MAC Baseball Player of the Week
Luke Matthews, Kent State
Junior, Murrieta, Calif. (Vista Murrieta)
Kent State infielder Luke Matthews swung a red-hot bat for the Golden Flashes across all five games. The junior hit .588 on the week with 10 hits, seven runs scored, six RBIs, five stolen bases and tallied a .706 slugging percentage.
In Kent State's two midweek run rule wins Matthews recorded a hit, two stolen bases, and two runs scored in each game.
Over the weekend in Mount Pleasant, Matthews was pivotal in the Flashes weekend sweep over Central Michigan. The infielder recorded eight hits, five RBIs, and three runs scored on the weekend including a pair of three hit games on Friday and Sunday. Matthews delivered on Sunday with three hits and three RBIs to help clinch the sweep.
MAC Baseball Co-Pitcher of the Week
Jack Kelley, Akron
Senior, Temecula, Calif. (Murrieta Mesa)
Jack Kelley helped the Akron Zips claim their first MAC series victory with an 8.0 inning performance in the second game of a doubleheader against Toledo on Sunday. Kelley allowed no runs over his eight innings of work while striking out seven Rockets.
MAC Baseball Co-Pitcher of the Week
Reese Gaber, Western Michigan
Graduate, Stevens Point, Wis. (SPASH)
Reese Gaber tossed the first 6.0 innings of Western Michigan's combined no-hitter on Sunday against The Citadel. An error and a walk helped create some early trouble for the lefty, but he picked up three strikeouts to keep the Bulldogs off of the scoreboard in the opening frame. After that, Gaber erased a few walks with a pair of pickoffs and induced a double play to limit the visitors' scoring chances. Overall, he compiled a season-high seven strikeouts to help WMU to the 17th no-hitter in program history and first since 1997.
