BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (4-1-1) defeated Mercyhurst 4-1 in the final game of non-conference action at UB Stadium on Thursday night.
Senior midfielder Ashley Reyes and graduate student defender Frederique St.-Jean both recorded their first goals of the season in the win.
The Bulls were the aggressors early and often as Laiken Kiser drilled a pair of shots off the top crossbar in the opening 20 minutes of play.
UB then got on the board in the 26th minute as Ellie Simmons played a great ball into the box that got knocked off a Lakers' defender for an own goal.
Buffalo would add to their lead in the 34th minute as Marissa Foster played a ball to Maddy Murphy who found Reyes and she drilled a shot from deep into the top left corner of the net to put UB up 2-0.
Later, the Bulls had yet another look on goal as Koby Commandant settled in the box and drilled a shot of her own that clanged off the bar and narrowly missed going in and the Bulls took a two-goal lead at the half.
After Mercyhurst got on the board with a goal in the 52nd minute, the Bulls answered less than 10 minutes later as Simmons took a free kick and played a beautiful ball into the box that found the head of St.-Jean who flicked a shot into the back of the net to put UB up 3-1 and that would be enough to secure the victory as UB got an insurance goal off another own goal from the visitors.
Buffalo dominated the stat sheet, recording season-highs in shots (30) and shots on goal (15) and had a 10-0 advantage in corner kick opportunities, while limiting the Lakers to just one shot on the night.
