After a double play helped the Broncos keep Valparaiso off of the scoreboard in the top of the first, the home team opened the scoring in the bottom half. Tanner Mally got Western Michigan going with a lead-off single, and then stole both second and third base. With two outs, Michael Maloney came through with an RBI single to give WMU the early edge.
Western Michigan tripled its advantage in the third. Cooper Hums started the frame with a base hit, swiped second and then scored on a Drew Howard single. With the bases loaded later in the frame, Mason Pilarski picked up an RBI on a ground ball which brought Mark Mennecke in to make it 3-0.
Valparaiso pulled one back in the fourth and another in the seventh to close the gap to 3-2.
The Broncos countered with a pair in the home half of the seventh. After an error got WMU started, a walk and a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position. Jacob Rowold plated the first run with a sacrifice fly, and Pilarski followed with an RBI single to stretch the lead to 5-2.
The Beacons picked up a pair of unearned tallies in the eighth to once again climb to within a run, but Turner Doran got a strikeout to end the frame and keep Western Michigan on top. Doran returned to the hill in the ninth and stranded a one-out double to lock down his league-leading seventh save of the year.
True freshman Drew Everingham made his first career start on the mound and got the WMU staff started with a pair of scoreless frames. He then turned things over to fellow lefty Joey Wizceb, who gave the Broncos 3.0 solid innings to earn his first win of the season.
