MAC Announces Women's Tennis Singles Player and Doubles Team of the Week


MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE ANNOUNCES WOMEN’S TENNIS PLAYER AND DOUBLES TEAM OF THE WEEK
 
MAC Women’s Tennis Singles Player of the Week
Lindsey Zieglar, Western Michigan – Freshman, Daytona Beach, Fla. (Atlantic High School)
Western Michigan freshman Lindsey Zieglar at No. 4 singles won her first collegiate dual singles match, defeating Victoria Kurz from Oakland in a third set tie-break (6-7, 6-1, 7-6) at the No. 4 spot. Her win secured the fourth and decisive point for her team, as the Broncos opened the 2020 season with a 4-3 victory over the Golden Grizzlies on Saturday. 
 
Additional Women’s Singles Nominees:
Miruna Vasilescu, Akron – Junior, Ulm, Germany (Friedrichs)
Akron junior Miruna Vasilescu went 1-1 in singles at No. 1 singles in the Spring opener. Against Army, she battled Ana Joyner to a 6-3, 7-5 defeat. Against Cincinnati, Vasilescu claimed a three-set win over Ioana Guna, 4-6, 7-5, 10-8 (1).
 
Rebecca Herrington, Ball State – Senior, Alliston, Ontario (Banting High School)
Ball State senior Rebecca Herrington at No. 3 singles helped the Cardinals to begin the 2020 season with a 7-0 sweep at IUPUI Friday night in Indianapolis, Ind. Herrington managed to quickly take down her opponents Christina Stankovic in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Herrington also competed at the No. 3 doubles slot alongside teammate Emily Desai. The duo earned a 6-1 victory over the Jaguars.
 
 
MAC Women’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
Gabriela Slavova, Western Michigan – Senior, Sofia, Bulgaria (Vasil Levski)
Lindsey Zieglar, Western Michigan – Freshman, Daytona Beach, Fla. (Atlantic High School)

 
Western Michigan senior Gabriela Slavova and freshman Lindsey Zieglar at No. 3 doubles beat Nirva Patel and Victoria Kurz of Oakland by a 6-4 score on Saturday. Their win helped the Broncos earn the doubles point over the Golden Grizzlies. Western Michigan would go on to defeat Oakland 4-3 to start its 2020 campaign.

Emily Desai, Ball State – Freshman, Greenwood, Ind. (North Central High School)

 
Ball State senior Rebecca Herrington and freshman Emily Desai at No. 3 doubles helped the Cardinals take the early 1-0 advantage over IUPUI Friday night in Ball State’s first spring match of 2020. The duo only dropped one game to the Jaguars Marta Krakowski and Ines Rivera, winning the match by a score of 6-1. The twosome ended up helping the Cardinals to a 7-0 sweep over the Jaguars.
