FLY THE FLAG: SIUE Overpowers Duke, Tarleton State

Rider Powers Past Clarion, Columbia Sunday Afternoon
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider wrestling team went a perfect 2-0 on Sunday afternoon, earning dual victories over MAC opponent Clarion and Ivy League foe Columbia in Alumni Gym.

Rider vs. Clarion
No. 22/19 Tyler Klinsky opened the dual at 125 lbs. against Travis Clawson, setting the tone early with an arm-drag go-behind takedown to jump out to a 3-0 lead. A Clawson escape trimmed the score to 3-1 after one, but Klinsky added a late second-period takedown to extend his advantage to 6-1. After cutting Clawson to begin the third, Klinsky secured the decision with another takedown before an escape made it a 9-3 final.

Clarion claimed the bout at 133 lbs., but the Broncs responded with back-to-back bonus-point victories. At 141 lbs., No. 15/13 Elijah Griffin needed just one period, recording a first-period fall with a lat drop.

At 149 lbs., Dylan Layton followed with a dominant 17-2 technical fall, pushing Rider's lead to 14-3.

James Farina continued the momentum at 157 lbs. After a scoreless opening period against Wesley Barnes, Farina scored takedowns in both the second and third periods to earn an 8-2 decision and extend the team score to 17-3.

Clarion picked up a win at 165 lbs., but Rider quickly answered at 174. Enrique Munguia energized the Broncs with a first-period fall over Patrick Cutchember, stretching Rider's lead to 23-6.

At 184 lbs., Giovanni Alejandro battled Adrian Gacek through a scoreless first period. After surrendering an escape, Alejandro responded with a takedown late in the second to take a 3-1 lead. Starting the third on bottom, he earned a quick reversal to seal the 5-1 decision.

No. 21/24 Brock Zurawski closed out the dual in dominant fashion at 197 lbs., posting a 21-3 technical fall in the third period to secure a 31-6 team victory for the Broncs.

Rider vs Columbia
No. 22/19 Tyler Klinsky stayed red-hot at 125 lbs., squaring off once again with No. 32 Sulayman Bah. Klinsky wasted little time, locking up a cradle just 90 seconds into the bout to earn the fall and give Rider an early 6-0 advantage.

Columbia responded with wins at 133 lbs. by technical fall and at 141 lbs. via injury default to move in front, 11-6.

At 149 lbs., Dylan Layton set the pace early against Roman Lermer, scoring two first-period takedowns to take a 6-2 lead. An escape by Lermer in the second trimmed the margin to 6-3, but Layton chose bottom to start the third and quickly earned an escape to secure the 7-3 decision.

The win cut Columbia's lead to 11-9.

James Farina battled Charlie Scanlan at 157 lbs. After a pair of escapes left the match tied 1-1 through regulation, Farina countered a Scanlan shot with a quick go-behind in sudden victory to claim the 4-1 win and put the Broncs back on top, 12-11.

Rider built separation at 165 lbs. as Brendon Abdon delivered one of the dual's biggest moments, throwing a headlock and pinning No. 22 Cesar Alvan in just 26 seconds to extend the Broncs' lead to 18-11.

At 174 lbs., Enrique Munguia used late scrambles to turn defense into offense, earning an 11-6 decision to extend Rider's lead to 21-11.

Columbia picked up a technical fall at 184 lbs. to close the gap to 21-16.

No. 21/24 Brock Zurawski sealed the dual at 197 lbs. against Jake Wehmeyer. A first-period penalty point assessed to Wehmeyer for pulling on Zurawski's headgear proved decisive. With each wrestler recording an escape, the bout ended in a 2-1 decision in favor of Zurawski.

The Lions earned the final bout at heavyweight, but Rider closed out the afternoon with a 24-19 victory.

Quotes and Notes
"I thought we handled adversity really well in the second match. The team came together, competed for each other, and found a way to win instead of wrestling just for themselves. That's a big step forward for our program. It's always nice to get a lopsided win in the Clarion match , and I think that reflects the schedule we've battled through to put ourselves in a position to come out and compete at this level. That was good for our guys to see.

Tyler's preparation is off the charts. He's always working, always watching film, always talking with Nick. When you prepare like that, you can stop overthinking and just react and wrestle, and that's exactly what he's doing. He had a great day.

Columbia is very well coached and has quality kids in its program, so those back-and-forth matches really test you. Going through that kind of battle helps set the table for future opportunities, and that's an important part of what we're building." - Rider Head Coach John Hangey

Chippewas Rally for Two Wins; Take Chippewa Challenge
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Big-time return, big-time debut, big-time performances from the upper weights.

The Central Michigan wrestling team won six of the final seven matches against Cal State Bakersfield and the final seven against American to capture the 5th Annual Chippewa Challenge on Sunday at McGuirk Arena.

The Chippewas opened with a 30-12 win over the Roadrunners and followed with a dramatic 24-15 victory over the Eagles to win the event for the first time since it claimed the crown in the inaugural Challenge in January, 2022.

