CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Mid-American Conference (MAC) is setting the pace for the future of college athletics by becoming one of the first leagues to implement Teamworks General Manager across nearly its entire membership. Ten of the conference’s twelve member institutions have adopted the technology, creating a unified platform for managing revenue-share payments and financial operations across the league.
Following successful implementation by six early adopter institutions, the MAC, backed by steadfast support from its athletic directors, led a coordinated, conference-level decision to expand General Manager to additional programs.
“Teamworks GM becomes both a phenomenal planning tool and a turnkey operational resource for our schools," said Dr. Jon A. Steinbrecher, Commissioner of the Mid-American Conference (MAC). It simplifies processes, gives our administrators confidence in the data they’re working with, and allows them to support student-athletes more effectively, whether that’s budgeting, contracting, or even tax reporting.
Dr. Steinbrecher continued, “By partnering with Teamworks through the conference office, we’ve created common language, consistency, and economies of scale, so we’re all working from the same playbook. Every dollar we save on operations is another dollar we can put back into enhancing the student-athlete experience, and that’s really what this is all about."
Teamworks GM provides athletic departments with a single, secure platform to manage revenue-share, contracts, scholarships, and payments. It also enables administrators to build mock roster scenarios, model scholarship allocations, and forecast budget impacts in real time. By unifying these critical functions, General Manager helps athletic departments streamline operations, eliminate manual processes, and focus resources on supporting their student-athletes.
“The world of college athletics is changing swiftly and dramatically. Simultaneously, managing rosters, NIL licensing and the transfer portal represents an exciting new era of college athletics that requires a refined strategy and new tools to manage,” said Vice President and Director of Athletics at Toledo, Bryan B. Blair. “We feel the addition of Teamworks GM will help us ensure that our resources are fully focused on supporting our student-athletes’ success, and will help give us a competitive edge in this new era of college athletics.
For members of the MAC, adopting General Manager provides a significant competitive advantage. By operating on a single system, athletic directors, administrators, and coaches can collaborate, share best practices, and execute revenue-share operations with greater speed, transparency, and consistency. This unified approach positions the MAC ahead of peer conferences still navigating fragmented processes.
“The MAC’s sweeping adoption of Teamworks General Manager is a clear example of how a collective approach drives real impact,” said Kevin Barefoot, Senior Vice President of Business Development, North America at Teamworks. “We’re excited to continue conversations with other conferences to explore how this model can accelerate adoption, create efficiencies, and unify programs across the country.”
A Model for Conference-Led Innovation
This partnership reflects a growing trend in college athletics: conferences taking a leadership role in driving operational transformation.
? Accelerated Rollout: Schools bypassed traditional procurement to gain immediate access to tools that simplify critical processes.
? Economic Benefit: Group discount structure for purchasing at scale.
? Unified Standards: By unifying its programs on a single system, the MAC delivers a competitive edge through consistency, collaboration, and speed in executing revenue-share operations.
“Implementing Teamworks General Manager allows us to take our operations to the next level,” said Mark Alnutt, Vice President and Director of Athletics at Buffalo. “With GM, we gain a comprehensive platform that simplifies roster management, enhances financial planning, and helps us proactively navigate the changing dynamics of college athletics.
As the landscape of college athletics continues to evolve, the MAC stands at the forefront, embracing centralized solutions that empower institutions, foster collaboration, and enhance the student-athlete experience.
