LIMA, Peru - SIUE’s Nick Nosler took home the 87-kilogram gold medal for Team USA at the 2025 Pan-American Championships on July 10 in Lima, Peru.

Nosler finished the tournament undefeated at 5-0, besting his score of 0-2 from last year's Pan-Am Championships.

He credits his success to keeping good positioning and maintaining a positive attitude during his matches.

“I felt like I had to win last time, and then I just changed my mindset [this year] to have fun and whatever happens happens, but just [to] wrestle my hardest,” Nosler said. “I felt like last time I was just too serious and wrestled too tight, and it got me.”

Nosler first competed in the 2025 UWW U20 National Championship in Las Vegas and won, qualifying him for the World Team Trials. He won best two out of three at the World Team Trials, further qualifying him for the U.S. Greco-Roman team in the U20 Pan-Am Championships and the U20 World Championships in August.

Nosler won his first match of the Pan-Am Championships 4-0, keeping good position and capitalizing on a mistake made by Peruvian wrestler Kenyiro Gonzales Huaman. He continued his wins with a 10-7 defeat in round two and an 8-0 win in round three.

With a 5-0 win in the semifinals and a score of 5-1, Nosler took home gold. SIUE wrestling head coach Jeremy Spates said Nosler’s perseverance was shown throughout the tournament.

“He learned how to fight through matches, and that was something that Nick struggled with a little bit in high school and early in college — getting tired in matches and just mentally being able to fight through the whole six or seven minutes,” Spates said. “He really did a good job of closing that gap and learning how to wrestle through the whole time.”

Nosler’s coaches said his training over the summer and experience in multiple tournaments are preparing him for the upcoming wrestling season.

“This success that he has had internationally hopefully is going to translate a little more over to the collegiate side now that he can see that he can execute against those high-level wrestlers,” SIUE wrestling assistant coach Jake McKiernan said.