CMU ran its dual meet win streak to three, improving to 3-1 on the season. The Chippewas go to the Midlands Championships, an individual tournament hosted by Northwestern in Evanston, Ill. on Dec. 29-30.

The unique event pits three teams coached by former Chippewa wrestlers, Ben Bennett (CMU), Luke Smith (Bakersfield) and Jason Borrelli (American). All three wrestled for legendary CMU coach Tom Borrelli (Jason's father), who was honored during an on-mat ceremony as the Chippewas celebrated Alumni Day.

Bennett, in his second season in charge of the Chippewas, saw his team overcame early deficits in both duals as 125-pounder Colton Camacho, wrestling for the first time in a CMU uniform, was injured and unable to continue in his match with Bakersfield's Richard Castro-Sandoval.

Because the Chippewas did not weigh in a backup for Camacho, they were forced to forfeit at 125 against American.

That led to a 9-3 deficit after three matches against Bakersfield, and a 15-0 hole after three matches against American (4-5), which on Thursday won at Michigan State, 20-17, and opened the Challenge with 24-12 win over the Roadrunners.

Jimmy Nugent got it started for the Chippewas against American with a decision victory at 149 to get CMU on the board at 15-3, and then Mason Shrader (157) followed with a major decision win, and Chandler Amaker (165) won on a close decision to make it 15-10.

With momentum building, the Chippewas got a huge 7-2 victory from Tyler Swiderski at 174 and then Wyatt Ferguson gave CMU the lead with a first-period pin at 184 over 26th-ranked Caleb Campos.

Those two results swung momentum completely to the Chippewas.

It was Swiderski's first match in some 11 months after a serios injury ended his 2024-25 season in January, and it was Ferguson's CMU dual meet debut. His pin put the Chippewas on top, 18-15, after a team point was deducted from CMU when the exuberant Ferguson tossed his headgear during the celebration.

Ferguson is a junior who transferred to CMU from Davidson before the 2024-25 season. He wrestled exclusively in open events a year ago, finishing 9-7, and has pushed veteran Adrien Cramer for the starting spot at 184 this season.

Bennett elected to go with Ferguson over Cramer against American after Cramer recorded a pin against Bakersfield. Ferguson got in tight on Campos and took him to the mat with a suplex.

Luke Cochran and Bryan Caves closed it out with decision victories; Caves scored a takedown 12 seconds in to sudden victory.

Nugent also got the Chippewa comeback started against Bakersfield with a decision victory to pull CMU within 9-6, and then Shrader followed with a first-period pin to put the Chippewas in front for good, 12-9.

Amaker followed with a decision victory and, after a loss at 174, the Chippewa lead was a precarious 15-12 with three matches remaining.

Cramer, Cochran, and Caves answered the call as each posted a dominant victory. Cramer won on a pin, Cochran on a technical fall, and Caves on a major decision.

Ohio Defeats Gardner-Webb to Sweep Weekend Duals
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Ohio Bobcats defeated the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs 28-15 on Sunday afternoon, winning their final dual meet of the calendar year. After falling behind 15-3 after the 149 lb. match, the Bobcats roared to life, winning each of the remaining matches to secure a 28-15 victory and go 2-0 in dual meets over the weekend.

Redshirt sophomore Jeremy Olszko was a standout performer for the Bobcats on Sunday, recording a fall against Gardner-Webb's Isaiah Guerrero in the 174 lb. match. Olszko recorded two early takedowns to build a 10-2 lead after two periods, before recording a third-period pin to end the match. Now 4-0 in dual meets on the season, Olszko's win secured a critical six points for the Bobcats, giving them a lead in the match they would not relinquish.

At 125 lbs, freshman Brayden Teunissen started off the match strong for the Bobcats, battling to get his match to overtime before recording a takedown at the end of the first overtime period to secure a 4-1 win by sudden victory over the Runnin' Bulldogs' Matthew Rowland.

At 157 lbs, redshirt junior Derek Raike got the Bobcats back on the board with a 12-3 major decision victory over Gardner Webb's Joseph Giordano. Raike recorded two early takedowns and secured two minutes of riding time in the victory.

At 184 lbs, redshirt senior Sal Perrine followed up Olszko's dominant performance with another strong effort of his own, recording an 11-2 major decision victory over Gardner-Webb's Haydn Daniels that improved his season dual meet record to 4-0.

At 197 lbs, redshirt Senior Zayne Lehman recorded a first-period takedown and second-period reversal, before adding another takedown in the third period to go along with over five minutes of riding time to secure a dominant 10-0 major decision victory. Lehman's victory clinched the match for the Bobcats and improved him to 4-0 in duals this season.

At 285 lbs, sophomore Wyatt Schmitt recorded a takedown in the first and third periods to help him secure an 8-1 decision victory and 2-0 record on the weekend.

The Bobcats will return to the mat in the new year, when they host Bloomsburg on January 2 at the Convocation Center in their first MAC dual of the season. The match will start at 7 P.M. and will be streaming on ESPN+.
