Haram Kim at No. 5. The Orange made it a 3-1 contest with Nelly Knezkova defeating
Ella Faessler in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 1 singles.
The Minutewomen secured three straight points with
Fiona Ao downing Syracuse's Scaldalai, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(6) at No. 3, before
Amanda de Oliveira won 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-4 at the No. 6 position over Constance Levivier of Syracuse. Pavissich picked up the match point at No. 3 singles, taking down Syracuse's Bennetto, 5-7, 7-6(3), 7-6(5).
UMass continues on the road with a match against Le Moyne on Sunday, February 8, in DeWitt, New York, at 5 p.m
