FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason wrestling garnered three in-state honors announced by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID). Head Coach
Frank Beasley has been named the
VaSID Coach of the Year, while freshman standout
James Blackmanwas selected as
Rookie of the Year and All-State First Team. Additionally, sophomore
DJ McGee earned a spot on the
VaSID All-State First Team.
Beasley receives the top coaching honor after leading the Patriots to one of the most successful seasons in recent history. Under his leadership, the Patriots posted its highest win total in over a decade and saw three wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Championships.
In its sixth season in the MAC, George Mason finished with a 12-6 record, its most wins in the conference (6-2) in program history and the most wins in a season since the 2007-08 season when the Patriots finished with a 13-5 record.
The Patriots matched last year's number of qualifiers with three, including sophomore
DJ McGee who returned to the championship. McGee earned a berth as MAC Champion, while
Malachi DuVall and
Kaden Cassidy qualified as one of the MAC allocations with third place finishes.
Blackman's impact was immediate compiling a 18-11 season record. Blackman earned a fourth-place finish in his first MAC Championship. The rookie earned back-to-back falls against J. Christense (NIU) and #4 seed Chapman from Clarion before dropping a match in the semifinals.
McGee continued to build on his impressive collegiate career, earning First Team All-State honors after a season capped by a second straight trip to the NCAA Championship. The MAC Champion finished with a 23-7 overall record at 157 pounds and finished top 16 in the country with a 2-2 record in the 2025 NCAA Championship, besting his 1-2 record in 2024 tournament.
The Stafford, Va. native won the team's Dan Wotring Most Outstanding Wrestler Award for the second consecutive season. He was crowned champion at the Citadel Invitational to begin the season.
VaSID names 44 all-state teams in 23 sports each year, as well as an Academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University and College Divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a university or conference office in the state of Virginia.
