Western Michigan, Buffalo Claim 2026 MAC Individual Tennis Championship Titles

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – For the very first time, Western Michigan and Buffalo won the MAC Doubles and Singles Individual Tennis Championship, respectively, on Sunday Afternoon at West Hills Athletic Club.

Sophomore Ayana Yaguchi and freshman Julia Hostáková are the first pair from Western Michigan to win the doubles title. The Broncos trailed 4-6 before firing off four straight games to take the title from Miami’s Maria Luisa Oliveira and Allie Faulkner.

Buffalo’s Sarah Hartel eliminated Frida Weijerman (WMU) in two hard-fought sets during the semifinals to meet her teammate Aleksandra Kachushkina in the title match. Kachushkina trailed a set to Priyanka Rana (BSU) but climbed back to win the second and tiebreak sets to clinch the match.

This was Buffalo’s first singles final appearance as individuals and as a team overall. Hartel took down her teammate in straight sets to win her first individual title and first title for the UB program.

Hartel, Kachushkina, Yaguchi, and Hostáková all automatically qualify for the main draw of the 2026 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Conference Masters Tournament on Nov. 5-8 at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Ga.
