Akron Zips
AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's swimming and diving team opened its 2026-27 season with a 200.5-179.5 victory over Bowling Green on Friday, Oct. 9, highlighted by strong performances across the swimming events and diving boards.
The Zips claimed several event victories, led by
Leah Nebraska,
Abbey Cronin,
Claire Cox and
Avery Knight in the pool. Akron also showcased its depth in the individual medley and backstroke events while earning valuable points in the distance freestyle races.
Nebraska led the way in the sprint and butterfly events, winning the 50-yard butterfly in 24.44 seconds before finishing second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.06 seconds.
Addy Soehnlen added a runner-up finish in the 150-yard butterfly, touching the wall in 1:29.74.
Cronin delivered a pair of victories in the backstroke, winning the 50-yard event in 26.30 seconds and the 100-yard backstroke in 56.13 seconds.
Olive Rogers finished second to Cronin in both events, clocking 26.79 seconds in the 50-yard backstroke and 56.46 seconds in the 100-yard race. Rogers also captured the 150-yard backstroke in 1:28.34, with Cronin close behind in 1:28.58.
Cox swept the breaststroke events, winning the 50-yard breaststroke in 29.22 seconds and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:02.81. She added another victory in the 150-yard breaststroke, finishing in 1:41.06, while teammate
Madelyn Bosler placed second in 1:42.93.
Knight paced Akron in the individual medley events, winning the 200-yard individual medley in 2:06.73 and the 300-yard individual medley in 3:18.09.
Carrie Caniglia finished second in the 300-yard individual medley in 3:22.48, while
Baylee Corden added a fourth-place finish in 3:24.73.
Akron also made its mark in the distance events.
Beth Abad Nunez won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:26.31, while teammate
Tamara Roques placed third in 10:32.53. Abad Nunez and Roques later finished first and second, respectively, in the 250-yard freestyle, with times of 2:25.37 and 2:25.97.
Helena Lalkovic led the Zips in the freestyle sprints, placing second in the 100-yard freestyle in 50.95 seconds and the 150-yard freestyle in 1:20.97. Brie Trumpower added third-place finishes in both events.
On the diving boards, Akron recorded multiple scoring performances in both disciplines.
Lydia Redd led the Zips in the three-meter event with a second-place score of 260.55, while
Audrey Probe finished fourth with 244.73 points. In the one-meter competition, Probe placed second with 254.70 points, followed by Redd in third with 249.15 and
Annie Haluch in fourth with 247.50.
The Zips will be back in action at
Oliver J. Ocasek Natatorium hosting the Zips Classic on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 16-17.
Massachusetts Minutewomen
HAMILTON, N.Y. – The University of Massachusetts swimming and diving team completed day one of competition at the Colgate Invitational, hosted by Colgate, at the Lineberry Natatorium on Friday evening.
Senior
Olga Stoura started off the individual events for the Minutewomen with a sixth-place finish in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 18:50.74.
Junior
Maria Grishaeva grabbed the bronze medal in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:40.77. Fellow classmate
Karinne Everly took fifth in the event with a time of 4:45.46.
The 200 freestyle saw junior
Elizabeth Lahmann swim into fourth with a time of 1:58.02. Junior
Courtney Tedesco swam into fifth-place with a time of 1:00.09 in the 100 backstroke, with freshman
Mackenzie Gibbons following in sixth with a time of 1:00.55.
In the 100 breaststroke, senior
Lindsay Burbage collected the silver with a time of 1:05.72. Gibbons earned a time of 2:15.66 in the 200 butterfly to take fourth.
Tedesco finished second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.28.
The 400 medley relay team of Grishaeva, Burbage, Tedesco and freshman
Kaitlyn Adams combined for a time of 3:58.84 to secure third place.
Day two of the Colgate Invite is set for 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 10, in Hamilton, N.Y.
