BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team completed the weekend sweep at home on Sunday (March 24) with a 15-5 win over Akron in seven innings at Steller Field. The run-rule victory moves the Falcons to 9-0 to open MAC play, continuing the best MAC start in program history. This also marks three straight MAC sweeps for Bowling Green for the first time since the 2008 campaign.

The Falcons were paced in the win by Nathan Archer's 5-for-5 day at the plate, one shy of matching the program record for hits in a game. Archer also scored four times in the game and hit one of two BGSU doubles. DJ Newman added a 3-for-5 day at the dish with a team-leading four RBI. On the mound, Calvin Mitchell pitched 3.2 scoreless innings for the Falcons out of the bullpen on his way to the win.

ATHENS, Ohio – Central Michigan Baseball plated five runs in the first two innings on Sunday en route to defeating Ohio 7-2 and earning a series win over the Bobcats at Bob Wren Stadium.

The Chippewas (6-18, 3-6) return to Theunissen Stadium on Tuesday (March 26) for a midweek matchup against Saginaw Valley State before hitting the road for a weekend series against Eastern Michigan in Ypsilanti, starting on Thursday (March 28).

CMU's lineup came out of the gates firing. Senior infielder Danny Wuestenfeld was driven in by sophomore DH Cole Prout shortly after reaching base via walk. Sophomore catcher Spencer Verburg followed that up with an RBI single to score senior outfielder Jacob Donahue in the first inning.

The Chippewas responded to the early offensive surge by putting up a three spot in the second. CMU loaded the bases from three consecutive walks before freshman outfielder Mikey Murphy delivered a 3-RBI bases-clearing double.

Also delivering an offensive highlight was senior infielder Ely Stuart, who took a one-out offering in the bottom of the fifth and sent it over the center field wall for a solo home run. It was the final run scored by CMU.

Everyone in the Chippewas' lineup did their part, as each player reached base safely at least once. CMU's offense produced nine hits and nine walks in scoring its seven runs.

On the flipside, Ohio's offense logged six hits, leaving 15 runners on base when all was said and done. Chippewa starter Evan Waters (3-2) made life difficult for the Bobcats, as the sophomore left-handed pitcher struck out six and gave up one run on just four hits across his six innings.

Junior Quin Konuszewski entered in relief of Waters in the seventh and closed out the game giving up a run on just two hits over the final three innings.

Wuestenfeld and Stuart each logged a pair of hits to lead CMU. Wuestenfeld also drew a pair of walks and scored a run to cap off his impressive statline.

Murphy led all Chippewas with his three RBI, while four others registered an RBI of their own.

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Western Michigan baseball team wrapped up a three-game MAC series at Eastern Michigan by splitting a doubleheader with the Eagles on Sunday. The Broncos took game one, 8-3, with EMU taking the second game of the day, 3-0.

Nolan Vlcek turned in one of the best outings by a WMU starter to date in the first game of the day, as he worked a new career-high 6.1 innings and collected four strikeouts while limiting the Eagles to two runs. The senior's efforts earned him his first win as a Bronco.

The Western Michigan offense got Vlcek the lead in the second, as Grady Mee executed a perfect bunt to bring CJ Richmond in from third base.

The Broncos added another in the third when Richmond brought Cade Sullivan home with a two-out, RBI single. Richmond had a pair of hits in the opener, his fifth consecutive multi-hit game, but saw his 17-game hitting streak come to an end in game two.

EMU dented the scoreboard for the first time in the fourth with a two-out run which trimmed the margin to 2-1.

Western Michigan came right back with a pair in the next half inning, as Sullivan plated Connor Ostrander with a single, and Dylan Nevar brought Jackson Kitchen around with a sacrifice fly. Sullivan reached in all five trips to the plate in game one (3-for-3 with two walks) and had a team-high four hits for the day. Ostrander had three hits and scored three times in game one, both of which were career highs.

In the seventh, Nevar picked up two more RBIs with a single which brought both Ostrander and Sullivan around.

Eastern Michigan notched a run in the bottom of the inning to close the gap to 6-2, but Turner Doran came on with two on and one out and retired the next two Eagles to prevent the home team from getting any closer. The right-hander worked the final 2.2 innings to earn his first career save for the Brown and Gold.

Western Michigan answered EMU's run with a pair of insurance tallies in the eighth, as Ostrander delivered a two-out, RBI double, and Kitchen followed with a run-scoring single.

Game two was a pitchers' duel throughout. For Western Michigan, Jayden Dentler yielded just one run on two hits over his 4.0-plus innings of work. In total, the trio of Dentler, Luke Thelen and Hayden Berg limited the Eastern Michigan offense to four hits, the second-fewest allowed by the WMU staff in a game this season.

The Broncos had a couple of chances in the early going, as they had a pair of hits in the first and a Kitchen double in the third, but could not break the 0-0 deadlock.

Eastern Michigan broke the scoreless tie with a solo home run to start the fifth inning. The Eagles then added a pair of insurance tallies in the sixth to make it 3-0.

Berg came on and retired eight of the nine batters he faced while piling up a season-high four strikeouts, but WMU could not get its offense going, and did not get a runner past first base after the third inning.

KENT - The Golden Flashes split Sunday's double header with Saint Joe's, walking off the Hawks in game one and dropping game two.

A true pitcher's dual in game one as the teams combined for a total of four hits in the seven-inning game. Kent State scratched across a run in the third, without the benefit of a hit as a pair of walks, a wild pitch and a sac fly did the trick to give Kent State a 1-0 lead. After the Hawks pushed across an unearned run in the fourth, the Flashes' lone hit of the game came in the fourth as a double into the right field corner by Jake Casey moved Dom Kibler to third. A Connor Ashby sac fly pushed Kibler across to make it 2-1. It stayed that way until the seventh thanks to five strong innings from Calvin Bickerstaff. The right hander scattered three hits and struck out four in his outing.

The Hawks tied things in the seventh, working a bases loaded walk to tie the game at two. The Flashes then answered back in the bottom half, also not needing a hit to score. Bo Shinkle came in as a pinch runner, stole second then went to third on a wild pitch. After a Josh Johnson fly out, Shinkle then scored on the second wild pitch of the inning barely beating the throw home and giving Kent State its second-straight 3-2 win over the Hawks.

The Flashes saw their 21-game home win streak snapped in the nightcap, falling 5-0. The Hawks sent nine men to the plate in the fourth, using a pair of walks, two timely singles and a wild pitch to plate four off starter Joe Miceli. The Flashes would load the bases in the third and again in the fifth, but couldn't push a run across. Kent State would get a could of runners into scoring position, but couldn't find the timely hit as three Hawk pitchers combined on the shutout. Five relievers tossed the final six innings, allowing a run on three hits while striking out four.

The split moves Kent State to 11-12 on the season as they wrap up the non-con weekend portion of the regular season. A four-game road week gets started on Tuesday with a trip down to Columbus to face Ohio State. FIrst pitch against the Buckeyes is set for 6 p.m.
