WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The RedHawks took down Purdue Tuesday evening in an extra-innings 5-3 thriller on the road, picking up their first win over a Big Ten team since 2023, which also came against the Boilermakers. Dominic Krupinski had three hits on five at-bats, including the RBI single that gave Miami the lead in the 11th inning. The RedHawks improve to 23-12 with the win, while Purdue falls to 25-11.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The RedHawks were not able to score after loading the bases in the first inning. Jack Geiser recorded three straight outs in the bottom of the first to keep it a tie game.
  • Miami took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Diego Cruz took first base after an HBP, stole second base and advanced to third base on an error. Matthew Buffington drove him home with a groundout.
  • Purdue answered with two runs in the bottom of the second. After two HBPs, the Boilers hit an RBI single and a sac fly to take the lead.
  • The RedHawks took a 3-2 lead in the top of the third. Ignacio Gonzalez reached on a fielding error, and Krupinski singled to put runners at the corners. Ryan Novak sent Gonzalez home with a sac fly and Cruz singled to bat in Krupinski.
  • Geiser had another one-two-three inning in the bottom of the third to keep the lead.
  • Purdue tied the game with a solo home run in the fourth.
  • Geiser, Jake Tedesco and Austin Berggren held the Boilermakers scoreless through regulation. Berggren finished the ninth inning with back-to-back swinging strikeouts.
  • Pinch hitter Mason Breidenbach doubled in the tenth, and Cruz was intentionally walked, but the RedHawks were unable to score. Marc Iozzo came in to pitch in relief and saw three up, three down to bring the game to inning number 11.
  • At the top of the 11th inning, Marcus Dierks led off with a double and advanced to third on a single by Evan Appelwick. With nobody out, Tommy Harrison walked and loaded the bases. On a 2-2 count, Krupinski hit a single through the left side, scoring Dierks to take a 4-3 lead. Novak followed with a sac fly, adding an insurance run and making it a 5-3 ballgame.
  • After giving up a leadoff double, the RedHawks turned a tight double play to set up a two-out, empty-bases situation. Iozzo sent down the game's final batter to put a lid on Miami's 5-3 victory over the Boilermakers.

The Akron baseball team cruised past the Youngstown State Penguins 11-1 at Skeeles Field on Tuesday to begin a busy week.

At the plate, the Zips were paced by Brody Chrisman, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a home run and two RBI. Brady Bowen furnished a noteworthy performance as well, going 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Mitchel Szymczak also helped out for Akron, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI.

John Allen (1-1) got the win for Akron (16-20). The left-hander went four shutout innings, giving up one hit, no walks and striking out two. Parker Munday also pitched well, going one shutout inning while allowing one hit, walking one and striking out three.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Akron's offense started clicking and put up six runs, including a two-run double off the bat of Bowen.

The Penguins failed to push any runs across before the Zips built on their lead in the third inning. Bowen came across to score the lone run of the inning for Akron, which brought the Zips lead to 7-0.

Akron kept Youngstown State scoreless before expanding their lead to 8-0 the following inning.

The Penguins gained ground, closing the gap to 8-1 until Akron added some insurance in the seventh. bringing the Akron advantage to 11-1.

Kent State got back in the win column in dominant fashion Tuesday afternoon, rolling past Mercyhurst 14-2 in seven innings to improve to 26-9 overall.

The Golden Flashes jumped on Mercyhurst starter Ryan Okopal immediately in the first inning. Brady Marshall walked, and Ripken Reese singled before a pitch hit Nolan Belcher to load the bases. After a fielder's choice, Sawyer Solitaria singled home a run and then both he and Micah Rienstra-Kiracofe executed a double steal, with Rienstra-Kiracofe scoring to give Kent State a 2-0 lead.

Mercyhurst pulled within 2-1 in the second on a Zac Evenson RBI single, but the Flashes answered with a three-run third. Rienstra-Kiracofe led it off with a solo home run, and Kent State added two more on a Hunter Klotz RBI groundout and a Grady Mee RBI single to push the lead to 5-1.

Two more runs crossed in the fourth on an Alejandro Covas RBI single and a wild pitch, and Mercyhurst's Zach Black hit a solo home run in the bottom half to make it 7-2. Kent State put the game away with three runs in the fifth. Reese singled home a run, Solitaria doubled home another, and Covas drove in a third with a double, stretching the lead to 10-2.

The sixth inning was the final blow. Brody Williams doubled, and Klotz walked before Mee singled to load the bases. Marshall followed with an RBI single, and Belcher reached on a Mercyhurst error that scored two more. Rienstra-Kiracofe then singled home another to push the lead to 14-2, and Grant Keffaber and Peyton Williams held the Lakers scoreless the rest of the way to complete the run-rule victory.

Rienstra-Kiracofe went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Solitaria finished 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Covas went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Williams went 2-for-4 with a double and two stolen bases. Reese added two hits and an RBI, while Marshall contributed an RBI single and a walk. Mee went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two walks, and Belcher scored three times while driving in a run. Lind earned the win (3-0), allowing one run over two innings of relief.
