TOLEDO, Ohio - The University of Toledo roared out to a three-score halftime lead and withstood a second-half rally to earn a critical 45-38 Mid-American Conference victory over Western Michigan on Saturday at the Glass Bowl.
The Rockets (6-2, 3-1 MAC) blasted off in the first half, building a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and led 31-14 at halftime. The Broncos (5-3, 3-1 MAC) got within three, 38-35, after the third quarter and tied it in the fourth, but the Rockets retook the lead and forced a 3-and-out and intercepted a pass in the final minutes. The Rockets handed its second consecutive opponent its first MAC loss.
Despite having just one opening day starter on the offensive line, CJ Miller didn't have any trouble finding space to run, rushing for 183 yards on 33 carries (5.5 yards per carry) and a touchdown.
Autavius Ison and John Alan Richter added rushing scores on the afternoon.
Adjatay Dabbs (124 yards, eight catches) and Bryson Hammer (107 yards, seven catches) made dual 100-yard receivers.
Richter threw for 391 yards, the second-most of his career, on 29-of-41 passing with three touchdowns.
Defensive end Andrew Zock continued his impressive month of October (dubbed Zock-tober) with five tackles, two tackles for loss and a strip sack which led to a Rockets fumble recovery. Nicholas Thompson marked a career-high nine tackles and his first career interception.
Israel Petite snagged the game-sealing INT in the fourth, totaling two pass breakups and four tackles. The linebacking duo of Julian Fox and Isaac Zay combined for 14 stops and two TFLs.
The victory doubled as the 100th career win for Mike Jacobs, who became the 17th-fastest NCAA football coach across all divisions to reach the century mark (125 games).
KENT, Ohio – Dru DeShields accounted for five total touchdowns to lead Kent State past rival Akron 35-20 Saturday afternoon at Dix Stadium. With the victory, the Golden Flashes kept the Wagon Wheel home and secured their second straight win over the Zips, improving to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in MAC play, while Akron fell to 1-7 and 0-4 in conference action.
Akron struck first midway through the opening quarter on a 6-yard touchdown run by Jordan Gant to take a 7-0 lead. Kent State responded late in the second quarter when DeShields orchestrated an eight-play, 77-yard drive, capping the march with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Wayne Harris with just 36 seconds remaining in the half to tie the score at 7-7 entering the locker room.
The Zips reclaimed the lead early in the third quarter on another Gant touchdown run, but the Flashes answered immediately as DeShields connected with Harris for a 55-yard touchdown strike to knot the game at 14-14. After an Akron field goal, Kent State seized its first lead of the afternoon on a four-play, 75-yard drive when DeShields found Hunter Hopperton for a 2-yard touchdown pass, the first touchdown catch of Hopperton's collegiate career, making it 21-17 entering the final period. In the fourth quarter, Norey Johnson intercepted a pass, and Tanner Mintz recovered a muffed kickoff, setting up back-to-back Flashes scores: a 19-yard touchdown pass to Harris and a 1-yard touchdown rush by DeShields to push the advantage to 35-17. A late Akron field goal sealed the final 35-20 margin.
Harris was remarkable on the afternoon, setting a new career high with three receiving touchdowns as part of a nine-reception, 156-yard performance. Kent State generated 376 total yards of offense, converted 4-of-11 third downs, and was disciplined throughout, committing just three penalties for 35 yards.
