Buffalo Shows Promise at Penn State Invitational

STATE COLLEGE, PA – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team competed at the Penn State Invitational this weekend.

The Bulls kicked things off on Friday with a strong performance in singles action as Miko Lapalme picked up a pair of wins over Cleveland State, defeating Max Henson 6-2, 6-3 and Alexander Nikolov 7-5, 6-1. Six other Bulls also picked up a win in singles action as Minjae Kim defeated Cleveland State's Tristan Stine 6-1, 6-1, Connor Doig battled to a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Cleveland State's Nikolas Jacobson, Mathis Salvestre defeated Penn State's F.G. Borch-Nielsen 6-3, 6-2, Onder Balci battled to a 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-1 win over Cleveland State's Nicolas Wild, Michael Malkin took down CSU's Connor Thornton 6-2, 6-4 and Cowen Lau defeated Columbia's Tristan Lee 6-4, 6-2.

Buffalo then went 4-3 in doubles action as the UB duo of Doig and Kim defeated Cleveland State's Tristan Stine and Nikolas Jacobson 6-3 before taking down Penn State's Kyle Chesman and David Lindsay 6-3. Lapalme and Salvestre got on the board with a 7-6 victory over Cleveland State's Max Henson and Nico Jamison and Balci and Malkin defeated CSU's Connor Thornton and Nicolas Wild 6-2.

On Saturday, Kim and Salvestre picked up a pair of singles victories each, with the former defeating PSU's Borch-Nielsen 6-2, 6-3 before taking down Columbia's Charlie Valentine 6-3, 7-5 and the latter defeating PSU's Reiya Hattori 7-5, 6-3 before beating CSU's Connor Thornton 6-1, 7-5. Elsewhere in singles action, Malkin defeated Columbia's Tristan Lee 6-0, 6-3, Lau overcame a dropped second set for a  6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win over Borch-Nielsen, Lapalme cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Wild and Doig defeated Lee 6-3, 7-6.

In doubles play, Doig and Kim went 2-0 on the day, defeating Columbia's Lee/ Valentine 6-3 and PSU's Borch/Nielsen/Nikolov 6-3. Lapalme and Salvestre also picked up a victory, defeating PSU's Hattori/Shyovitz 6-2.

The Bulls then wrapped up play on Sunday with a pair of singles wins over Cleveland State as Kim cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Thornton and Balci defeated Nikolov 6-2, 6-4. In doubles action, Doig and Kim cruised to a 6-0 win over Cleveland State's Thornton/Wild and Balci and Malkin also picked up a 6-3 win.

Up next, the Bulls will compete at the ITA New England Regionals, hosted by Harvard, October 8-12.
