DAYTON, OH – Blue Collar U, the University at Buffalo men's basketball alumni program, claimed the 2022 TBT, winning the $1 million prize with an 89-67 win over Americana for Autism on Tuesday night at the UD Arena.
Blue Collar U raced out to a 25-13 lead through one quarter and the victory was never in doubt for the winningest players in University at Buffalo school history.
"This is a special group and as much as the money is great, the opportunity to still play together with your brothers and play for something bigger than yourself, that is priceless," said 2019 MAC Player of the Year and second all-time leading scorer CJ Massinburg.
The Blue Collar mentality that was shown for years in Alumni Arena was front and center in UD Arena on Tuesday evening. They outrebounded one of the top rebounding teams in the entire tournament, 38-25, and BCU also notched 23 assists, a staple of the tournament success for Americana for Autism.
In all, Blue Collar U shot 54.1% from the floor and 48.1% from behind the arc. Wes Clark finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, and four assists, while Massinburg, who was named the tournament MVP had 18 points and eight boards.
Clark and Nick Perkins were both named to the All-Tournament team as the big man finished with a team-high 19 points.
The Blue Collar U TBT squad featured former UB players that stretched back as far as the 2011-12 season when Xavier Ford was a freshman. He chipped in five points off the bench, one of the key players in Buffalo's first MAC Championship team of 2015.
All tournament long, the players of Blue Collar U were playing for the city of Buffalo, wearing the names of the victims of the mass shooting in the city this past May. Following the tournament, it was announced that Blue Collar U would donate those uniforms to the families of the vicitms.
This is the fourth straight year an alumni team has won the TBT championship and the second straight year it has been an alumni program from the state of New York, following the win from Boeheim's Army last year.
Blue Collar U will look to defend their title at the 2023 TBT next summer.
