KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's tennis team extended its winning streak to five matches after a 7-0 sweep of Ferris State at West Hills Athletic Club on Friday afternoon.
The two teams battled for the doubles point, with WMU taking the early advantage on a 6-1 win by
Ayana Yaguchi and Lola Glanz at No. 2 over Madleine Peisley and Yara Madi. FSU tied it up with a 6-3 win at No. 1 by Ayva Johnstone and Maria Fernanda Hernandez Ferrer.
Frida Weijerman and
Marielou Baudouin clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 3 over Ainzley Zulueta and Ana Sofia Hernandez Ferrer.
Senior
Audrey Smitek quickly pushed the Broncos' lead to 20 with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 over Ana Sofia Hernandez Ferrer. Weijerman then made it 3-0 with a victory at No. 2 over Madi 6-3, 6-3. The match-winning point came courtesy of sophomore
Sienna Osborne at No. 4. She defeated Maria Fernanda Hernandez Ferrer 2-6, 6-0, 6-0. WMU's fifth point was added by freshman
Ayana Yaguchi, with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5 over Katherine Earnst. Baudouin made it 6-0 with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 decision against Zulueta at No. 6. The final point came from Glantz, who defeated Peisley 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 1
The Broncos wrap up non-conference play next Friday, hosting Northwood at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
Rockets Pick Up Victory Over Youngstown State | Box Score
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's tennis team rolled to a 6-1 win over Youngstown State at Twos Athletic Club in Toledo, Ohio on Friday afternoon.
UT (5-4) earned wins on five out of six singles courts and picked up the doubles point. Junior
Gaby Rondon clinched match point with a straight-set victory on the No. 6 singles court.
On the No. 4 singles court, sophomore
Annika Munson picked up her sixth-consecutive singles victory with a 6-3, 6-0 decision. Freshman
Anastasia Akuginova earned her sixth singles victory of the dual season with a straight-set win on the No. 5 court.
Isabella Barretto tallied a 6-3, 6-3 win on the No. 2 court while
JJ Scholten earned a 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 win on the No. 1 court to round out the Rocket singles wins.
UT also won the doubles court as
Neha Guru and Barretto recorded a 7-5 win on the No. 1 court and Rondon and Akuginova combined for a 6-4 victory on the No. 2 court.
Toledo will head to Florida for two matchups next week. The Rockets will face FGCU on Tuesday, March 3 and Furman on Wednesday, March 4. Both matches are set to begin at 10:00 a.m.
Bowling Green Sweeps Northern Kentucky in Straight Sets | Box Score
PERRYSBURG, Ohio – The Bowling Green Falcons (6-4) rolled to a 7-0 victory over the Northern Kentucky Norse (2-5) on Friday afternoon inside the Perrysburg Tennis Center. The Falcons won every point in straight sets.
BGSU quickly secured the doubles point, winning at No. 1 doubles (Clemens/Liu, 6-2) and No. 2 doubles (Blair/Fonseca, 6-3). No. 3 doubles were tied, 4-4, when BGSU clinched the doubles point.
The Falcons moved through singles play quickly.
Qianyu Liu was first off the court after her opponent retired with the BGSU junior leading, 4-2.
BGSU heads to Southern California on Monday and Tuesday for a spring break trip. BGSU is at UC Irvine on Monday and at Point Loma on Tuesday.
Coach Maines Reaches Milestone in Bulls' Victory at Cleveland State | Box Score
BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team swept Cleveland State 7-0 on Friday afternoon. It was a milestone day for head coach
Kristen Maines as she recorded her 200
th career win.
The Bulls got off to a great start as
Esmee Andresen and
Maria Glowacka won 6-3 at first doubles and
Julia Laspro and
Sarah Hartel picked up a 6-2 win at the third position to secure the doubles point for UB and give the Bulls a 1-0 lead in the match.
Andresen continued her strong play in singles action as she won 6-3, 6-1 at first singles, and Glowacka followed with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the third position before Hartel clinched the match for UB with a 6-4, 6-2 win at fourth singles.
Liv Roestel battled to a 7-6, 6-3 win at fifth singles, Laspro overcame a dropped second set to win 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 at second singles and
Blanca Berges rounded out the scoring with a three-set victory of her own, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, at six singles.
Buffalo returns to action on Saturday as it hosts Cornell at Miller Tennis Center at 1:30 pm.
UMass Picks Up Fifth-Straight Victory | Box Score
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts tennis earned its fifth straight triumph after taking down Stony Brook, 4-0, on Friday afternoon at the Bay Road Indoor Tennis Center.
The victory improved the Minutewomen to 7-1 overall on the year.
UMass picked up the doubles point with wins at courts No. 3 and No. 2.
Madara Markevica and
Martina Pavissich defeated Stony Brook's Mila Charles and Laura Ozola, 6-1, at No. 3 doubles, before
Amanda de Oliveira and
Amelia Tye took down Sanjana Devineni and Mia Palladino, 6-1, at No. 2.
Ella Faessler and
Renata Farima led 5-2 at court No. 1 before the doubles competition came to a halt.
Continuing momentum in singles play, the Minutewomen tallied three straight points. Pavissich downed Paisha Douglas of Stony Brook, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 3 slot, before
Fiona Ao won 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 over Stony Brook's Devineni at the No. 4 position. Faessler clinched the match point at No. 1 singles with a 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(10) victory over Elena Lobo-Corral of Stony Brook.
Tye was leading 7-5, 5-7, 3-2 at No. 2 and Markevica was ahead in one game 6-4, 2-3 at No. 5, before the match came to a conclusion.
Massachusetts travels to Hanover, New Hampshire, on Sunday, March 1, to face Dartmouth at 2 p.m.
