BGSU Improves to 10-0, Best Start in Program History | Results
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — Saturday's tri-dual at Cooper Pool proved historic for Bowling Green women's swimming and diving, as the Falcons earned decisive wins over Findlay and John Carroll to cap the best start to a season in program history.
Bowling Green defeated Findlay, 175-100, and John Carroll, 205-70, improving to 10-0 overall. The mark eclipses the program's previous best start of 8-0, set by the 1970-71 team coached by Jean Campbell.
"It feels great, because it's a testament to what the ladies have been doing day in and day out," head coach
Tanner Barton said. "What we started in our training last year has really taken root, and now we're seeing it in year two."
The Falcons set the tone immediately in the 200-yard medley relay, as the A squad of
Emily McNicol,
Lauren Jablonski,
Bridget Kurtzweil and
Corine Rieskamp touched first in 1:45.55, while Bowling Green's B relay finished third.
Elise Snyder won the three meter (276.15) and the one meter dive (239.62) on the boards.
In the pool, Bowling Green showcased their depth.
Caroline Toledo paced the distance events, winning the 1000 yard freestyle (10:30.63) and the 500 freestyle (5:04.37).
Lourdes Manderfield added a runner-up finish in the 1000 free.
The Falcons recorded multiple podium sweeps, including the 200 freestyle, where
Annie Berrow (1:57.99),
Ashley Fryer (1:58.09) and
Sierra Newton (1:58.16) finished 1-2-3.
Grace Bodrock led another sweep in the 200 butterfly (2:05.34), followed by Alex Johnson and
Morgan Sokol.
Emily McNicol claimed the 100 backstroke in 56.66, while Sokol won the 200 backstroke by nearly five seconds.
Madison Bond added victories in the 200 IM (2:08.68) and a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke.
The Falcons closed the meet with a win in the 200 freestyle relay, as Bodrock, Rieskamp, McNicol and
Samia Becdach combined for a 1:35.80 finish.
Despite a demanding week that included final exams and last weekend's Zippy Invitational, Barton said the team's composure stood out.
"How relaxed the ladies were really stuck out to me," Barton said. "They were comfortable, they were able to swim long, and they weren't exhausted or stressed after a grueling week physically and mentally."
Bowling Green will break from competition before resuming its schedule in January with a road dual at Ohio, as the Falcons turn their focus toward training ahead of the MAC Championships.
"This is one of the most important parts of our season," Barton said. "We're building the foundation now so that when we taper, we're ready to race at our best."
