TOLEDO, Ohio –Toledo (8-11, 6-2 MAC) went the distance with Buffalo (16-4, 6-2 MAC) in Mid-American Conference volleyball action for a second-straight match, but the Rockets prevailed on Saturday to end their weekend with a victory.
Saturday's match followed a similar script to Friday's match, though the ending changed in Toledo's favor. After winning the first two sets by scores of 25-19 and 25-23, respectively, the Rockets stumbled in the third and fourth sets. Buffalo won the third set, 25-21, before winning the fourth set handily, 25-15, to force a fifth frame. Toledo squandered an early lead but, facing an 11-8 deficit, dug in its heels and came back to win, 15-13, to come away with a big conference victory.
Taylor Alt provided the match-clinching kill, one of 20 terminations the senior outside hitter tallied on Saturday. Alt moved into second place in school history in career kills, with her total of 1,528 moving past Kate Bean's (2003-06) 1,515 kills. L.G. Bass (1984-87) is Toledo's all-time leader in career kills with 1,546. Alt needs just 19 kills to become Toledo's all-time leader.
Freshman Macy Hatkevich turned in a career-high 49 assists and added 11 digs, her third straight double-double and sixth of the season. Fifth-year senior Ryann Jaqua tied her season-high with 28 digs and brought her career total to 2,082. She trails former Toledo standout and current assistant coach Maurissa Leonard's (2015-18) 2,260 career digs for most in school history.
Sophomore Izzy Granger (12 kills) and senior Abby Erickson (11 kills) both reached double figures in terminations. Erickson had a terrific weekend, averaging 2.00 kills/set while attacking at a .472 clip. Senior Claire Eiden tied her career-high with 13 digs.
Toledo visits Ball State on Tuesday night before heading to Akron next weekend.
Buffalo scored the first four points of the match, but Toledo answered right back with four straight points of its own. After the Bulls went up 6-4, the Rockets used an 8-1 run to take a 12-7 lead. Though its lead dwindled to two at one point, Toledo held onto the lead for the rest of the first set and would win, 25-19, to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Abby Erickson led all players with five kills in the first set.
The Rockets were doubled up early, as the Bulls took a 6-3 lead in the second. Unfazed, Toledo scored 11 of the next 13 points to make it 14-8, with Jada Bouyer providing three of the 11 points during that stretch. The lead didn't quite last until the end of the set however, as Buffalo scored four straight points late to tie the score at 22-22. Bouyer responded with a termination to put UT up 23-22, which proved to be enough of a spark to lead to a 25-23 win.
Both teams traded leads early, but Buffalo was able to pull away midway through the third set to go up 15-12. Taylor Alt recorded back-to-back kills to put Toledo within one, but that would be the closest it would get. The Bulls were able to score points in bunches to keep themselves ahead, and went on to win the third set by a score of 25-21.
Toledo wasn't able to challenge Buffalo in the fourth set, as UB quickly opened up a 9-3 lead. The Bulls hit .407 in the fourth set, the highest single-set attack percentage for either team, and led wire-to-wire in there 25-15 victory to extend the match.
The Rockets jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the fifth and appeared to have momentum on its side before Buffalo scored four straight points to take a 7-6 advantage. Bouyer tied the score with a kill, but a 4-1 Buffalo run put Toledo in an 11-8 hole. The Bulls coughed up their lead, though, with four untimely errors to hand the Rockets a 12-11 lead late in the match. The Rockets never trailed again, and Alt's final kill of the night clinched the match.
