Toledo Sweeps Purdue Fort Wayne

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's volleyball team picked up its fourth straight win with a 3-0 sweep (25-14, 25-17, 25-21) over Purdue Fort Wayne at Savage Arena on Tuesday night.

The Rockets' (4-0) offense posted a .333 clip in the match, the third contest of the season with a team hitting percentage of .300 or higher.

Senior Ava Siefke led the squad with 12 kills on a career-best .458 hitting percentage. Sophie Catalano poured in nine terminations of her own while Kayla Ozanich and Sierra Pertzborn each tallied seven kills.

Sophomore Jessica Costlow had a team-high 14 digs while Janelle Green posted her first career double-double with 16 assists and 12 digs to go along with two service aces. Maddy Bach chipped in 19 helpers as Grace Freiberger had 10 digs for her fourth-straight contest with double-figure digs.

  • Toledo fired off an early 5-0 run and took an 8-1 lead in the first set behind kills from Sierra Pertzborn and a block from Ava Siefke and Lilly Merk. A kill from Ava Siefke capped off a 6-0 surge from UT to extend the lead, 18-7. Kayla Ozanich tallied her fourth kill of the night to reach set point, 24-14, before Jessica Costlow hammered home a termination to secure the set win.
  • After trading early points in the second, Purdue Fort Wayne took a slight advantage, 10-7. A 6-1 run by the Rockets, highlighted by a big block from Ozanich and Pertzborn and an ace from Costlow, put Toledo back in front, 11-10. Janelle Green tallied an ace and a kill from Costlow extended Toledo's lead to five, 20-15. Maddy Bach's first ace of the night put Toledo ahead by six, 23-17, and a kill from Ozanich gave Toledo the set victory.
  • Kills from Sophie Catalano and Green put UT in front early in the third, 6-1. A kill from Ozanich kept Toledo in front, 12-5, before six quick points by the Mastodons made it a one-point game, 12-11. A termination from Costlow and an ace from Bach kept the Rockets ahead, 21-16. Pertzborn put Toledo at match point with a kill, 24-20, and Siefke secured the match win.
Toledo will host Notre Dame on Saturday, Sept. 5 at Savage Arena. First serve is set for 4 p.m. and fans are encouraged to wear white for a White Out.
