MAC Tennis Wraps Play at EMU Block E Invitational

Bowling Green Falcons vs. EMU Block E Invitational
YPSILANTI, Mich.-- The BGSU tennis team opened up its fall schedule this weekend at Eastern Michigan's Block E Invitational. Teams competing in the tournament were Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Oakland, Toledo, and Youngstown State. The tournament was not scored by team points, but rather each competitor's individual records. Players at the tournament each competed in three rounds of singles matches, and three rounds of doubles matches. Players were broken up into groups for singles matches and the players with the best record in each group were crowned group winners. 

The BGSU Tennis team will be back in action next weekend, Sep.26-27, as they host the Hidden Duals event featuring opponents Butler, Findlay, and Wayne State. 


Eastern Michigan Eagles vs. EMU Block E Invitational
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The 2025-26 season got underway at home for the Eastern Michigan University tennis program as the Eagles played host to the Block E Invitational, Sept. 19-20, at the Chippewa Club. The Eagles welcomed players from Bowling Green State University, Oakland University, the University of Toledo, and Youngstown State University to town with all players slated to play three singles and three doubles matches on the outdoor courts in Ypsilanti.
 
A pair of freshmen got off to hot starts for the Eagles as both Matilde Parreira and Cylova Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya posted 3-0 records in singles play to capture group titles while both also added wins in doubles play. Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya won all three of her matches in Group 2 in straight sets, including a 6-4, 6-4 decision over YSU's Hanna Telzynksa in her EMU and collegiate debut. She captured the group title with a 6-2, 6-4 defeat of UT's Jone Ibanez. Parreira also posted a 3-0 record as she won the Group 8 title. She opened her collegiate career with a 6-0, 6-3 win over BGSU's Brynn Chaffee before winning her final two matches in straight sets as well.
 
Pehal Kharadkar opened her collegiate career with a 6-2, 6-3 win in Group 5 over Line Greyling (YSU), but fell in her final two matches to tie for third in her group. She later secured her first doubles win as well as she joined with Regina Mendez Carreño to take a 6-1 score. The pairings of Lara Diaz Zayas and Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya at Group 1 and Parreira and Sabrina Tolstova at Group 2 each secured a first-round win before falling in their final two matches.
 
The Eagles are back in action Oct. 3-5 with a select group of players heading to Kalamazoo, Mich., to compete in the 2025 Mid-American Conference Fall Individuals, hosted by Western Michigan University at West Hills Athletic Club. The winners of the singles and doubles titles will earn the league's automatic berths into the NCAA Championships in November.

 The Miami University tennis team wrapped up a successful weekend at the Pam Whitehead Invitational, capturing 11 victories, six coming via singles competition.

Toledo Rockets vs. EMU Block E Invitational
YPSILANTI, Mich. –
Toledo women's tennis kicked off the fall season with the Block E Invitational this past weekend, winning 24 matches, the most of any school in the tournament.

The Rockets finished the event with a 16-4 team singles record and an 8-2 team doubles record. Every Rocket that played won either a singles or doubles group.

The event was hosted by Eastern Michigan and was made up of a five-team pool that also included Oakland, Youngstown State and Bowling Green. The teams were split up into nine singles groups and four doubles groups.

The Rockets won five of the seven singles groups that they competed in with undefeated first-place finishes from freshmen Anastasia AkuginovaIsabella Barretto, and Iva Jankovic, and sophomores Neha Guru, and JJ Scholten.

Junior Jone Ibanez and sophomore Annika Munson came away with a 3-0 first-place doubles finish, scoring 6-3 triumphs over Oakland, Youngstown State and Bowling Green.

Iva Jankovic also won a mixed doubles match with Youngstown State sophomore Sarah Partida over Bowling Green and Oakland, giving her a team-leading 3-0 tournament record.

Ball State Cardinals vs. Xavier Fall Invitational 
CINCINNATI, Ohio -
 Sarah Shahbaz and Isabel Tanjuatco were tabbed the most valuable doubles team at the Xavier Fall Invitational this weekend. The Cardinals found success as a team in both singles and doubles throughout the two-day event. The Cardinals played Xavier and Dayton in singles action with one round of doubles versus Northern Kentucky.

Ball State took all three courts from Northern Kentucky in doubles. Isabel Tanjuatco paired up with Sarah Shahbaz defeating Alyssa Cameron and Aaditi Bhat, 6-0. Gabriella Barrera alongside teammate Alana Bristow took down Darya Gneidina and Sydney Zakie by a 6-1 decision while the duo of Anya Tkachyk and Asia Ting Fontana captured a 6-3 victory versus Catherine Cardoso and Haley Slay. 

The Cardinals also found success in singles against the Dayton Flyers winning all six matches in straight sets. Shahbaz beat Kristen Chin (6-4, 6-0), Priyanka Rana captured the win over Montserrat Sierra (6-2, 7-6), Bristow earned her match 7-5, 6-0 and Tanjatco, Barrera, along with Fontana rounded out the victories versus UD in the bottom three spots, respectively. 

Ball State dropped all six singles matches to host Xavier. 

Tanjuatco and Shahbaz paired up at the No. 1 slot in doubles throughout the weekend and defeated Madeleine Rexroat and Ella DeFord of host Xavier by a score of 6-3. The twosome then finished the day off with a 6-2 defeat against Dayton's Mallory Hitchcock and Baby Jordan. The duo went 3-0 to earn the MVP title also earning a doubles victory on Saturday over NKU. 

The Cardinals as a team took all three doubles matches from Dayton on Sunday with Alana Bristow pairing up with Gabriella Barrera for victory along with the BSU doubles tandem of Anya Tkachyk and Asia Ting Fontana. Both teams took their matches by a 6-2 decision. 

On Sunday, Ball State also competed in one singles competition taking five of the six courts from Northern Kentucky. Tanjuatco, Bristow, Jemima Williams-Phillips and Tkachyk all won in straight sets over their respective opponents. Ting Fontana registered a two-set tie breaking victory versus Audit Bhat, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (9-7). 

The Ball State women's tennis team continues fall play when it travels to the Milwaukee Tennis Classic next weekend from Sept. 25-28.
