Men's Tennis Completes 2025 MAC Qualifying Event in Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, MI – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team wrapped up their fall season in style this weekend as the Bulls took part in the MAC Indoor Tournament, hosted by Western Michigan.

The weekend was highlighted by Minjae KimFaiz Nasyam and Michael Malkin who all won their respective singles draws.

In Flight B, Kim defeated Ball State's Andrew Hayward 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and then took down Toledo's Lucas Britez 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the finals where he defeated Western Michigan's Alexander Antonopoulos 6-2, 6-1.

In Flight C, Nasyam defeated Western Michigan's Matej Kajzer in a three-set thriller in his opening match before capturing some more three-set magic with a 7-6, 5-7, 12-10 win over NIU's Iker Dellien to advance to the finals where defeated Western Michigan's Oscar Corwin 6-3, 6-3 in the championship match.

In Flight D, Malkin defeated Toledo's Charlie Snow 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 in the quarterfinals before taking down Western Michigan's Jack Davidson 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the championship match where he defeated Toledo's Cole Cozens 6-3, 7-6.

Nasyam also had a successful doubles campaign as he partnered with Emiliano Jorquera to defeat Toledo's Sergio Alejandro Gonzalez and Lucas Britez 8-4 before falling to Western Michigan's Tim Riedel and Drew Evans 8-5 in the semifinals.

"This has been an exceptional fall for our team," said head coach Lee Nickell. "I am proud of the way we have competed, and we should have good confidence going into the spring. Minjae, Michael, and Faiz should be very proud of their weekend. They did a great job of staying consistent and mentally tough."

Toledo Rockets
KALAMAZOO, Mich. –
The Toledo men's tennis team wrapped up competition at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships on Sunday in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Freshman AJ Sidoti picked up his first wins over conference opponents, earning a straight set victory over Ball State's Anthony Shalakov en route to reaching the F Flight Championship match before falling to UIC's Victor Dorojan.

The conference's 12 best singles players competed in the A Flight. Junior Poonthong Komolpisut and senior Hanamichi Carvajal represented the Rockets in the draw. Komolpisut reached the semifinals, picking up a win over Ball State's Andrei Caragea before dropping to NIU's Nikola Puntaric. Carvajal earned a win over NIU's Lonrezo Leti Messina before falling to Western Michigan's Ashton Adesoro in straight sets.

Matias Olivero and Lucas Britez picked up singles wins in the B Flight. Alejandro Gonzalez earned a straight set win in the C Flight while Cole Cozens tallied a straight set victory in the D flight.

In doubles competition, Komolpisut and Carvajal reached the A Flight semifinals match after taking down WMU's Ashton Adesoro/Jack Davison and Buffalo's Theodore Mitsakos/Clement Mainguy before falling to NIU's Nikola Puntaric/Iker Gaztambide Arrastia.

Northern Illinois Huskies
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Northern Illinois University men's tennis team competed at the MAC Indoor Championships this weekend, hosted by Western Michigan. NIU showed promising results in its final invite of the fall calender. 

The Huskies were led by Nikola Puntaric (Ljubljana, Slovenia/Tulsa), who became the first NIU player to win the Singles Flight A draw at the MAC Indoor Championships. 

On Friday, Puntaric opened the event with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Western Michigan's Chen Hui Ho. In the quarterfinals, the sophomore faced Buffalo's Theodoris Mitsakos and dropped the first set, but bounced back to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Puntaric needed another three sets in the semifinals against Toledo's Poonthong Komolpisut, holding on to win 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. With a trip to the ITA Championships in San Diego on the line, Puntaric won a thriller against Western Michigan's Ashton Adesoro 6-2, 6-7, 6-1 to take home the Flight A crown. 

In doubles, Iker Gaztambide Arrastia (Pamplona, Spain/Jesuitas) and Puntaric reached the final in the A flight, before falling short to Western Michigan's Drew Evans and Tim Riedel 7-5. 

Gaztambide Arrastia and Puntaric defeated Ball State's Andrew and Nolan Hayward in the quarterfinals 8-4 and won in convincing style in the semifinals, downing Toledo's Hanamichi Carvajal and Poonthong Komolpisut 8-1.
