ATHENS, Ohio – Led by two goals from freshman Meaghan Cochrane, the Ohio soccer team opened the 2026 season on Wednesday afternoon (Aug. 12), defeating UIC, 2-1, at Chessa Field. With the win, head coach Aaron Rodgers earned his 100th career win.
Overall, Ohio scored two goals on 32 shots, with 13 on goal, and took 10 corner kicks. Meanwhile, UIC scored one goal on 13 shots, with seven on goal and one corner kick.
Ohio was led by Cochrane (Markham, Ontario, Canada), who scored two goals on three shots, with three on goal. Senior Jaimason Brooker (Powell, Ohio) added six shots with three on goal, while senior Melia Peer (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had five attempts with two on goal. Junior Iro Fakinou (Athens, Greece) recorded four shots, with two on goal, while senior Kate Robinson (Madison Heights, Mich.) added three shots with one on goal.
In goal, freshman Ayla Rammel (Englewood, Ohio) got the start, allowing one goal and making six saves for her first career win.
The Bobcats recorded the first offensive attempts of the match early on, with Peer recording back-to-back shots in the third minute. Minutes later, Ohio recorded their best attempt of the game in the eighth minute when junior Lillian Weller (Xenia, Ohio) and Peer recorded back-to-back shots that bounced off the post, just missing crossing the line, keeping the score at 0-0.
UIC got their first shot of the game in the ninth minute, on a ball that went just wide of the net. The Ohio offense kept up the pressure on the UIC defense, recording multiple attempts, however the defense was able to keep the Bobcats off the board.
UIC got on the board first in the 33rd minute, with the Flames taking a 1-0 and a ball that just crossed into the top left corner.
Ohio didn't let up, and five minutes later, Cochrane recorded the equalizer on a free kick that made it into the top left corner of the net, tying the game at 1-1. After the goal, both teams continued to push offensively, however, neither would add on, sending the game to the half tied at 1-1.
At the half, Ohio scored one goal on 15 shots with four on goal, while taking five corners. UIC recorded one goal on six shots with three on goal and did not record a corner.
UIC looked to take the lead early in the second half on a ball in the 48th minute, however Rammel was able to save it by diving to her right, keeping the score at 1-1. UIC continued to put the pressure on the Ohio defense early in the half, however, the Bobcats were able to keep the Flames off the board.
The Bobcats looked to strike in the 78th minute, when Robinson and Brooker both fired shots at an open UIC goal, however, the Flames were able to recover with two defensive saves to keep the game tied at 1-1.
Minutes later, after the Bobcats were rewarded a free kick after a UIC yellow card, Cochrane once again capitalized on her opportunity, scoring her second of the game to put Ohio up 2-1 late in the second half.

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University soccer opened the 2026 season Thursday, Aug. 12, at Scicluna Field with a 3-1 comeback win over Duquesne University.
The Eagles erased a one-goal deficit and dominated the second half to secure their first-ever home victory against the Dukes. EMU tallied three goals in a home opener for the first time since defeating UIC 3-1, Sept. 6, 2015, and recorded its first three-goal match since a 3-2 win over Northern Illinois, Oct. 26.
Rosalie Takacsy (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) set up both the equalizer and the game-winning goal with assists off corner kicks. Kaylee Synk (North Olmsted, Ohio/Saint Joseph Academy) delivered the go-ahead tally in the 71st minute, Christie Fransen (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) scored the equalizer in the 19th minute, and Madison Hurst (Wexford, Pa./Allison Park, Pa.) capped the scoring in the 77th minute.
Duquesne converted a penalty kick in the 13th minute for a 1-0 lead. Six minutes later, Fransen finished Takacsy's corner at the top center of the net to tie the match. The teams remained even at halftime. Synk broke the deadlock in the 71st minute, slotting home another corner from Takacsy. Hurst added insurance less than seven minutes later, finishing a pass from Aniyah Mack (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) for the 3-1 final. Synk and Hurst continued to drive the attack, while Takacsy anchored the midfield.
Ella Holland (Dunwoody, Ga./Dunwoody) made four saves and held Duquesne off the board for the final 78 minutes. Eastern Michigan finished with 14 shots, seven on goal, and seven corner kicks, while holding the Dukes to nine shots, five on frame, and six corners.

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team defeated Niagara 2-0 in the regular season opener at Broadview Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Bulls struck first in the 18th minute as Mae Hunt took a free kick and played a ball into the box that was knocked down but Eva Blatz was in the right place at the right time to knock the rebound into the back of the net to put UB up 1-0.
The Bulls continued to attack in the 23rd minute as Ella McDonald wove through the Niagara defense and drilled a shot that sailed just high, but she was back in the mix just a few minutes later as she played a perfect ball across the box to the foot of Sofia Mastracci who one-timed a shot into the back of the net to give the Bulls a 2-0 lead.
The Purple Eagles threatened in the 37th minute as Izzy Schmidt ripped a shot on target from just outside the box but Lexie Thompson made a highlight reel leaping save to knock the ball out of play and preserve UB's two goal lead at the half.
Buffalo created more chances in the second half as Maddy Murphy played a ball across to Emma Patti who fired a shot that sailed just left and later Gabriella Capra created space and drilled a shot that just missed the top right corner.
The Bulls then had two chances late as Mastracci banged a shot off the crossbar in the 85th minute and McDonald fought through contact and curled a shot on net that just missed the top left corner, but the effort was more than enough to secure the victory.
Buffalo outshot Niagara 15-5 on the night, including a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal, while also earning a pair of corner kick opportunities. Thompson made one save on the night while Julia Poissant made three stops for the Purple Eagles.
