MAC Announces Men's Tennis Singles Player and Doubles Team of the Week


MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE ANNOUNCES MEN’S TENNIS PLAYER AND DOUBLES TEAM OF THE WEEK
 
MAC Men’s Tennis Singles Player of the Week
Jannik Opitz, Western Michigan – Senior, Hildescheim, Germany (Josephinum Hildesheim)
Western Michigan senior Jannik Opitz at No. 1 singles went 3-0 for the Broncos last week, with all three coming in straight sets. On Tuesday, he defeated Yannic Mader of Ferris State (6-4, 6-3). Against Youngstown State on Friday, he secured the victory for his team with a win over 2019 All-Horizon League selection Vasilis Vardakis (7-6, 6-3). On that same day, he finished his perfect week by prevailing over Jakov Suler of Chicago State (7-5, 7-5). Jannik improved to 9-4 in singles for the 2020 dual season with his successful week. 
 
Additional Men’s Singles Nominees:
Vilhelm Fridell, Buffalo – Senior, Gothenburg, Sweden (Procivitas Privata Gymnasium)
Buffalo senior Vilhelm Fridell at No. 2 singles came away with Buffalo’s lone singles victory against No. 18 Florida State as he dropped just two games in a win. Fridell defeated Loris Pourroy, 6-1, 6-1. On Sunday, Fridell moved up to first singles where he dropped a tough match against Evzen Holis of Tennessee Tech.
 
Krzysztof Wetoszka, Toledo – Freshman, Szczecin, Poland (Saint Maksymilian Maria Kolbe Catholic)
Toledo freshman Krzysztof Wetoszka at No. 1 and No. 2 singles went 2-0 over the weekend, helping the Rockets sweep Saint Francis, 7-0, and defeat Wayne State 5-2. In Friday's match against Saint Francis, Wetoszka fought Sebastian Pinos on the No. 1 court. After dropping the first set 6-7(4), Wetozska swept the second, 6-0, and took the third 10-5. On Sunday, Wetoszka earned the Rockets’ first point in singles play, defeating Pierre Renaudie in two sets (6-2, 6-3) on the No. 2 court. 
 
 
MAC Men’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
Matthew Johnson, Buffalo – Junior, Constantia, Cape Town, South Africa (Rondebosch Boys High School)
Valdemar Holm, Buffalo – Junior, Malmo, Sweden (Idrottsgymnasium)

 
Buffalo junior’s Matthew Johnson and Valdemar at No. 2 doubles had some successful results over impressive competition this past weekend.  The duo won 6-4 over Florida State’s Bryn Nahrung and Marcus Walters.  The Seminoles entered the match at the No. 18 team in the country.  On Sunday, the pair led Tennessee Tech 5-4 when the doubles point was clinched, leaving the match unfinished.

Danilo Vukotic, Toledo – Senior, Nis, Serbia (Gymnasium Svetozar Markovic)
Filip Zupancic, Toledo – Junior, Ljubljana, Slovenia (Gimnazija Siska)

 
Toledo senior Danilo Vukotic and junior Filip Zupancic at No. 1 doubles went undefeated last weekend in a 7-0 sweep of Saint Francis and 5-2 win over Wayne State. Vukotic/Zupancic swept the Red Flash's Jordi Garcia/Derek Roehner, 6-0 on Friday to clinch the doubles point. On Sunday, Vukotic/Zupancic earned the Rockets' sole win on the doubles court, defeating Wayne State's Dom Spicer/David Solar, 6-3.

Peter Kuszynski, Western Michigan – Sophomore, Markham, Ontario (St. Brother Andre Catholic)

 
Western Michigan senior Jannik Opitz and Peter Kuszynski at No. 1 doubles teamed up twice last week, going 2-0 for the Broncos. On Tuesday against Ferris State, they swept Mathis Guerre and Yannic Mader 6-0. On Friday, they defeated Vasilis Vardakis and Joao Garretto of Youngstown State by a 6-4 score to clinch the doubles point. The duo improved to 3-1 as a team during the dual season.
