Wrestling Posts Strong Finishes at Season Openers

Buffalo Bulls
CLARION, PA – The University at Buffalo wrestling team opened the season at the Clarion Open on Sunday. Three Bulls earned spots on the podium as Rafael Knapp finished second, Marcus Petite finished fourth and Kaleb Burgess took fifth.

Knapp was the three seed at 174. He opened with an 11-8 decision over John Altieri of Clarion and followed with an 11-2 major decision over Bellarmine's Tyler Martinez. He topped Bode Marlow of Pittsburgh, 8-5, to advance to the final. In the finals, Knapp met top-seed Grant ODell of Bellarmine and dropped a tough 4-2 decision to settle for second.

Petite was the three seed at 184. He easily won his first match, 16-2, over Bellarmine's Jack Ring and then held off Clarion's Adrian Gacek, 2-1, to advance to the semifinals. Petite dropped a close 4-2 decision to two-seed Brian Burburija of Air Force in the semifinals and then dropped a 7-3 decision to Cornell's Christian Hansen in the third-place match.

Burgess stumbled in his first match and then rolled through his next five opponents to earn fifth place. He first beat Clarion's Talen Hubbard 3-0 and then earned a 10-3 decision over Ethan Beloncik of Air Force. Burgess got a 7-0 decision over Holden Huhn in his next match and then defeated Clarion's Cody Hamilton, 5-2, to advance to the fifth-place match. He cruised past Cornell's Ryder Yoshitake 12-1 to take home fifth place.

Max Elton (125) and Sam Ewing (149) each had three wins on the day. Caden Barrientos (125), Kelin Laffey (165), Brady Unger (165) and Connor Scuilla (197) all posted two wins.


Edinboro Fighting Scots
Clarion, Pa. –
The Edinboro men's wrestling team began the 2025-26 season at the Clarion Open on Sunday.
 
At 125, Brycen Arbogast notched a 3-2 record. He dropped his opening match 5-0 to Davian Guanajuato of SIUE. In his first consolation match, Arbogast teched Riley Bernash 15-0. He followed that up with a 10-5 decision over Shay Korhorn of Bellarmine. In the consolation round of eight, Arbogast notched a 15-5 major over Nikos Flipos. The run came to an end with a 21-4 tech fall loss to Travis Clawson of Clarion.
 
Alaa Aly posted a 2-2 day at 165 dropping his opening match of the day to Tavius Hosley of SIUE 4-3. In consolation action, he defeated Bellermine's Noah Hall 6-3. Aly tallied a 4-1 win over Hadley Harrison then dropped a 7-3 decision to Clarion's Alejandro Herrera-Rondon to close out the day.
 
Ben Fuller added a 2-2 day of his own at 133. In his opening match of the day Fuller scored a 2-0 victory over Diego Stropko. Fuller dropped an 18-2 tech fall to Joey Fischer of Clarion in the round of 16. In the consolation match, Fuller bounced back defeating Dylan Kadish of Clarion 11-2. Fullers day came to an end with an 18-2 loss to Trayce Eckman of Bellermine.
 
Nick Lodato also finished the Clarion Open 2-2 at 197. He started the day with a 9-3 decision over Jake Conroy. Patrick Brophy defeated Lodato 7-2 in the quarterfinals. In his first consolation match, Lodato topped Cornell's Zahir McLean-Felix 12-7. In his final match of the day, Lodato dropped a 17-2 tech fall to Myron Mendez of SIUE.
 
At 141, Parker Sentipal was 2-2. In a high scoring opening match, Sentipal fell 11-6 to Danny Martinez of SIUE. He bounced back in the consolation rounds defeating Nikolas Ferra of Sacred Heart 9-4. Then Sentipal majored Christian Ford 14-3. The day came to an end with a 19-4 tech fall loss to Sam Herring.
 
The Scots are back in action on Saturday when they travel to the Michigan State Open.

Rider Broncs
PRINCETON, NJ – Elijah Griffin made a statement in his Rider debut, capturing the 141-pound title and knocking off two ranked opponents to lead the Broncs in their season opener at the Princeton Open on Sunday. Five other Broncs joined Griffin on the podium in a strong start to the 2025-26 campaign.

At 125 lbs, No. 26 Tyler Klinsky posted a pair of dominant tech falls in the first round and quarterfinals before meeting No. 18 Marc-Anthony McGowan (Princeton) in the semifinals. McGowan opened fast with two takedowns to build a 6-1 lead after one and went on to win by 14-2 major decision.

Klinsky bounced back strong, securing three takedowns in a 10-3 decision over Charlie Palmer (Army) to claim third place.

At 133 lbs, Will Betancourt edged Jeff Lopez (Oregon State) 4-1 in his opening match thanks to a first-period takedown, then rolled through the quarters with a 14-4 major decision. Facing No. 24 Ethan Berginc (Army) in the semifinals, Betancourt dropped an 8-0 major decision before securing third place via medical forfeit.

