MAC Announces 2020 Women's Basketball Postseason Awards

CLEVELAND, Ohio – On Tuesday the Mid-American Conference announced the Player, Coach and Freshman of the Year, as voted by the head coaches, sports information directors and media members of the Mid-American Conference.
 
The conference office also released the 2019-20 All-MAC Teams, All-Freshman Team, All-Defensive Team, Defensive Player of the Year and Sixth Player of the Year awards as voted by the league’s 12 head coaches.
 
Central Michigan guard Micaela Kelly received top honors being named the 2020 MAC Player of the Year and earning a spot on the All-MAC First Team and All-Defensive Team. The junior from Detroit, Michigan put together one of the best scoring seasons in CMU women’s program history, posting a 21.5 ppg average which ranks 4thin the NCAA and first overall in the MAC. 
 
Central Michigan University First Year Head Coach Heather Oesterle was named the 2020 MAC Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year. Oesterle led the Chippewas to a 23-6 record and finished 16-2 in the MAC, winning its fourth-consecutive overall league title and its fifth-straight MAC West crown. Oesterle broke the MAC record this season for most conference wins for a first year head coach with 16, a record previously held by former Toledo Head Coach Mark Ehlen. 
 
Buffalo guard Dyaisha Fair is the recipient of the 2020 MAC Freshman of the Year Award. The Rochester, NY native is currently tied for fifth in the country in scoring (21.3) and also ranks 10th in total points (596). She has scored in double figures 26 times this season, and has led the Bulls in scoring in 21 of their 28 games. Fair was also named the MAC East Division Player of the Week five times this season, the most of any East Division Player. 

After receiving Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2019, Ohio’s Cierra (Cece) Hooks doubled up on the award in 2020 after another dominate season on the defensive end. Her junior stint at Ohio also earned her a spot on the All-MAC First Team and All-Defensive Team. The Dayton, Ohio native is the MAC’s leader in steals with 105 this season, and her 3.8 steals per game ranks 5thin the nation. Hooks became the All-Time steals leader at Ohio this season in their Nov. 30thgame against Butler.
 
Joining Kelly and Hooks on the All-MAC First Team is Ohio’s Erica Johnson, Ball State’s Oshlynn Brown, and Northern Illinois’ Courtney Woods. 
 
Freshman Dyaisha Fair and Molly Davis were all tabbed for Second Team All-MAC accolades, along with Eastern Michigan’s Areanna Combs, Western Michigan’s Breanna Mobley, and Miami’s Lauren Dickerson. 
 
Receiving third-team honors is Akron’s Haliegh Reinoehl, Central Michigan’s Kyra Bussell, Buffalo’s Theresa Onwuka, Miami’s Savannah Kluesner, and Western Michigan’s Jordan Walker. 
 
Ohio’s Armani Burke, Bowling Green’s Angela Perry, Akron’s Jordyn Dawson and the Kent State duo of Megan Carter and Katie Shumate all were selected for honorable mention recognition.
 
Buffalo’s Theresa Onwuka, Eastern Michigan’s Areanna Combs, and Kent State’s Lindsey Thall accompany Kelly and Hooks on the MAC’s All-Defensive Team.
 
2ndTeam All-MAC selections Dyaisha Fair and Molly Davis along with Ball State’s Sydney Freeman, Kent State’s Katie Shumate, and Nila Blackford , as well as Miami’s Peyton Scott highlight the All-Freshman Team to round out the 2019-20 postseason award lists.
