Mountaineers Move On to Semifinals with 3-1 Victory

HARRISONBURG, Va. — The App State field hockey team defeated Ohio 3-1 in the quarterfinals of the 2025 MAC Field Hockey Championship.

This marks the first postseason victory for the Mountaineers since 2022 and head coach Emily Dinsmore's first postseason win at the helm.

Both Sophia Baxter and Frederique Grimbergen scored in the match, with Grimbergen netting the Mountaineers' first two goals of the game.

With the win, the Mountaineers advance to the semifinals of the tournament, where they will face No. 14 nationally ranked, No. 2 seed UMass on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.

The Mountaineers (14-5, 7-2 MAC) got on the scoreboard first, with Grimbergen slotting the ball into the bottom right of the cage to put the Mountaineers up one. App State's offense applied pressure to begin the game, earning three penalty corners and forcing four shots.

The Mountaineers added another goal when Grimbergen scored her second of the game to make it a two-score lead. Heading into the halftime break, App State added one penalty corner and forced one save from the Ohio goalkeeper.

It was a scoreless third period for both teams, with goalkeeper Claire Grenis totaling two saves in the period.

Dominating most of the possession, Baxter scored her 14th goal of the season off the Mountaineers' lone penalty corner of the period. Ohio (5-13, 3-6 MAC) found the back of the cage for its lone goal of the game, which came on its only penalty corner of the game. The Mountaineers finished the game outshooting Ohio 14-3 and holding a 5-1 advantage in penalty corners.

The Mountaineers will face off against No. 2 UMass in the semifinals of the 2025 MAC Field Hockey Championship. First touch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m., streaming on ESPN+.
