Central Michigan
ATHENS, Ohio – The Central Michigan wrestling team won six matches on Sunday in defeating Ohio, 21-12, in a Mid-American Conference dual at the Bobcats' Convocation Center.
It was the Chippewas' third consecutive MAC dual victory as they improved to 4-8, 3-1 MAC. CMU entertains Kent State on Sunday, Feb. 5 (2 p.m.) in a MAC dual. Ohio is 3-7, 2-2.
The Chippewas bounced back after dropping all three duals last weekend in the Chippewa Challenge at Campbell.
"After last weekend we needed to rebound the right way and we did that, so that was good," CMU coach
Tom Borrelli said.
The Chippewas got five decision victories and another by forfeit.
CMU's
Vince Perez (133 pounds),
Johnny Lovett (149),
Tracy Hubbard (165),
Alex Cramer (174) and
Bryan Caves (285) each won by decision.
Corbyn Munson (157) won by forfeit. He has won 10 consecutive bouts and is 22-8 on the season including 4-0 in MAC duals.
The highlight wins for CMU came from Lovett at 149 and from Hubbard at 165.
Lovett got a takedown and a two-point near fall in posting a 4-0 win over Alec Hagan, a past NCAA Championships qualifier who is ranked 31
st nationally by Intermat. Hagan is ranked second in the MAC, while Lovett is seventh.
Hubbard held on for a 5-4 victory over Jordan Slivka at 165. Slivka was an NCAA Championships qualifier last season, when he placed fourth in the MAC Championships, and was ranked nationally earlier this season. Slivka is ranked third in the MAC; Hubbard is eighth.
It was Hubbard's third consecutive victory and his fifth in his last six matches.
"Both of those were big wins for us," Borrelli said, adding that Hubbard took a 5-1 lead into the third period. "(Hubbard) pretty much dominated the match other than the third period. He's gaining confidence."
Cramer, the reigning MAC Wrestler of the Week, ran his win streak and improved to 22-8 on the season with a 9-2 victory over Garrett Thompson. He broke into the Intermat national rankings this week at No. 33 and is now 4-0 in MAC duals.
Caves clinched the dual with a 2-0 victory at 285, improving to 17-11 on the year and 3-1 in MAC duals. The Chippewas held an 18-12 lead when Caves took the mat and, had he been pinned, the meet would have been tied 18-18 and Ohio could have won on tie-breaker criteria.
As it was, Caves, a redshirt freshman, wrestled a smart match, getting an escape to open the second period and then riding his opponent throughout the third for the all-important riding-time point. He improved to 3-1 in MAC duals and to 17-11 on the season.
Caves, Borrelli said, "is really doing some good things for us as a redshirt freshmen. He goes out there and wrestles real smart matches when there's a little bit of pressure on him and he figures out how to win. That's a tough situation to be in and he's pulled through for us a number of times."
Clarion
KENT, Ohio --- The Golden Eagle wrestling team ripped off their seventh straight dual win on Sunday, improving to 7-1 in Mid-American Conference (MAC) action and 5-2 in road matches with a 29-6 effort over Kent State.
Clarion dominated the bouts contested on Sunday, winning eight out of 10 matches, including what could be considered an upset in the very first bout of the day.
Joey Fischerdefeated the Golden Flashes' Jake Ferri by 3-1 decision in the 125-point bout, taking down the nationally-ranked challenger in the first period to make the difference. Ferri entered the weekend ranked 18
th in the NCAA coaches' poll at 125 pounds but Fischer scratched out the win to put his team on top early in the day.
The Golden Eagles never relinquished that lead, either, as
Mason Prinkey earned his first dual victory of the season and his first career MAC dual match. He put up a flurry of points against Jacob Houpt to record a 10-9 decision, and
Seth Koleno kept the wave going with a 12-1 major decision over Landen Hacker at 141 pounds.
Kent State did muster a response in the middle weights, winning decisions at 149 and 157 pounds to cut the Golden Eagles' lead to 10-6. Any thoughts of a comeback were quickly dashed in the next two bouts, though, as
Cam Pine and
John Worthing combined for 10 team points to re-establish control. Pine worked Colby Dalon for a 12-1 major decision at 165 pounds, and Worthing made quick work of Ashton Breen for a fall at 174. In the latter bout, Worthing took Breen down just 10 seconds into the match and proceeded to go to work, eventually rolling Breen to his shoulders for the pin.
The final three matches of the day were workmanlike decisions for the Golden Eagles' heaviest weights, starting with a 6-0 decision for 30
th-ranked
Will Feldkamp over Mike Caniglia. That officially clinched the team win for Clarion, but
Ty Bagoly followed up with a dominant 5-1 decision over Blake Schaffer.