At 141 lbs, Griffin wasted no time making his mark in his Bronc debut. He rolled into the semifinals with a tech fall, decision, and major decision before facing No. 14 Wyatt Henson (Lock Haven), the MAC's preseason No. 1 at the weight. Griffin struck first with a takedown that proved decisive, holding off Henson for a 4-3 upset victory. He then outlasted No. 21 Braden Basile (Army) in the finals, tallying two takedowns en route to an 8-6 win and the 141-pound crown.

At 149 lbs, Dylan Layton impressed in his Rider debut, upsetting No. 2 seed CJ Hamblin (Oregon State) 12-2 in the second round before advancing to the finals. Layton's run ended against No. 9 Chance Lamer (Nebraska), who earned a 14-3 win, leaving Layton as the runner-up.

At 165 lbs, No. 28 Brendon Abdon continued his steady climb, outscoring opponents 36-9 en route to the semifinals before falling to No. 19 Ty Whalen (Princeton), 16-0. Abdon rebounded with a hard-fought 9-7 victory over Dakota Morris (Army) to take third.

At 197 lbs, No. 22 Brock Zurawski picked up right where he left off last season, racking up 43 combined points in his second-round and quarterfinal wins. In the semis, he met No. 19 JT Davis (Lehigh) in a tight contest that went to overtime tied 1-1. Zurawski escaped in nine seconds during the first rideout, then sealed the match with a takedown for a 5-3 decision. 

Zurawski advanced to the finals where he faced No. 6 Justin Rademacher (Oregon State). Rademacher jumped out to a 7-0 advantage after the opening period and extended his lead with an escape and another takedown in the second to make it 11-0. Zurawski battled back with a takedown in the final frame, but Rademacher responded late to secure a 16-5 major decision, giving Zurawski a runner-up finish at 197 lbs.

Ohio Bobcats
SALEM, Va. –
The Ohio wrestling team opened the 2025-26 season on Sunday at the Southeast Open in Salem, Va.
 
Open Highlights
Redshirt sophomore Jeremy Olszko notched the Bobcat's first win of the day, wrestling at 184 lbs. After a bye in the round of 32, Olszko defeated North Carolina by decision, 10-5. The North Carolina opponent began the first period with a takedown, but Olszko earned an escape, takedown, and nearfall in the second period to pull ahead for the win.  
 
Wrestling in the 165 lb. bracket, redshirt junior Jack Lledo.lost in the round of 16 with a 17-4 major decision. After moving to the consolation bracket, Lledo pulled an 8-2 decision win against Maryland in the round of eight. Lledo earned a takedown in the first and third period with an escape in the second.
 
Wrestling at 125 lbs. for Ohio was junior Ryan Meek.After his bye, Meek lost a 6-5 decision in the round of 16, moving him to the consolation bracket. In the consolation round of 16, Meek was successful defeating his opponent by 2-0 decision.
 
Wrestling in the 157 lb. for Ohio was redshirt junior Logan Cravatas. In the round of 32, Cravatas lost to NC State, moving to the consolation bracket. In the consolation of 16, Cravatas recorded a takedown and nearfall back-to-back in the first period, ending the match early with a 7-1 fall.
 
In his second consolation match, Cravatas was successful again with a 14-3 major decision. Cravatas was quick with a takedown in the first period to gain the lead. In the second, he earned another and an escape point. Going into the third, Cravatas achieved two more takedowns to defeat his opponent from VMI.
 
Freshman/Sophomore Highlights
Freshman Carson Weber provided the highlight of the day for the Bobcats, taking home the title in the 149 lb. freshman/sophomore bracket. Weber began his day in the round of 16, defeating his opponent from Presbyterian by major decision, 12-3. Weber moved on to the quarterfinals, defeating his opponent by decision, 4-0. In the semi finals, Weber again won by major decision, this time by a score of 12-1. Wrestling in the final, Weber was dominant, taking home a victory by technical fall, 15-0 with 5:31 remaining.
 
The Bobcats will be back in action at the Ohio Showcase in Athens on Saturday, November 8. The showcase is set to start at 5 p.m. and will be streaming on ESPN+.


Clarion Golden Eagles
CLARION, Pa. -- The Golden Eagles wrestling team competed in their home tournament Sunday, finishing 8th overall as a team with 97 total points in an incredibly competitive field. The Golden Eagles also finished with two individual placers in Joey Fischer who placed 4th at 133 pounds, and Adrian Gacek who placed 5th at 184 pounds.

A long-awaited season-opening event that has attracted some of the best collegiate wrestlers and programs in the country. Fischer entered today as the 4th seed at 133 pounds and opened his day with a 6-1 decision victory over Buffalo's Troy Guerra. Fischer then followed up with a scoring clinic on the feet and on top against Edinboro's Ben Fuller winning via tech-fall 18-2 5:27. That included 3 takedowns and 7 total near fall points. Fischer made it three straight wins by beating Air Force's Robert Wright by a 6-0 decision to advance to the Semi-Finals. Fischer would fall by major decision to top-seed Tyler Ferrara from Cornell in the Semi-Final match.

