Men's Tennis Continues Fall Competition

Buffalo Bulls
PRINCETON, NJ – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team competed at the Farnsworth Invitational, hosted by Princeton, this weekend.

After a tough start to the weekend on Friday, the Bulls responded with some strong play on Saturday as Minjae Kim and Onder Balci picked up a pair of wins, defeating Dartmouth's Dillon Beckles and Calvin Wang 8-4 before taking down the Big Green pairing of Denny Bao and Puthi Pantaratorn 8-5. Miko Lapalme and Mathis Salvestre defeated Princeton's Sawyer Severance and Milan Markovits 8-3. Kim also picked up a win in singles action, defeating Purdue's Juan David Velasquez 7-5, 4-6, 6-1.

On Sunday, Salvestre and Lapalme defeated Purdue's Liam Channon and Lorenzo Balducci 8-5. The Bulls then picked up a trio of singles victories as Lapalme defeated Dartmouth's Leo Pade 6-1, 6-4, Kim battled to a hard-fought three-set victory over Drexel's Will Burridge 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (6), and Balci earned a three-set victory of his own with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over Drexel's Josue Guzman.


Ball State Cardinals
KALAMAZOO, Mich.
- The Ball State men's tennis team competed at the WMU/Vredevelt Invitational this weekend, which began Friday morning and ended Saturday afternoon at Sorenson Courts. The Cardinals faced competitors from Butler, DePaul, Gonzaga, Marquette, along with host Western Michigan.

Although the Cardinals struggled on the opening day of the tournament, there were a lot of matches where the outcome could have gone either way. In singles, Jeremy Milette tallied a straight-sets singles victory on Friday over host Western Michigan's Alex Antonopoulos, 6-2, 6-3 and then garnered another singles victory after defeating Butler's Nicholas Balthazor, 6-1, 6-2. Anthony Shalakov earned a 6-3, 6-4 win versus the Bulldogs Arnesh Singh, 6-3, 6-4, while Jenson Bicanic rounded out the singles wins on opening day defeating Gonzaga's James Hutchinson, 6-3, 6-4. Nolan Hayward paired up with teammate Zach Kimelman to capture a 6-4 defeat against DePaul's twosome of Bernardo Vialle and Augusto Pardo.

Saturday saw Drew Hayward and Shalakov tally a 7-6 (2) doubles win against Butler's duo of Nicholas Shirley and Alex Borbiu. Milette alongside Maksym Ivashko beat Marquette's Clayton Anderson and Kristian Blagoev, 6-3, and Nolan Hayward ended the final day winning a two-set match by a score of 6-2 in both sets to Butler's Alex Borbiu.


Western Michigan Broncos
KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan men's tennis team wrapped up hosting the annual WMU/Vredevelt Invitational over the weekend. 

The Broncos' Oscar Corwin, Chen Hui Ho and Dominik Vonbank all earned spots on the All-Tournament Team after each going 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles. Corwin was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. 

FRIDAY
The team's played a round of doubles to open the tournament on Friday. The team of Ho and Jack Davison picked up a 7-6 (7-4) win over Butler's Borbiu and Shirley. Alex Antonopolous and Philip Polkemba picked up a win against Marquette's Anderson and Perrill. Drew Evans and Jose Perez earned a 6-2 win over Hayward and Shalakov from Ball State, while Corwin and Vonbank teamed up for a 6-1 win over Gonzaga's duo of Mitchell and Dunop. Also picking up a win was Drew Moriarty and Ahn Hoang Pham over BSU's Milette and Ivashko. 

In singles action, Ho, Pham, Vobank, Corwin, and Davison each went 2-0 on the day. Evans also picked up a single win for the Broncos.

SATURDAY
In Saturday's competition, the teams played two rounds of doubles. Corwin and Vobank picked up wins over teams from Butler and Gonzaga. Pham and Moriarty finished the weekend 3-0 as a team, adding wins over Hayward and Kimelman from Ball State (6-3) and Balthazor and Worobe from BU (6-3). Ho and Davidson also picked up two wins after defeating Pawirodirjo and Reeves from the Zags (6-4) and Hayward and Kimelman from the Cardinals. 

Ho, Corwin and Vonbank all finished their perfect weekends with wins. Evans, Moriarty, Polkemba and Perez also picked up singles wins. 


Omaha Mavericks
OMAHA, Neb. -
 Omaha Men's Tennis wrapped up the weekend at the Creighton Invite. 
Taylor, a junior from Clive, Iowa, opened the weekend with a 6-3, 7-6 (5) win over Creighton's Jack McMahon. He later beat Washburn's Gael Mourmant 6-0, 6-1 and Northwest Missouri State's Carlos Doria 6-1, 6-3. 

The doubles team of senior Pavan Uppu and junior Eloi Roux also went 3-0 with a 6-3 win over Washburn's Benjamin Fock and Nicolas Hurtado. The duo also picked up a 6-3 win over Creighton's Mathis Dahler and Rocky McKenzie. Their final victory was also by a margin of 6-3, but against Northwest Missouri State's Bernardo Henriques and Dominik Wijintjes. 

The Mavs went 8-4 in singles and 4-2 in doubles to go 12-6 overall. 


Toledo Rockets 
TOLEDO –
The Toledo men's tennis team saw its first fall action of the season at the Everybody vs. Cancer Invitational in Toledo, Ohio. Senior Poonthong Komolpisut led the squad with an undefeated singles record and teamed up with David Perret to reach the semifinals in the doubles draw.

Komolpisut posted a 3-0 singles record on the weekend, defeating Case Western's Rowan Matorin 6-4, 4-1, Grand Valley State's Emile Dupanloup 7-5, 6-4, and Wayne State's George Day 6-4, 6-4. Komolpisut went 2-1 in doubles play to reach the semifinals before falling to George Day and Sam Knowles, 8-6.

Junior Daniel Blinov and Perret both made their Toledo debuts over the weekend. Perret opened the tournament with a straight-set win over Dupanloup, 7-5, 6-2.

Sophomores Pannawat Suttisomboon and AJ Sidoti picked up their first wins of the season in singles play. Suttisomboon posted straight set wins over Jai Dutta from IU Indy and Benjamin Hall from Wayne State before winning in a tiebreaker over CWRU's Luke Saylor, 3-6, 6-4, 10-3. Sidoti tallied a 6-0, 6-3 win over IU Indy's Pumiphat Sukkho and a 2-6, 6-1, 10-6 win over Xander Jhaveri from CWRU.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Poonthong Komolpisut, David Perret and Pannawat Suttisomboon represented the Toledo men's tennis team at the ITF World Tour M15 in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Perret led the squad, earning a straight-set 7-6 (3), 6-3 win over Pierce Shaya, his first ITF singles victory of the season. He then advanced to the next round of qualifying singles, where he fell to Jelani Sarr, 6-4, 6-1.

In doubles competition, Komolpisut and Suttisomboon combined to take on Gustavo Albieri and Nicholas Heng in the main draw. The Rockets duo fell 6-2, 6-3.
