AKRON, Ohio – University of Massachusetts women's soccer picked up its first ever Mid-American Conference win after shutting out Akron, 1-0, on Thursday afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium.
The Minutewomen improve to 3-3-2 overall, including 1-1 in conference, while the Zips move to 3-3-1 overall and 0-1 in the MAC.
Massachusetts scored at the 1:07 mark of the opening half to take an early 1-0 lead. Kayla Nohasiarisoa crossed the ball right in front of the net with Caroline Dickson running towards it with an Akron defender. The ball deflected off the Akron defender before reaching Dickson, resulting in an own goal.
Throughout the rest of the first and much of the second half, the Minutewomen controlled the pace. The UMass defense held off Akron to maintain to earn the 1-0 win on the day.
Massachusetts outshot Akron, 13-3. The Minutewomen took six shots in the first half to the Zips one, while adding seven more in the second half. UMass also placed four of its 13 shots on goal with Akron putting none of its shots on net.
Nohasiarisoa and Peyton Costello posted three shots apiece, followed by Dickson and Morgan Bellamy with two each. Bellamy's two shots went on goal, as Sarah DeFreitas and Costello also had a shot on goal.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Leah Nisenfeld played the full 90 minutes in net with no saves made and no goals allowed. It marks Nisenfeld's third shutout of the season and first in conference action.
For Akron, Sara Bower saw the most time in goal, accumulating 77 minutes, while allowing a goal and stopping four shots.

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University soccer team took its first Mid-American Conference win of the season against the University at Buffalo with a 1-0 contest Thursday, Sept. 18, at Scicluna Field during Homecoming Week. Junior Olivia Sipsock (Medina, Ohio/Medina) scored the only goal of the match during the 48th minute while Eastern fought off a 17-4 shot margin in favor of UB.
How It Happened
After a scoreless first half, freshman Meredith Werner (Broadview Heights, Ohio/North Royalton) found Sipsock in the far left corner. Sipsock launched a high left-footed shot towards the far post, barely passing over the goalkeeper's glove to give Eastern the lead. Despite being outshot 8-3 in the second half, the Eagles defense held on to their 1-0 lead, stopping any chances of a Buffalo draw.

» Junior Sarah Van Euwen (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) and senior Mary Grimes (Commerce Township, Mich./Walled Lake Central HS) played all 90 minutes in the match. Van Euwen has played 90 minutes for 12 straight matches, extending to the last five games of the 2024-25 season. Grimes' full 90 is her first of the season.
» Sophomore Taylor Maddock (Camlachie, Ontario, St. Patrick's Catholic HS) made her first collegiate start.
» Sipsock's three goals in the last five matches leads the team, two of which are game-winners, including Thursday's match. Sipsock has four career game-winning goals.

OXFORD, Ohio – The Western Michigan women's soccer team battled back from a pair of deficits to defeat Miami (OH) 3-2 on Thursday night. The win was WMU's fifth straight and extended the team's MAC unbeaten streak to 24 games.
Abby Werthman contributed on every Bronco goal, scoring once and adding two assists. Avery Peters and Meredith Vance were the other goal scorers in the match.
FIRST HALF
Both defenses held strong early in the game, as the first shot came just under five minutes into the match. Werthman had her shot blocked out front of the net. Madi Canada would get another shot a few minutes later, but it missed over the net.
Miami's first shot of the game came just under 12 minutes into the first half. That opportunity missed wide of the net. The RedHawks would eventually get on the board, taking a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute.
That lead wouldn't last long, as the Broncos fought right back and scored late in the opening half. Werthman buried a shot into the corner of the net to tie the game. The tally was her team-leading fifth of the season.
SECOND HALF
Miami would push back in front less than two minutes into the second half, but it was all Broncos from there. About 11 minutes into the second half, Avery Peters tallied her second career goal off of an assist from Werthman. That tied the game at 2-2.
Just a few minutes later, Vance fired a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced into the net. Her second career goal put the Brown and Gold in front 3-2 in the 62nd minute.
WMU continued to apply pressure, getting a really strong look from Brianna Langelaan in the 78th minute. Her attempt missed just wide of the net. Down the stretch, the RedHawks would look for the equalizer. Western Michigan would lock down on defense to take home a 3-2 victory.
