Buffalo Bulls
KALAMAZOO, MI – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team wrapped up their fall season in style this weekend as the Bulls took part in the MAC Indoor Tournament, hosted by Western Michigan.
The weekend was highlighted by
Minjae Kim,
Faiz Nasyam and
Michael Malkin who all won their respective singles draws.
In Flight B, Kim defeated Ball State's Andrew Hayward 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and then took down Toledo's Lucas Britez 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the finals where he defeated Western Michigan's Alexander Antonopoulos 6-2, 6-1.
In Flight C, Nasyam defeated Western Michigan's Matej Kajzer in a three-set thriller in his opening match before capturing some more three-set magic with a 7-6, 5-7, 12-10 win over NIU's Iker Dellien to advance to the finals where defeated Western Michigan's Oscar Corwin 6-3, 6-3 in the championship match.
In Flight D, Malkin defeated Toledo's Charlie Snow 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 in the quarterfinals before taking down Western Michigan's Jack Davidson 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the championship match where he defeated Toledo's Cole Cozens 6-3, 7-6.
Nasyam also had a successful doubles campaign as he partnered with
Emiliano Jorquera to defeat Toledo's Sergio Alejandro Gonzalez and Lucas Britez 8-4 before falling to Western Michigan's Tim Riedel and Drew Evans 8-5 in the semifinals.
"This has been an exceptional fall for our team," said head coach
Lee Nickell. "I am proud of the way we have competed, and we should have good confidence going into the spring. Minjae, Michael, and Faiz should be very proud of their weekend. They did a great job of staying consistent and mentally tough."
UIC Flames
CHICAGO – The UIC men's tennis team traveled to Kalamazoo, Mich., this past weekend to compete in the MAC Indoor Qualifying Event hosted by Western Michigan University. The trip proved successful for the Flames, as
Henrique Sa and
Victor Dorojan advanced to the finals of the B Draw doubles, while
Eldin Nokic reached the semifinals of the A Draw on Saturday.

Western Michigan Broncos
KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Western Michigan men's tennis doubles pairing of
Drew Evans and
Tim Riedel won the MAC Indoor Qualifying Event Doubles A title as the Broncos wrapped up hosting the event on Sunday at West Hills Athletic Club.
The duo earned a three-set tie-breaker win over Northern Illinois' Nikola Puntaric and Iker Gaztambide Arrastia 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 10-3 and now advance to the ITA Conference Masters Tournament for a chance to earn a berth to the NCAA Individual Championships.
This is the second-straight year the Broncos have sent a doubles team to the ITA Conference Masters. Last season Bronco men's tennis alum
Brogan Pierce and current sophomore
Jack Davison competed and advanced to the Round of 16 at the tournament.
Junior
Ashton Adesoro competed in the Singles A Draw title match, but fell to Puntaric in three sets 2-6, 7-6 (7-2), 1-6.
Alex Antonopoulos,
Oscar Corwin and Evans also competed in singles titles matches. Antonopoulos fell to UB's Minjae Kim 2-6, 1-6 in Singles B, Corwin lost to Buffalo's Faiz Nasyam 3-6, 3-6 in Singles C, and Evans fell in the Singles E title match to Ball State's Jeremy Milette 1-6, 6-4, 0-1 (4-10).
Antonopoulos and Corwin teamed up to win the Doubles B title after they defeated UIC's Henrique Sa and Victor Dorojan, 8-4.
Other than Evans and Riedel, the rest of the Broncos are off until WMU begins its dual match season in January.
Toledo Rockets
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Toledo men's tennis team wrapped up competition at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships on Sunday in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Freshman
AJ Sidoti picked up his first wins over conference opponents, earning a straight set victory over Ball State's Anthony Shalakov en route to reaching the F Flight Championship match before falling to UIC's Victor Dorojan.
The conference's 12 best singles players competed in the A Flight. Junior
Poonthong Komolpisut and senior
Hanamichi Carvajal represented the Rockets in the draw. Komolpisut reached the semifinals, picking up a win over Ball State's Andrei Caragea before dropping to NIU's Nikola Puntaric. Carvajal earned a win over NIU's Lonrezo Leti Messina before falling to Western Michigan's Ashton Adesoro in straight sets.
Matias Olivero and
Lucas Britez picked up singles wins in the B Flight.
Alejandro Gonzalez earned a straight set win in the C Flight while
Cole Cozens tallied a straight set victory in the D flight.
In doubles competition, Komolpisut and Carvajal reached the A Flight semifinals match after taking down WMU's Ashton Adesoro/Jack Davison and Buffalo's Theodore Mitsakos/Clement Mainguy before falling to NIU's Nikola Puntaric/Iker Gaztambide Arrastia.

Northern Illinois Huskies
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Northern Illinois University men's tennis team competed at the MAC Indoor Championships this weekend, hosted by Western Michigan. NIU showed promising results in its final invite of the fall calender.
The Huskies were led by
Nikola Puntaric (Ljubljana, Slovenia/Tulsa), who became the first NIU player to win the Singles Flight A draw at the MAC Indoor Championships.
On Friday, Puntaric opened the event with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Western Michigan's Chen Hui Ho. In the quarterfinals, the sophomore faced Buffalo's Theodoris Mitsakos and dropped the first set, but bounced back to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Puntaric needed another three sets in the semifinals against Toledo's Poonthong Komolpisut, holding on to win 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. With a trip to the ITA Championships in San Diego on the line, Puntaric won a thriller against Western Michigan's Ashton Adesoro 6-2, 6-7, 6-1 to take home the Flight A crown.
In doubles,
Iker Gaztambide Arrastia (Pamplona, Spain/Jesuitas) and Puntaric reached the final in the A flight, before falling short to Western Michigan's Drew Evans and Tim Riedel 7-5.
Gaztambide Arrastia and Puntaric defeated Ball State's Andrew and Nolan Hayward in the quarterfinals 8-4 and won in convincing style in the semifinals, downing Toledo's Hanamichi Carvajal and Poonthong Komolpisut 8-1.
Ball State Cardinals
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Ball State men's tennis team competed in the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships this past weekend which saw true freshman
Jeremy Milette earn the singles title of the Flight E draw.
Milette, opened play with a 4-6, 6-4, 10-3, take down of Illinois Chicago's Henrique Sa. Milette would then advance to the finals after defeating host Western Michigan's Dimitri Moriarty, 3-6, 7-5, 10-7.
In the championship match, Milette faced the Broncos' Drew Evans. Milette would take the first frame 6-1 from Evans before dropping the second set 4-6. Milette fought back to take the two-set tiebreaker by a score of 10-4 to claim the victory.
Both
Andrei Caragea and
Anthony Shalakov also advanced to the semifinal rounds of their respective flights.
The brotherly duo of Nolan and Andrew Hayward highlighted doubles play for the Cardinals after beating UIC's Artem Alekseychuk and Eldin Nokic by an 8-5 decision in the A Draw.
Ball State also found success in some of the consolation matches which saw Caragea earn two victories to end the weekend with three singles wins.
The Cardinals will wrap up fall action when it hosts the Ball State Invite which begins Nov. 7 through Nov. 9 at the Ball State Indoor Tennis Facility.
