Cleveland, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference announced on Monday the 2021 postseason field hockey award-winners. All seven field hockey coaches in the league voted for members of the All-MAC First Team and Second Team, as well as a Freshman, Offensive Player, Defensive Player, and Coach of the Year.
Claudia Negrete took the MAC Freshman of the Year honor back to Oxford, as Leo Berlie was the last Miami player to receive the recognition in 2017. A contributor on both sides of the field, the All-MAC Second Team member was instrumental to Miami's offensive success. After playing at least 30 minutes in all 13 games she played, Negrete entered the starting lineup against No. 2 Louisville and was second on the Miami roster in goals (9), points 23), shots (54), and shots on goal (36).
A mainstay in the Miami lineup, Luli Rosso was a force in the midfield for the RedHawks as she earned the MAC Defensive Player of the Year recognition after her first season in Oxford. A key component of Miami's defense, Rosso was named MAC Defensive Player of the Week three times and started all 15 games for the Red and White. She also totaled 12 shots and two goals, including the game-winning goal against Saint Louis on March 5.
App State field hockey saw three student-athletes land on the Mid-American Conference Postseason awards list, highlighted by Meghan Smart receiving the MAC Offensive Player of the Year award. Smart earns postseason honors for the first time in what was a breakout season for the senior. The Haddonfield, New Jersey, native is the first Mountaineer in program history to receive a Player of the Year honor as well.
