CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The App State field hockey team defeated the Queens Royals 6-0 on Tuesday in Charlotte.
The Mountaineers (4-0) dominated the game from start to finish, never trailing against the Royals (0-3).
Sophia Baxter, Bridget Donovan, Hadley Kuzmicky, Baylie Phillips and Henriette Stegen all scored, pushing the Mountaineers' win streak to four to begin the season.
Lise Boekaar was once again a force with the ball, tallying three assists in the game and setting up her teammates in scoring positions.
The Mountaineers started with an offensive explosion, scoring two goals in the opening period. Kuzmicky scored the opening goal for the Mountaineers on a deflection during a penalty corner for her second goal of the season. Phillips followed shortly after by hitting a deflected shot from Baxter into the back of the cage.
It was a scoreless second period for both sides. The Mountaineers couldn't generate any scoring after an offensive opening period.
With the Mountaineers dominating possession in the third and generating multiple penalty corners, Stegen found the back of the cage, also coming off a penalty corner for her first goal of the season. App State ended the period with a 3-0 lead heading into the final period.
The Mountaineers' offense erupted in the fourth period. Donovan scored her first goal of the season assisted by Boekaar, followed by a goal from Baxter to bring the total to five. Kuzmicky scored her second goal of the game late in the period, bringing the final total to six and giving the Mountaineers their fourth win of the season.
The Mountaineers will hit the road to take on No. 2 North Carolina on Friday. The match is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Chapel Hill, N.C.
