MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State soccer team got a goal early in the second half from Annika Klauss on its way to a 1-0 win over Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon at the Briner Sports Complex.
Klauss made a sliding kick off an assist by Mary Jane Keller and found the back of the net in the 49th minute for what proved to be the only goal of the afternoon. The score from Klauss was her first of the season, while Keller was credited with the first assist of her collegiate career.
Ball State (2-2-1) improved to 2-0 at home with the winning decision. The soccer program improved to 1-1 against Cincinnati in series history with the first match taking place in 2021.
Goalkeeper Kate Pallante made three saves in keeping the clean sheet, as she faced 10 total shots from the visiting Bearcats (1-2-1). Ball State took three shots on the afternoon with two of them being on goal.
Keller joined Klauss as Cardinals placing a shot on target during the match, and Delaney Ahearn also took a shot.
Audrey Goodyear, Ainsley Schaufele, Jordyn Klaasen and Pallante went the full 90 minutes for the hosts.
Cincinnati took more shots (10-3) on the afternoon and generated more corner kicks (6-2) but was whistled for more fouls (10-4).

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's soccer team pushed its home unbeaten streak to 22 games with a 2-0 victory over Valparaiso on Sunday afternoon at the WMU Soccer Complex. The win pushed the Brown and Gold's record to 2-0-2 on the season.
Sophia Bowman and Tessa Fagerson provided the goals for the Broncos, while Kate Sheridan picked up her first win of the season in net.
FIRST HALF
WMU came out aggressive, getting an early chance from Camryn Huhn on the right side of the goal. Her shot was handled by the Valpo keeper. A little bit later, Olivia Smith had a look blocked out front off of a corner kick.
Western Michigan's persistence would eventually pay off, as Fagerson played a great ball into the box that Bowman was able to push into the net for a goal. The tally was her second of the season and put the Broncos in front 1-0 in the 23rd minute.
As the game progressed, the Brown and Gold continued to apply pressure. Reese Lynn and Meredith Vance each had quality chances down the stretch, but the score would remain 1-0 in favor of the home team as the game hit halftime.
SECOND HALF
Western Michigan didn't slow down in the second 45 minutes, with Bowman firing a ball at the net in the 52nd minute. The Valpo goaltender was in position to make the stop. Kailah Newcomb then tried her luck and had a shot saved in the 55th minute.
Later, Kaiya Stewart nearly added to the lead. However, her point-blank shot was blocked by a Beacons defender in the 62nd minute. Valparaiso found some offense in the later stages of the second half, hitting the crossbar in the 72nd minute. Sheridan was then there to make a stop for the Broncos in the 73rd minute.
With time winding down, the Broncos would put the nail in the coffin. Smith stole the ball at midfield and played a nice through ball to Fagerson. She did the rest and pushed the lead to 2-0 in favor of the Brown and Gold.
Valpo threatened in the closing minutes, but Sheridan and the WMU defense were there to slam the door on a 2-0 victory
Ohio 6, Mercyhurst 0

ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio soccer team (2-1-0, 0-0-0 MAC) defeated Mercyhurst (1-3-0, 0-0-0 NEC) 6-0 on Sunday (Aug. 30) as the Bobcats celebrated Senior Day.
Overall, Ohio scored six goals on 19 shots, with 10 on goal, and took seven corner kicks. Meanwhile, Mercyhurst did not score, recorded nine shots, with four on goal and four corner kicks.
Ohio was led by seniors Jaimason Brooker (Powell, Ohio) and Melia Peer (Pittsburgh, Pa.) as they each scored one goal on three shots. Redshirt senior Ella Deevers (Streetsboro, Ohio) scored her first of the season, with two shots on goal. Junior Lillian Weller (Xenia, Ohio) also scored her first goal of the season and added two shots on goal in 40 minutes played. Sophomore Kiley Bruce (Lebanon, Ohio) scored her first career goal with the Bobcats, and freshman Camille Francis (Perrysburg, Ohio) notched her second goal of the season.
In goal, sophomore Bella Wyatt (Noblesville, Ind.) got the start, making three saves in 45 minutes played. Freshman Ayla Rammel (Englewood, Ohio) started the second half, making one save on three shots.
The Bobcats wasted no time getting on the board, seniors Kate Robinson (Madison Heights, Mich.) and Anna Burchett (Prestonburg, Ky.) set up Deevers with the pass through the box for the 1-0 lead in the sixth minute.
Ohio's offense continued pressing Mercyhurst's backline, then junior Iro Fakinou (Athens, Greece) collected the loose ball to find Francis to extend the Bobcat advantage, 2-0. Ohio earned a corner kick as the first half was ending, freshman Kendal Erbach (Lebanon, Ohio) took the corner and found Weller back post to head the ball past the goalkeeper for the 3-0 lead in the 44th minute heading into halftime.
At the half, Ohio scored three goals on nine shots with four on goal, while taking three corners. Mercyhurst recorded no goals with six shots, three on goal, and took three corners.
The Bobcats picked up in the second half where they left off in the first with continuous pressure on the Lakers' back line. After a missed penalty kick, Ohio forced a turnover and Peer found the back of the net in the 54th minute to set the score, 4-0.
Mercyhurst was awarded a free kick late in the 61st minute, but Ohio got the ball in transition and Brooker struck the ball by the goalkeeper for the Bobcats' fifth of the match.
In the 84th minute, sophomore Noelle Miriello (New Albany, Ohio) scorched past the defense and crossed the ball in to find Bruce open in front of the net to tally on another goal.
