Mental Health Care Provider Certification Policy
All treatment for student-athletes must be provided by professionals with relevant and appropriate education, training, certification, and licensure, including but not limited to: mental health, mental performance, nutrition, physical health, illness, and injury.
Mental health treatment and services for student-athletes are provided by a licensed mental health professional in the state in which the university is located. Examples of licensure of mental health providers include Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), Licensed Psychologist, Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW), Licensed Psychiatrist, or each state's equivalent independent licensure. Licensed, unlicensed and trainee mental health providers with a dependent status must have a licensed supervisor. Licensees must be active and in good standing with their state licensing board. Licensed mental health providers hold a master's or doctoral degree in the fields of counseling, social work, or psychology. Services that are provided only by licensed providers include: individual mental health counseling, psychological assessment, group mental health services, and other approaches to mental health treatment and assessment. Mental health education and training should be led, vetted and approved, or completed in collaboration with a licensed mental health provider, as well as the appropriate institutional staff member.
Mental performance intervention, assessment, and services must be performed by or under the supervision of a professional with a master's or doctoral degree in relevant field, including but not limited to sport psychology, counseling, social work, or other clearly related to sports science or psychology degree. In addition to relevant education, providers of mental performance services must be credentialed (or in process of credentialling) through the Association of Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) as a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) or meet APA Division 47 requirements to be specialized in Sport Psychology. Other nationally recognized certifications or credentials may be applicable if they include sport/mental health education, training, and/or supervised experience requirements.