Fischer then matched up against Isaiah Cortez from Spartan Combat RTC in the 3rd place match. Cortez would pick up an early takedown in the first period followed by a quick escape from Fischer. Cortez would choose bottom to start the second period and earn a quick escape to make it 4-1 where the score remained at the end of the period. Fischer chose bottom to start the third period but would fail to escape and would fall to Isaiah Cortez 4-1 and take 4th place at 133 pounds at the Clarion Open.

Gacek was the only other individual placer for the Golden Eagles. Gacek started out strong with a pair of bonus point victories in the round of 32 and round of 16 respectively. First beating Cornell's Carson Crace by way of a 12-3 major decision and then beating Daniel Gurovich of Pittsburgh wrestling unattached via tech-fall 21-5 in just 3:37 scoring all his points on 7 takedowns, an absurd display of offense. Gacek's only loss of the day would come in his next match against Buffalo's Marcus Petite in a hard-fought 2-1 loss. Gacek would bounce right back with a lightning-fast pin in 13 seconds over Kyle Gallo. Followed by another tech-fall victory 23-4 in 4:22 over Reese Spiro putting on another incredible performance on his feet recording 6 takedowns, 4 of which came in the first period.

Gacek then matched up against SIUE's Deron Pulliam in the 5th place match at 184 pounds. Gacek would put the first points of the match on the board with a last second takedown to take a 3-0 lead heading into the second period. Gacek would then choose bottom and get an escape to make it 4-0, which is where the score would remain at the end of the 2nd period. Pulliam chose bottom and got out with a quick escape from Gacek. Gacek would then hang on to his lead, only giving up another point due to stall calls at the end of the match to win a 4-2 decision over Pulliam to take 5th place at 184 pounds.


Bloomsburg Huskies
PISCATAWAY, N.J. –
The Bloomsburg wrestling team turned in a strong showing at the Rutgers Duals on Saturday, highlighted by a commanding 40–4 victory over Centenary while battling through competitive matchups against Gardner-Webb and nationally ranked Rutgers.

The Huskies opened the day with an 18–16 heartbreaker against Gardner-Webb that came down to the final bout. Bloomsburg rallied from an early deficit behind a string of strong performances in the upper weights. Eric Alderfer and Ethan Ducca  notched back-to-back decisions at 174 and 184 pounds to pull the Huskies within striking distance, while Wyatt Bush delivered an overtime win at 197 pounds and heavyweight Mason Rebuck sealed the dual with a 12–1 major decision. Despite winning five of 10 bouts, Bloomsburg fell just short of the team victory.

Bloomsburg responded in emphatic fashion against Centenary, cruising to a 40–4 triumph. Jace Schafer opened the dual with a 17–2 technical fall at 125 pounds before Gavin Mundy pinned his opponent in just 1:34 at 133. Tristan Corbin added a 9–6 decision at 141, while William Morrow and Braidon Woodward each picked up bonus-point wins to keep the momentum rolling. Morrow pinned his opponent at 157 pounds for his first win by fall as a Husky. Logan Baker and Eric Alderfer contributed major decisions and technical falls, and Wyatt Bush and Coy Raines closed the dual with decisive wins to cap an six-bout streak of victories for the Huskies. Seven of the Huskies nine bout wins came by bonus point victories.

In their final dual of the day, the Huskies squared off against host Rutgers, ranked among the nation's top programs. Bloomsburg battled through a tough slate of nationally ranked opponents, with Alderfer again leading the way at 174 pounds with a hard-fought 6–5 decision over Nate Blanchette for the Huskies' lone win against the Scarlet Knights.

Alderfer finished the day 3–0, while Schafer, Bush, and Raines each posted multiple victories for Bloomsburg, which continues to build depth across its lineup early in the season.

"We competed hard today," emphasized head coach John Stutzman. "It's never easy with a new team but today let us know exactly where we're at and we are moving in the right direction."

The Huskies posted eight bonus point wins and picked up 15 individual match wins.

Bloomsburg returns to action next weekend when the Huskies travel to George Mason for the George Mason Duals on Sunday, November 9. Bloomsburg will open the day against Williams before taking on The Citadel. The Huskies will close out the day with Campbell University.

SIUE Cougars
CLARION, Penn. –
SIUE wrestling started the 2025-26 season a high note, placing third overall as a team at Sunday's Clarion Open.

The Cougars finished the day with 117.5 points. Ohio State won the tournament with 236 points followed by Cornell with 151. Air Force was SIUE's nearest competitor with 106.5 points.

Nine SIUE wrestlers walked away with podium finishes. Caleb Tyus, ranked No. 1 among Mid-American Conference wrestlers at 149 pounds, was SIUE's top place winner in third place. He defeated Ohio State's Ethan Stiles in the third-place match 10-4.

Alec Peralta (141) and Dominic Lopez (174) took fourth place in their respective weight classes.

SIUE's other top finishers included Marcel Lopez (5th/133), Danny Martinez (141/5th), Caleb Neal (174/5th), Deron Pulliam (184/6th), Myron Mendez (197/6th), and Bryson Buhk (285/6th).

The Cougars now move on to the Cyclone Invitational next Saturday in Ames, Iowa.
