Cheek Places Seventh At Southern Scuffle

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Redshirt senior Evan Cheek placed at the prestigious Southern Scuffle, presented by Compound Sportswear, as he competed on the second and final day of the event Thursday inside Chattanooga's McKenzie Arena. Cheek placed seventh at 141 pounds, the second time placing at this event in his career as he also did so in 2018.  Full Story...

Cheek Advances To Day Two Of Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Redshirt senior Evan Cheek of the Cleveland State wrestling team advanced to the second day of the Southern Scuffle, presented by Compound Sportswear, as the opening day of the competition took place Wednesday at Chattanooga's McKenzie Arena. Cheek earned the sixth seed in the event at 141 pounds and drew a bye in the opening round. He then dispatched of his opponent from Drexel by a 15-1 margin, twice earning four-point near falls. Cheek then took down a conference foe in his next bout, posting takedowns early and late in the match to claim a 5-2 victory.  Full Story...

George Mason:
DiBlasi Earns Third at Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – A couple of Mason seniors placed and the Patriots finished 14 out of 27 teams at the Southern Scuffle, hosted by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Colston DiBlasi, pre-seeded seventh at the tournament, placed third at 149 pounds and Alex Madrigalplaced fifth at 141 pounds. DiBlasi won four straight matches on Wednesday, including a win by fall against No. 3 seed Russell Rohifinger from Cal State Bakersfield, before dropping the semifinal match in a close, 3-1, decision to eventual champion Jaden Abas. After a medical forfeit by Stanford's R. Van der Merwe, DiBlasi won by fall over App State's Jonathan Milner in the 3rd/4th place match. He won the Gorarrian Award,  presented to the wrestle with the most pins in the shortest amount of time. DiBlasi Advances to Semifinals at Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Redshirt senior Colston DiBlasi advanced to the semifinals at the Southern Scuffle, hosted by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Patriots Alex Madrigal (141) and sophomore Kolby Ho (157) made it to the quarterfinals of the tournament held at McKenzie Arena. Seeded seventh, DiBlasi (19-7, 6-2) won four matches today at 141 to advance to the semifinal match at Noon tomorrow against Stanford's Jaden Abas . In the quarterfinals, he won by fall against No. 3 seed Russell Rohifinger from Cal State Bakersfield. Lock Haven:
Werner (2nd), Shoop (4th) & Manley (5th) place at Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Luke Werner (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) was second, Kyle Shoop (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) placed fourth and Cole Manley (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) finished fifth, as the trio of placewinners led the way for the Lock Haven University wrestling team at the two-day (Jan. 1-2) 2020 Southern Scuffle, one of the premier in-season college wrestling tournaments.  Werner made an exciting two-day run, before finishing second overall at 125 pounds with a 4-1 record. Shoop, nationally-ranked at 141, placed fourth in a deep bracket. Werner, Shoop punch tickets to Southern Scuffle Semifinals

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Luke Werner (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and Kyle Shoop (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) of the Lock Haven University wrestling team led the way on Day 1 of the 2020 Southern Scuffle today (Jan. 1) as each booked a spot in tomorrow's semifinals.  It marks the second straight year where both Werner (125) and Shoop (141) earned a spot in the Southern Scuffle semifinals.  Werner was 3-0 today at 125 pounds and Shoop went 4-0 at 141.  Full Story...

Old Dominion:
McGee Places Sixth at Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Old Dominion junior Michael McGee took down three wrestlers, including two ranked wrestlers to place sixth at 125 pounds at the Southern Scuffle, presented by Compound Sportswear. The two-day event began on January 1, and McGee, who was wrestling unattached and hasn't competed at all this season after coming into the season ranked seventh in four national polls, certainly didn't look rusty. Entering the competition, McGee was the seven-seed, and he started his day defeating Corey Cabanban of Iowa State, 10-5 in a win by decision.  McGee followed that performance with an 8-7 win by decision over No. 24 Fabian Gutierrez, representing the host school of Chattanooga, to advance to the quarterfinals in the 125-pound bracket.  Full Story...

Rider:
Dellavecchia, Laird and Sherry Place at Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, TN – Rider University wrestlers Jesse Dellavecchia (Great River, NY/East Islip [Binghamton]), Ethan Laird(Waterford, PA/General McLane) and Dean Sherry (Brick, NJ/Brick Township) all placed at the Southern Scuffle, completed Thursday at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Dellavecchia finished second at 157, Laird earned third at 197 and Sherry took sixth at 174. As a team, the Broncs finished eighth of 34 teams with 72.5 points.  Dellavecchia advanced to the finals, defeating North Dakota State's Luke Weber, 8-2, in the semifinals. He then fell to North Carolina State's Hayden Hidley, 10-0, in the championship bout to take second.  Full Story...

Three Wrestlers Advance to Semifinals at Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, TN – Jesse Dellavecchia, Ethan Laird and Dean Sherry all advanced to Thursday's semifinals as the Rider University wrestling team competed at prestigious Southern Scuffle on Wednesday. Dellavecchia's march to the semifinals at 157 included a tech fall over West Virginia's Hunter Jones and major decisions over Duke's Wyatt Pfau and Rutgers' Michael Vanbrill. He'll face North Dakota State's Luke Weber in tomorrow's semifinals, while top-seeded Hayden Hidlay of NC State and Oklahoma State's Wyatt Sheets will compete in the other semifinal. Full Story...
